I've been teaching guitar lessons professionally for over 25 years to more than 400 students. I think this is such an essential tool, I most of the time recommend it to the parents to buy rather than a first amp. It is cheaper than an amp, yet it is able to recreate most any sounds you can hear on every recording. The CD function allows the students to play along the music, and the loop function allows them to single out select passages and really practice them. The 1/2 speed function is something I wish I had had when I was starting out as a kid (it's infinitely easier than slowing down a record turntable with your thumb :-). It's easy to use, and doesn't require a whole computer setup to be started up if you want to start a quick practice session with a recording. All in all: I love it. In the last fifteen years I went through about three of them (yes I also always pack one when I'm touring), and I guess I'll keep buying them in the future.
Essential practice features. Loop play, slow down, guitar headphone amp with distortion and (a lot of) effects.
Sometimes flimsily made. I go through one about every five years.
The power supply is very expensive and NOT INCLUDED! It is essential, however, because this machine will burn through a set of batteries in about 3 hours.

I've playing for about 40 yrs now, I bought the Tascam GT2 to help keep my skills sharp. Spent about 150 bucks on it, hoping that it would last a couple of yrs, didn't last 3 months. I used it everyday for about 3 hrs a day, plugged it in the other day and it crapped out, wouldn't even power up. Called it everything under the sun. Taking it back for a refund.

Modern Magic

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

How I use this unit: After attending the Jamey Aebersold summer jazz camp (2010), I got this unit for the purpose of helping me play faster tempos in straight-ahead jazz. Basically, (1) putting in either an Aebersold play-a-long, or CD/transcription (Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, etc., etc.), (2) mastering at slow speed, and then incrementally increasing tempo (same way you'd use a metronome) to speeds faster than I was capable of playing before. Works great.

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

MY wife bought the TASCAM CD-GT2 from this site for me as a gift based upon my best friend's 40 years of guitar experience recommendation. As a first year guitar player, it had become my main tool to learn new cover songs, slowly ramp up play-a-longs, and learn rhythms. Now in my second year of playing, I use it daily! I have improved dramatically faster than I thought possible because of this product. The instructions are very well complete with respect to the myriad of features. I have not tried any of the effects yet. I've noticed that if you download music from iTunes onto a CD, the pitch will not stay true when significantly slowing down the tempo (although, it might have to do with the '57 -'64 genre recordings that I'm focused on). The 3.0 on quality is based upon two issues: First, it appears to be very fragile and I feel that you have to treat it like a baby. Second, I recently purchased a foot switch for "flash" rewind to catch a phrase without taking my hands off the guitar (which is an awesome feature and BTW, you can switch polarity for the switch internally), but when I tried to program the foot switch to rewind back to the beginning of the track, the CD just sits there and skips. I hope that this is how it worked new and not a sign of the unit starting to fail. I recommend that you hook up a foot switch at day of purchase to check this one feature, otherwise, this is a lifetime tool if it lives that long.

Disappointed with Musician's Friend

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

The second unit I received works fine. I was extremely dissapointed with Musician's Friend for sending me a defective unit to start with. It was clearly a used unit because the former receipent had made a hand written note on the front of the owner's manual. This was a clear indication that it was a returned unit and should not have been shipped out again as a new one.
The second unit I received is doing what I purchased it for.

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

This machine is a must for those who want to learn those complex guitar parts, jam along with C.D. and to analize every nuance of their guitar hero. Heck , you can slow down Yngwie or DiMeola to a crawl and not have to figure it twice. When slow it down past 35%, the sound will warble, but you can still distiguish the guitar parts. The efx are okay but I had to add a old Hot Watt to give the distortion more punch. The tuner works fine and does the job. When you get this unit and use it well, your musicianship will grow from learning from the masters !!!!

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

Being an old timer I did not get the GT2 to figure out guitar runs instead I used it for learning Accordion leads (said I was an old timer). Doesn't matter what instrument lead you are trying to figure out this little squirt does the job. Very impressed with slowing the tempo down and still maintaing the correct pitch. Followed along a song by playing the bass/chord buttons on the left hand of the Accordion and it was in perfect pitch at a slower speed. The Loop In/Out and Flashback are just what the Doctor ordered to learn passages. Buy it; you won't be sorry.

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

Overall, a good product. Was looking for a guitar trainer to replace one I have had for a few years. I like that the cd player is included with this trainer, but it does not have an input jack to use with other devices as well. The tempo function works pretty good, slows down to 50%, and keeps the song intact. The guitar cancel is a good feature, it can help isolate specific parts depending on how the music is recorded on the cd-sometimes the vocals can be almost completely eliminated. The loop feature is good for working on solos, and it does not have a time limit. Guitar effects are ok-but not great. You get about 10 presets and can only adjust based on what is already set in. Some effects require multiple effects together to get one specific effect sound. Tuner is ok also, but I don't think it is highly sensitive to pitch, I check with another tuner as well. Overall, the CT-GT2 has a lot of features, and they all do work well. Easy to use and very convenient. Also purchased the adapter that goes with it, and it works well also.

I am very impressed with this trainer! It does everything it's suppose to do, and it is very easy to use. I plugged in, thinking I would just try it out for a few minutes, but ended up playing for 3 hours! It's really fun! I dug out some CDs and heard some things I've never heard before. No doubt this will help my playing! (if only I had one of these back in the 80s!)

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

I've had a CD-GTI and earlier model of the CD-GT2 which just failed last week. The features can be very useful for learning parts and songs and even checking out pedals but each of them suddenly failed to play CDs for no apparent reason. They both got used frequently but sat in one dedicated spot in my practice room. Never moved. Never taken anywhere. I'm not a kid. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years. I used them to practice one night and the next night the CD skipped constantly, changed speeds or wouldn't play at all. Expect them to last about a year or so. If I buy another one I'll definitely buy the extended warranty.

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

I bought this thing for the sole purpose of slowing down solos. I don't sing or play guitar through it.. so I don't know about those functions. I have it plugged into my stereo, & play along thru my guitar amp. It slows songs down nicely... yes some guys say it gets 'blury' when too slow, but thats the background music. The solos stay just fine. There are 2 main factors in this feature to keep in mind, and have nothing to do with the unit itself : 1.) Fast solos will still be difficult to read even at the slowest speed. I mean - if you have a jet plane & a car, & slow them both down 40%, the jet is still going fast, get it ? And #2 -- the recording of the CD itself in regarding the 'guitar cancel' feature. If the CD solo is recorded all by itself in the L or R speaker, great. But if theres bass, rhythm guitar, drums, vocals, etc... all mixed in, it does not cancell out all that noise. I mean, its a good machine, just not a dream come true. It seems a bit fragile & lightweight, not too sturdy. The loop feature is great... but you can't loop more than 1 track... like if you set a loop for track 2 & then go set one for track 5, when you go back to track 2, & hit LOOP, it brings you back to track 5. So the last loop you save cancells out the first. No big deal but that would have been better to save multiple loops. So its a pretty good thing to have. I like it.... but I'd feel better if it was cheaper.

Comments about Tascam CD-GT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer:

I read many reviews of the GT-1 before making this purcahse and was therefore expecting that this would be hard to use and cheaply constructed. It got here in two days and I was very happy to find that I was able to begin using it right out of the box. I read the instructions quickly and found them very informative. I have not had to refer to them since, as the machine is easy to use. The only thing that it does not do very well is slow the music down. It takes on a "warbly" effect when you slow it down very much. I must note that I have not even tried the effects because that is not why I purchased it. I wanted to primarily use the loop feature and some of the other stuff to a lesser extent. It is also great for playing with the phones on so you don't bother others. Currently they don't carry the power adaptor and this thing uses some batteries. I would buy it again and am satisfied with the purchase. It does what I wanted it to do.

This was like a car with great accessories that won't start. The head phone in jack was squirrely-it would lose half the signal. The guitar in jack didn't work at all. The guitar in is kind of the whole point to this thing. I'm glad I bought the Korg D3200 instead of the Tascam 2488, if the quality of the CD GTR was any indication of Tascam's lack of quality. Maybe it's time to in-source this product, or hire some QC folks. This is going back.

I have been playing guitar for 45 years, and am actively gigging. I need to learn all guitar parts on several new songs quickly. This is my essential tool for learning songs and practice. I'm old school, so I prefer this version, to play along with the CD, rather than I pod technology. I plug in my guitar and I'm part of the band, playing next to Page, Clapton or Hendrix. When I need help with their solos, I loop that section and play it over and over, until my fingers play it naturally. Occasionally, I have to slow tempo down, if I can't get it at regular speed. Also, having the ability to adjust the key either in a half step, or in fractions to match a song that was recorded out of key, is really helpful. This is such an essential tool, I have purchased three, one for two areas where I practice and a backup. I will use this for as long as CDs are available to burn.

Buying a used/return item risky -but not much - given you have a return window. Someone had pushed very hard on the disc holder/spindle, sliding it down on the motor shaft until it was binding on the housing. So this unit did not work at all on arrival. But I've been repairing everything electronic and mechanical for about 55 years so had this sorted in short order. This is like new condition now and I love it.
