Comments about Thomastik JF345 Flatwound 5-String Jazz Bass Strings:

Look anywhere online and you'll hear high praise for these strings. They are widely regarded as some of the best sounding strings available. Several prominent professional studio bassists use these strings (if that says anything). Lots of people complain about about the priced, but before you do, ask yourself "If you made what might be THE BEST bass strings on the planet, what would YOU charge for them?" Considering the quality and consistency, I think the price is reasonable. These are PROFESSIONAL level strings--not your cheap, beginning student, round wounds!
I play these on a Tobias with a MM style pick up at the bridge. When I first put these strings on, I was surprised to find that I DIDN'T lose the snarling growl from my tone. I worried a bit that these flatwounds MIGHT kill my tone--FAR FROM IT! These sound WAY BETTER than the (way too bright) roundwounds I'd had on there. These strings removed all the aweful ringing "zing" that the roundwounds had and brought power! Now the bass will growl and punch you in the face! These strings are not stiff like Chromes (which I have on another bass). Coming from a stiff set like Chromes, these strings feel soft and buttery almost like rubber bands. You can play for hours without hand fatigue! They sound AWESOME and feel like rubber bands! I HIGHLY recommend these strings for the serious musician.

Great strings, a bit expensive

By John Lloyd

from Maine

Comments about Thomastik JF345 Flatwound 5-String Jazz Bass Strings:

The sound is what I like. I listened to a lot of strings played on youtube to make my choice and I am not disapointed. If you are on a budget though there are flatwound strings at less than half the price that are very good sounding strings.
These strings sound and play geat on my new Gecko 5 string fretless. The sound is a bit brighter than Fender SS flatwounds on my other bass and have a lot bigger sound with more presence. The feel is not as slick as some other flat wounds I have played but still very smooth - way better than round would strings.
I used these on a 35" scale bass because the extra long strings (JF365) were too long and would have wound on past the silk wrapping - a bad thing I am told. The 9 is because the low "B" string was right on the edge of being too short - some of the silk wrapping is touching the nut. All of the others fit great. Everything else is first class about these strings.
My biggest complaint - the price. Considering how long bass strings last though it is worth it to get a better sound. It just hurts for a little while.

Fantastic strings but oh so pricey

Comments about Thomastik JF345 Flatwound 5-String Jazz Bass Strings:

Best electric bass strings that I have ever had the fortune of using.
Plenty of lead on the ends of the strings going into the headstalk. Superb flexibility without being too floppy and buzzy. Definitely get all the good parts of a round wound sound and all smoothness of a flatwound.

Very smooth and allow my fingertips to "slip" off of them which really helps with speedy passage work. Also, they have the zing of roundwound without the obtrusive noise that comes with them. Slightly stiffer in a sense too in that they don't have as much movement when plucked (this is a very good thing!).
I didn't need to do any adjusting on my base (Ibanez sound gear 755) other than raising the action slightly on the D string (was getting a bit of buzz on frets 2-4). Intonation did not have to be adjusted after using elixir light gauge strings.

These strings if wiped down regularly definitely last a good amount of time and thankfully so at such a steep price. Excellent tonal properties. Get the thuddiest to the most punchy tone out of these. They really can claim some extreme versatility. Spectral balance is just amazing.
The biggest problem with these strings is the price. We need someone in the US to directly compete with the quality and functionality of these and to provide us a less expensive alternative.

The best flatwound strings on the planet

By UncleDon

from Marin county

Comments about Thomastik JF345 Flatwound 5-String Jazz Bass Strings:

These are the best flatwound strings I have ever used or heard. THey make my bass sound and feel better all up and down the neck. I play better. I have not heard any other unprocessed flatwound strings sound as good as these.
This is the third set of Tomastik flat wounds I have bought and I will keep using them for life. I use them on my fretless. Before, with other flat wounds, I thought I had a fairly limited sweet spot on the neck. These strings have made playing anywhere on the neck rewarding. These strings have character. The tone, the feel, and durability are terrific. If you play fretless, you owe it to yourself to try these.
Keep them clean and they sound terrific far longer than other brands.
These strings are worth the price. But I am glad the price at Musician's Friend is so much better.

Without Question the Best I Have Used

By Bassinator

from Texas

Comments about Thomastik JF345 Flatwound 5-String Jazz Bass Strings:

Outstanding tone and perfect clarity. Can still get the harmonics of round wounds easily. Easy to play, fretting the note is effortless. Did I mention tone? The best I have heard. Well worth the price.
