OVERVIEW

A skill-building workshop for bassists!

Easy to Learn and Use

If you can operate a CD player, you can use the TASCAM CD-BT1mkII Portable CD Bass Trainer. Take any standard compact disc by your favorite band and put it in the CD mechanism. Then plug your bass directly into the CD-BT1mkII's 1/4" input. Put on some headphones, set the volume, and start rocking! If you're a vocalist, you can do the same, substituting your microphone for the guitar.

Slow Down and Learn with Slow Speed Audition feature

In ancient times (like the 1970s), musicians would take a vinyl LP record and manually spin the record on a turntable, slowing it down to be able to better hear and understand the performances, like bass solos and complex chord changes. With the CD-BT1mkII, you get a training method that's even better. Not only can you slow down the speed of the CD by up to 50%, but you can also do it without changing the pitch of the original material! After you learn the lick at a slow speed, you can increase the tempo in steps until you can match the original performance note for note. Also, you can change the pitch of the CD without changing the speed . . . use this feature to "tune the CD" to your instrument.

Effect Yourself

The CD-BT1mkII has 16 great-sounding built-in customizable bass effects . . . you don't need to turn to external boxes for chorus, EQ, and more. The Bass Boost and Enhance settings allow you to boost the bass part so that you can hear it better, and Bass Cut lets you mute the original so you can play along.

Performance Tools

You can set seamless in-out loop points with the CD-BT1mkII . . . it will play the same section of music over and over again so you can focus on your playing. Use the footswitch input to start and stop the CD or to scroll through effects. The CD-BT1mkII even provides a chromatic tuner so you always sound great when you play, and it can run on batteries to take your show on the road. You can listen to the CD-BT1mkII via headphones or use its Line Output to plug in speakers.

The slow down feature on the BT is great. The unit starts to vibrato as the song gets slower while keeping the same pitch. If you slow it down too much the notes will become very difficult to distinguish. CD to Bass ratio can be fixed in a matter of seconds. I play with a passive bass and can make my bass louder then the music or vice versa.Bass enhancement is a disaster. It distorts the bass line so much you can?t tell an A from a G. The bass cut feature works surprisingly well, allowing you to become the bass player. Bass boost or whatever it?s called works for 80% of situations when the CD just lacks umph in the bassline. The EQ option is nice. After 10 min of messing around with the settings, tweaking my amp and bass I figured out how to get a really ?warm? sound. The effects are decent once tweaked a bit. Keep in mind this unit is made to break down music passages and not as an effect box.The construction of the unit is average. It would have been nice for them to use a thicker higher quality plastic. The latch, which secures the lid to the CD player, is way too flimsy. I can just imagine closing it a little too hard and snap. Overall. This is a good buy. With a few modifications it will become a must have item.

I would like to start by saying I've purchased other Tascam products and have been very happy with them. This unit misses the mark .I bought this machine today and I couldn't be more DISPLEASED with the instructions included with the machine. I'm wondering if the unit I bought is defective or if I'm just missing something. I followed the set-up instuctions step by step and this thing sounds TERRIBLE at any speed. This thing couldn't be any more difficult to use. My advice to anyone pondering getting this unit, try it out first. This unit is flimsy and fragile. The "feature" rating I give is based on what they say it CAN do.Mine is going back or in the trash can.

Jury is still out.

By Kiley

I have used my Bass Trainer to learn a few songs. So far so good. Man does it eat batteries. It seems to be a little picky. If there arne't new batteries it won't always play the selected track. I'm ordering the power supply, hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Great Tool!

By Thor29302

from South Carolina

The Tascam Bass Trainer is a great tool for learning new songs. You can adjust the amount of bass you hear on the original CD. You can adjust the amount of your own bass you hear in the mix.One of the features I like is the ability to change the key for a song. For example, my band was learning a song that is played on the original CD in the key of G. We wanted to play it in E. No problem, just adjusted it and learned my part in my key. The sound does degrade some as you move further away from the original key, but not enough to warrant a serious complaint from me.Another great feature is the ability set a loop so that the CD replays any segment that you select over and over - Great for picking apart a specific chop.I highly recommend this gadget for anyone that is serious about learning bass licks from your favorite bass players.

Great machine expensive to use!

By Mulebagger

from Des Moines, IA

This is a fantastic unit for someone in need of figuring out bass lines. It would be particularly useful for someone in a cover band or a beginning bassist. My only gripe is that is eats batteries by the fistfull. BUY THE POWER SUPPLY! The optional speaker case has good sound and a smart option to protect your trainer.

Best gift you could give

By Spence-oZart

from Eupora, MS

I received my unit as a gift and have been doing my best to try and wear it out. The output to the headphones is a little weak, a GOOD set of headphones will fix that though. The manual could use a little more detail as well. I'm very pleased with what the unit does and will buy another if I ever break or wear it out.

Happy User

I've had mine for over a year and use it every week. I have had nothing but good experience with it. The effects are kinda quirky but for learning bass lines this is the best tools around.

All that and a bag of chips

By Crystal Champagne

from Honolulu, HI

I have had a chance to play with some of the features, and I am extremely impressed with what I've seen. It's absolutely amazing. It takes a little while to figure out the settings as it has so very many tools....but once you get going, there's no stopping. I couldn't put it down out of sheer excitement. So many new songs to conquer, but not a problem with my new bass trainer. ROCK ON!!!

A new dimension

By Lonegroover

Spent 1st three years as a bassist learning my parts in traditional hit & miss manner from listening to CDs/reading tabs. This piece if kit is already making me a so much better player - letting me hear PRECISELY what each bassist is playing on every track and enabling me (through slowing down the track and practising along at increasing speeds)to copy them note for note. Perfect

Tascam Bass Trainer

The little tabs on the lid broke the same day I purchased it. I find the manual a bit hard to understand. Changing the key is great. Slowing the music down I'm not really pleased with that. Never-the-less it is a great practice tool. I'm sure once I figure out how to use the functions correctly, it'll be an asset.
