I have two of the Tama Cymbal Mates, and two of the Vater Slick Nuts. I have compared them both, playing soft and hard, quick and slow, crash and splash. The Tama Cymbal Mates beat the Vater for me simply because of the size of the Vaters. The Vaters are too tall for the stand (unless you have ample space where your cymbal rests on the stand) and because of this, are not able to firmly grasp the stand. I did try to put a nylon cymbal sheath over the metal to give the Vaters something more to hold on to, but it only helped a little. The Tamas held on much tighter. They are very different in size and shape... much smaller than the Vaters. This allows the Tamas to actually bite onto the metal and hold your cymbal firmly (or loosely) without falling off. I tried the Vaters first because I saw Mike Portnoy used them (I'm sure his stands are probably tall enough). I have had my Vaters fall off a few times, but have never once had my Tamas fall off. I currently have a 18" HHX crash being held on by a Tama Cymbal Mate as well as my 7" Max Splash, both are very different applications but the cymbal mate is diverse enough to be used for both. Another factor is the price. You can almost buy two Tama Cymbal Mates for the price of one Vater Slick Nut. I still like the Vaters, but with bigger cymbals they tend to fly off. Vaters are best on splash cymbals.

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

Overall, the Cymbal Mate works as advertised. I read in other reviews where other drummers has had problems with these flying off. I have not had that problem but think if you use a shorter cymbal sleeve, the Cymbal Mate would grab more thread and stay on. Even a wing nut will fly off now and then.
Goes on in a second. The easiest and fastest way to secure cymbals. A quick squeeze and it's off or on.
Seems to be sturdy enough, but it is all plastic. I worry, to a small degree, that a good swat with a drumstick could break it but, because of the small profile, odds are against a direct hit on the Cymbal Mate.
For me the Cymbal Mate has great value. I average three one-nighters a week and can appreciate the time they save me in set-up and tear downs.

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

Being in a local band that plays original music and only get's 10 minutes to setup in between acts.....these things save me about 3 minutes of fiddling around and twirling wing-nuts.

So far I've been playing out with them for the past year and they havent broke, chipped, or lost functionality in any way. I'm a hard hitter too, lots of crash cymbal riding. I use a traditional style wing-nut on my ride though, just because of the weight of it and how much it flops around when I hit it. I'm sure these work just as well, but I don't want to take the chance.

The red matches my kit too, an added bonus. Great buy!

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

These are just plain great, especially if you're a player who switches around cymbals often. My single concern is that it may make it easier for a thief to grab your cymbal off the stand quickly, so consider a bit of caution when using them live or in a studio setting or where many people are around.
Also, please note these will not fit on the old-style 6mm threaded posts and can mainly (or only) be used as a substitute for the regular cymbal mates on the newer 8mm stands.

I would recommend this to anyone considering getting a little something to upgrade your kit in a small, but very useful, way. Undoing the wing nuts on cymbals isn't the worst thing in the world but these pieces actually do make tear down a breeze. Looks uniform and professional too.

It's great, if you don't like it, just buy some Vater Slick-Nuts, but I can see these holding up fine in a live setting!
Does it's job great! Absolutely no reason to complain, holds the cymbal in place, does not move around unless you spin it by hand.
Not surprised by it's quality seeing that is made by Tama. Absolutely top-notch.
Fairly cheap, even though it came with my Roadpro stands so I can't say I was ripped-off.

If you have 6mm stands these will pop right off. I'm sure they would be awesome with 8mm stands. They seem like they would pop off pretty easy if your a hard hitter though. Just double check your stand size befor ordering.

I bought one of these and a Vater Slick Nut to compare and the Tama cymbal mate won out for me. Its cheap, strong and I can still pick the felt I want to use with it. The Vater may last longer as its metal and the Tama is some kind of plastic but Ive had no problems with it. Anyone who says it wont stay on the stand isnt using it on an 8mm stand. Great idea Tama!

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

I had bought a Tama MCA63EN Cymbal Attachment for my splash and this came with it instead of the plastic T-nut. I like it. It makes adjusting how loose you want the cymbal pretty easy. I haven't used it in a gig yet, but from just messing around it's pretty sturdy. I just might order a few more of these to kill set-up and tear down times.

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

I ordered 2 4-packs of these to cut down on set up time, which they definitely do. However, they do not withstand strong cymbal hits! 2 of these kept flying off the cymbals while 2 stayed put. It's possible the spring mechanism that activates the clamp that hold on to the threads of your cymbal stand is weak or cheaply made. Not what I was expecting. Would not recommend.

Comments about Tama Quick-Set Cymbal Mate:

As mentioned, these are not for 6mm threaded cymbal shafts which are typically found on lite-weight and economy model stands. Most professional, heavy duty stands have 8mm pipes and this product works great, holds securely and saves time mounting multiple cymbals.

Depending on venue size, I hang a dozen (or more) plates: 2 rides (one 22" K Zildjian for defined ping and bell work and a Sabian HHX Evolution Series Legacy Ozone Dave Weckl signature wash), various crashes, multiple splashes, a Swiss knocker w/rivets, Zil and Alu bells, a Chad Smith Holy China and several Wuhan China boys and Spiral Stackers.

The Quick-Set Cymbal Mates work excellent on everything except the conical cones of the inverted Wuhans. (I cracked several Wuhans decades ago using wingnuts, but I now mount them using inverted Hi Hat clutches that slip over the posts to avoid wing nuts dinging the inside of the top hat shaped "bells" and I haven't damaged one since.) You'll like the Quick Set Mates and if you have a tech he/she will love them and order spares!

Hey, these work fine on both 6mm and 8mm stems. I'm still partial to the Vater slicknut because it's bigger and it includes a top felt. But the Vater definitely does not fit a 6mm stem and it cost more (about double). The TAMA brand is smaller than expected, they're cheap in the 4 pack and they work just fine. Only time will tell how they hold up. TAMA has more plastic in them than the Vater which may affect durability. The TAMA would probably break if you stepped on it on a hard surface floor whereas the Vaters *might* survive. This is total speculation. I haven't tested this. Anyway, they both get the job done and I'm quite happy to not be threading nuts on my cymbal stands anymore.
