I've been teaching guitar lessons professionally for over 25 years to more than 400 students. I think this is such an essential tool, I most of the time recommend it to the parents to buy rather than a first amp. It is cheaper than an amp, yet it is able to recreate most any sounds you can hear on every recording. The CD function allows the students to play along the music, and the loop function allows them to single out select passages and really practice them. The 1/2 speed function is something I wish I had had when I was starting out as a kid (it's infinitely easier than slowing down a record turntable with your thumb :-). It's easy to use, and doesn't require a whole computer setup to be started up if you want to start a quick practice session with a recording. All in all: I love it. In the last fifteen years I went through about three of them (yes I also always pack one when I'm touring), and I guess I'll keep buying them in the future.
Essential practice features. Loop play, slow down, guitar headphone amp with distortion and (a lot of) effects.
Sometimes flimsily made. I go through one about every five years.
The power supply is very expensive and NOT INCLUDED! It is essential, however, because this machine will burn through a set of batteries in about 3 hours.

Comments about TASCAM CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:
The second unit I received works fine. I was extremely dissapointed with Musician's Friend for sending me a defective unit to start with. It was clearly a used unit because the former receipent had made a hand written note on the front of the owner's manual. This was a clear indication that it was a returned unit and should not have been shipped out again as a new one.
The second unit I received is doing what I purchased it for.

I've playing for about 40 yrs now, I bought the Tascam GT2 to help keep my skills sharp. Spent about 150 bucks on it, hoping that it would last a couple of yrs, didn't last 3 months. I used it everyday for about 3 hrs a day, plugged it in the other day and it crapped out, wouldn't even power up. Called it everything under the sun. Taking it back for a refund.

First one didnt work at all.Second one, 1/4in. jacks came loose and shorted after a short time. Also sounds like a great deal 99 bucks until you have to spend another $26.00 for a power supply.Batteries last less then 2 hours.I exchanged it for store credit

How I use this unit: After attending the Jamey Aebersold summer jazz camp (2010), I got this unit for the purpose of helping me play faster tempos in straight-ahead jazz. Basically, (1) putting in either an Aebersold play-a-long, or CD/transcription (Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, etc., etc.), (2) mastering at slow speed, and then incrementally increasing tempo (same way you'd use a metronome) to speeds faster than I was capable of playing before. Works great.
Comments about TASCAM CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:
MY wife bought the TASCAM CD-GT2 from this site for me as a gift based upon my best friend's 40 years of guitar experience recommendation. As a first year guitar player, it had become my main tool to learn new cover songs, slowly ramp up play-a-longs, and learn rhythms. Now in my second year of playing, I use it daily! I have improved dramatically faster than I thought possible because of this product. The instructions are very well complete with respect to the myriad of features. I have not tried any of the effects yet. I've noticed that if you download music from iTunes onto a CD, the pitch will not stay true when significantly slowing down the tempo (although, it might have to do with the '57 -'64 genre recordings that I'm focused on). The 3.0 on quality is based upon two issues: First, it appears to be very fragile and I feel that you have to treat it like a baby. Second, I recently purchased a foot switch for "flash" rewind to catch a phrase without taking my hands off the guitar (which is an awesome feature and BTW, you can switch polarity for the switch internally), but when I tried to program the foot switch to rewind back to the beginning of the track, the CD just sits there and skips. I hope that this is how it worked new and not a sign of the unit starting to fail. I recommend that you hook up a foot switch at day of purchase to check this one feature, otherwise, this is a lifetime tool if it lives that long.

This was like a car with great accessories that won't start. The head phone in jack was squirrely-it would lose half the signal. The guitar in jack didn't work at all. The guitar in is kind of the whole point to this thing. I'm glad I bought the Korg D3200 instead of the Tascam 2488, if the quality of the CD GTR was any indication of Tascam's lack of quality. Maybe it's time to in-source this product, or hire some QC folks. This is going back.
Comments about TASCAM CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:
I've had a CD-GTI and earlier model of the CD-GT2 which just failed last week. The features can be very useful for learning parts and songs and even checking out pedals but each of them suddenly failed to play CDs for no apparent reason. They both got used frequently but sat in one dedicated spot in my practice room. Never moved. Never taken anywhere. I'm not a kid. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years. I used them to practice one night and the next night the CD skipped constantly, changed speeds or wouldn't play at all. Expect them to last about a year or so. If I buy another one I'll definitely buy the extended warranty.
