This is a great tool for learning guitar parts or just practicing songs. Everything works as advertised. Loading and editing files via computer is fast and easy. The playback speed, key / pitch fine tune, looping, etc. all work well and are similar to the Tascam CD trainers. The menus and user interface are very easy to use.
A few negatives:
- The built-in amp sounds aren't that good. They sound very similar to previous Tascam models. I was hoping they had improved this by now. If you are used to POD or similar direct sounds, you will be disappointed with this. It also takes a few button pushes to select saved sounds, which is less convenient than the CD trainers.
- The amp/effects section is very noisy. There is a lot of hiss and it's worse than previous Tascam models. It sounds much better to run a POD or something similar into this unit and bypass the internal effects.
- I miss the "CD Effects" from previous models. The center "voice cancel" feature was very useful for isolating instrument parts.
- Some mp3 files don't show the file name or song title when playing them. The file name is visible when browsing folders though.
Overall, this is a great practice tool and I would recommend it. It saves a lot of time not having to burn CD's.

Pretty worthless for bass
Had the previous model MP-BT1 (now discontinued) which, despite its imperfections, was better than this. If you're a bass player, skip this product - I ended up returning mine.

Had the previous model MP-BT1 (now discontinued) which, despite its imperfections, was better than this. If you're a bass player, skip this product - I ended up returning mine.
Had used the previous one to learn songs, changing to the key we'd be playing them in, listening to them slowed down so I could figure out the bass part, then looping sections to practice. Unfortunately, you can't hear the bass with this one! And now there are apps (like JamUp) that will do the key changing, slowing and looping I need.
So Tascam replaced an ok product with a poor one (for bass players). On top of that, after I ordered it last Fall, it kept being put on back order, so I didn't wind up getting it until three months after I'd ordered it. Good thing I could return it.

Hard to get started without really reading the manuel. Also I don't like the fact that it does not have backlighting on it is my only gripe
Has good tone and once you get started has all the features you would wangt in a compact size. I owned the BT-1 and only sold it because it did not play WAV files and would still have it otherwise.

I spent 3 hours with the manual and couldn't manage to playback a single mp3 which which took less than a minute to drag and drop into the SD card of the unit.

I've played by ear since I was a teenager so I've always liked tools like this. The tone is better than 7 years ago. It's more solid state and less cheesy modeling. It's easier to find sounds. You have one amp. Almost as easy as turning knobs. I use a clean sound with a little delay, for reverb. I run my pedal board in front of it. It's great.

This is a very nice tool for practice! Super value or the price. It has a lot of useful features, and the sound is quite impressive.
Its small size makes it very handy to take on the road to let you practice during business trips. I has has multiple power options such as batteries, USB, or an optional power supply.
I only have a few things that I would like to see improved:
1. The display is very low resolution and has poor contrast. Higher resolution and a backlight would make it much more usable.
2. The plug for the footswitch is a very non-standard size (2.5mm).
3The factory footswitch and power supply are EXTREMELY overpriced.

When I play cover tunes I like to play it exactly like the original. I know they came to hear the songs they like, not my version of them. With this device you can adjust the key and learn it right the first time. If you learn it wrong, it is hard to unlearn, so no matter what instrument you play including horns, this device will make you a better player.

Works great after you get it working. Instructions are very poorly worded and incomplete. If you're willing to take the time to get it set up properly, it will work fine. Once you get it set up it's easy to use.

While this unit does deliver, the instruction manual is challenging to a 50 something, somewhat technological savvy guitar player. More step by step instructions would have been nice. Still, great value for the money and if you have the time to sit down and figure it out...go for it, it is worth it!

I love this! This is the first guitar trainer I've owned and it works great. The ability to loop sections and slow them down has been very helpful in learning parts of songs that have been difficult. The key change function is cool, although as others have mentioned the sound quality drops quite a bit at very slow speeds.
Learning to use this has been very intuitive. I looked up a couple of things in the manual, but I've been able to do most everything by just looking at the button labels.
Adding songs to the unit has been very easy. It only recognizes MP3s but there are tons of free software programs available that convert Itunes and Windows Media Player files to MP3.
I haven't played too much with the effects settings but the default one sounds pretty good for practicing.
Overall, I highly recommend this.

The one thing that is most necessary on a bass trainer is the ability to remove (actually reduce) the bass track on the music being practiced. I can't believe that this unit does not do that. Amazing! Without that feature this unit is completely useless to me. All other bass trainers made by Tascam had this feature. Even the old trainer that used CDs rather than digital files cound do this. What were they thinking!
