Simple installation, impressive tone. No soldering required for this circuit board.

The ToneShaper Stratocaster SSS-1 is a circuit board prewired for Fender Stratocaster electric guitars. The circuit board features 2 potentiometers and a 5-way switch in a single unit, that is installed in a regular Strat-style pickguard. You can use any pickups of your choice—attach a jack and you've got a complete Strat-style control assembly. ToneShaper SSS-1 is easy to install and gives you flexibility that you can't get with conventional pots or switches. For installation, simply depress the plunger, put the wire in, and release the plunger. You don't need to solder anything.

A series of switches makes the controls do different things. Normally on a Stratocaster, you would have a volume control, a tone control for the neck and a control for the middle. People sometimes want variations in controlling the bridge, middle, and neck pickups individually. With the ToneShaper Stratocaster SSS-1, you can assign the tone controls to whatever pickups you want.

The ToneShaper SSS-1 also selects different capacitor values for each tone control. ToneShaper included 5 polypropylene capacitors, designed by Panasonic, for each tone control. Select these switches to determine which capacitor you want activated for each control. For instance, you could have a vintage point 1 capacitor value selected for the neck and an entirely different value selected for the other pickups. Much like amplifiers or pedals, ToneShaper includes a diagram of the control plate with graphics on how to quickly adjust the neck tone and middle tone, and augment your sound on the fly.

Some people don't want 2-tone controls, so a popular option is to use the dials as a master volume, master tone, and a blender control. If you've got your 5-way switch in the bridge position, you can use the control knobs to add in the neck pickup. This setup has been practiced for years using a mini toggle switch. The downside from this practice is that it would usually mean you are switching the pickup in or out. The features this and other options in one comprehensive unit that rests under your pickguard. With the blender control you can add a little or a lot of the pickup, or even full on. In the 2 position, the blender control adds in the neck and you can have all 3 pickups going.

With a few flips of the switch, the board becomes a series parallel control. Series configuration yields a thicker, warmer, more humbucker tone. Finally, a quick flip of the knob can return the instrument to the natural Stratocaster neck single-coil tone. The unit also includes a removable volume kit—a resister and capacitor wired in parallel across the volume control—so that as you roll off the volume, you don't experience reduction in treble.

As one of the world's premier builders of complete, prewired assemblies for the guitar aftermarket, ToneShaper has done thousands of Stratocaster prewired assemblies, and had the opportunity to learn what people really want in a Strat. The SSS-1 unit features everything ToneShaper has offered in its standard prewired assemblies and then some, adding some additional functions and features that have never been offered before.

I got the Toneshaper S-S-S because either the volume pot or the 5-way, blade switch in my MIM Strat was cutting out. I used the failure as an excuse to remake a guitar that played well, but sounded thin. I saw the ToneShaper product on the MF website and was intrigued. Not only woud it replace the volume, tone pots, switch, and jack in one fell swoop, but it also provides virtually any wiring and capacitor value option. Too good to be true? IT'S TRUE; IT's TRUE!!I'm a huge fan! The tone knobs now have a linear effect from end-to-end -- I didn't know that was an option on a Fender! In concert with replacing the stock pickups with a set of Fender Hot Noiseless pickups, it's a brand new guitar! Want a tone control for the bridge pickup? Flip a switch or two! Want to blend the neck and the bridge pickup? Flip a switch! Want to raise the tone capacitor value on the bridge pickup to .01uf? Flip a switch. I will perform this on every Stratocaster I own. This is a fine product. I recommend it without hesitaton.

The one feature that instanly provides twice as many tone options with single coil sized humbuckers, coil cutting, is not available providing both single and humbucking sounds.

Because of that, I have quit using this product. My strat has 5 blade positions of single coil and humbucker sounds. I used a push pull pot to turn on the bridge pickup no matter the switch settings providing me with all three and bridge and neck on. I like the bridge and neck on the best. Now my strat has 14 different tone options using a master volume with push pull for coil cut and a master tone with push pull providing the bridge pickup whenever needed. My capacitor is a .047 and provides the largest usable range of trebal cut to no trebal cut at all. I have one pot space left and am deciding, series, phasing, a mid boost circuit?

Using this product will negate the use of any active circuitry you may want to use in the future like a Fender TBX / Mid Boost, or an EMG after burner, there would be no room to instal such a product to be used with the tone shaper.

When I first started down that road of there are many like it but this one is mine and really choosing how my strat sounds, this was a wonderful product. I have just outgrown it. If it provided coil cut options and a way to choose how each pot was to be used, I might come back.
This is a good product for people with no soldering skills who want to dabble with tone modification.

This product is 3 pots soldered to an integrated circuit board. The IC providesl variable tone capacitors and allows the user to choose between series wiring for positions 2 and 4 or blending options for the bridge pickup allowing all 3 to be on or bridge and neck to be on. This product works with single coil or single coil sized humbucking pickups, like the many that Seymour Duncan provides. I used this in a strat that had a neck hot rails, middle George Lynch screaming demon, bridge JB.

This product will reduce your strat to a master tone and volume pot with one pot reserved for turning off/on series or blending in the bridge pickup depending on the options you select by dip switches.
The quality of this product is good and works exactly as advertised.
This is a good product for people with zero soldering skills or guitar electronics knowledge.

The ability to use different capacitors on the fly is market hype. All caps sound the same at 10. I usually use a .033 or a .047 for the broadest range of tonal options. A .047 cap will overlap the ranges of trebal cut provided by .01 through a .03 caps. I don't think I would route the back of my guitar just to dial in a different cap. Go play a guitar with a Varitone circuit, on 10, all positions sound the same, when cutting trebal they all overlap.

The next 2 features provide series wiring or the ability to use the bridge pickup with the neck or all 3 at once. Both are useful features and you could have both at the same time if you learn how to solder.

Comments about ToneShaper Stratocaster SSS-1 Control Knobs and Switch:

Great kit! Easy to install and run. Many variables available. However, to change caps, pot switching, etc., one must remove the pick guard, OR, route out an opening thru the rear. Youtube has good clips on this.

It adds tremendous flexibility in tone settings by changing pot cap values, volume mode, billy mode, etc... This is done using the pick up switching, varying pot cap values, etc. There is no equalization, compression, etc... Only the signals straight outta da pick ups, in different configurations.

        Highly recommended.

I wanted to upgrade my backup stock guitar with new pickups so I thought I'd upgrade the pots too. It took all of 15 minutes. Set it up with a blender pot and it is awesome. Solder less made it easy. Highly recommend for the amateur with no solder skills and the pro for the simple fact is you can change the configuration whenever you get board of the current pickup config or blend

Comments about ToneShaper Stratocaster SSS-1 Control Knobs and Switch:

So I installed single coil sized humbuckers, and when combining the ground and bare wires, they were a little tight going into the plunger for connection. Just make sure you have all wires twisted tightly together. Also, you will have to cut your pickup wires to almost the exact amount of wire you need because there is almost no room to leave any bunched up wire due to the circuit board. So if you have any experience in wiring at all this will be a breeze no problem, if you have none, it is still very easy to use! Just be careful when inserting the wires, as the connection can be a little tricky, make sure you have the connection solid. I am using the blender wiring now, and the setup is great! one negative about using this with a strat with a pickguard, if you want to change the wiring you are using, you have to waste a complete set of strings, so if you can, route a whole in the back and use that, it will be worth it!

              This is IT!!!

I am beyond pleased with this product. The guys at Acme have there <stuff> together: top line hardware (pots, wire, board). The added bonus is that the accompanying setting/install guide is one of the most inuitive and pretty funny manuals I've read.

This is truly an innovative product where the sky is the limit in terms of options.
Top quality pots, board and wire
              Over the top ROI.

Comments about ToneShaper Stratocaster SSS-1 Control Knobs and Switch:

Just got this a couple days ago, read all the destruction's several times, and looked up as much as I could find out about the installation. I did route the body cavity for the ease of making adjustments on the fly. That is optional but it means taking off your strings and pickguard to make adjustments. If ya keep it on one setting this may not be necessary. I however love to tinker. Gear, USA Fender 60th ann. Highway 101. Fender Hot Noiseless pups in the Neck and Middle positions. S.D. Hot Rail in the Bridge position. I use a Vox AC30 and an array of stomp boxes split into to chains into different channels on the Vox. Gotta love the ability of the Vox to play one or both channels. I play clean on the Top Boost Channel and dirty (via stomp boxes) on the normal channel. With my ABY box I can play A or B chains, or both, and both is super cool. Gotta love four inputs huh, nuff said. So I did a initial sound check with the Strat on both the volume and tone controls and left the amp on its same settings. Right away the sound was louder but clearer at the same time. I set it to Standered Fender set up to get a base line sound to start with. WOW!! The tone knobs work now the whole way around and just not 6 to 10. I turned on the volume pack as well and that made a huge difference as well. Normally when you turn the volume down you lose treble as well. Your sound just goes flat. The volume pack only turns the guitar down. Nice! I also made the tone pots for the Neck and the Bridge pup. Fender makes it to where the tone knobs work on the Neck and Middle pup. This was a very nice adjustment in and of its own. Huge difference. I briefly played around with the Blender settings as well as the series/parallel settings. All work just as they say they will and it is SO easy to make the changes. To bright, change the tone pot value. To thick, again change the tone pot value. These settings are avaidable at the flip of a switch. No soldering involved. Wanna swap a pup, again no soldering involved. Overall I give it whatever the highest rating is. It does what it says and does it well. This would be a great way to make a Squire Strat or MIM Strat sound great from the gate. The difference would be huge!! I will make this a part of every Strat I own from now on! The only gripe I have is one of my own dupes. I replaced the bridge pup (Hot Noiseless, Fender) for a S.D. Hot rail. The Noiseless I had just went bad and sounded horrible. I decided to put the Hot Rail in to be as hot a the Neck pup as well as be a bit thicker. P.S., if ya put a Hot Rail in your Strat, it dont sound like a Strat on that pup anymore! So I am gonna go back to the Hot Noiseless to get the Fender sound back. Easy fix now, no soldering hehehe. This is a great product and well worth the money compared to buying the different pickups, tone pots, as well as pickup selector switch. Not to mention the labor costs if ya have a tech do the work. I dont normally write reviews but in this case its nessary. The product works and works well. Its worth the money. Make your Strat sound the way it should!! Put it in and I will be speechless if ya dont like it. Seriously.

I put this in my 91 American Standard strat and from now on, any pick guard upgrade will begin with this device. I had also purchased a new am dlx with the S1 button. Now I may send that back because the '91 am std toneshaper sounded better than the new am dlx noiseless n3 s1 wiring... this mod can save you buying a new guitar!Instantly provide several wiring(vintage, series, modern, blend), tone pot options, all selectable by dip switchs with NO SOLDERING. now pickup swaps are completed as fast as you can restring.this could be the best hundred dollar upgrade you can do to any strat. even in standard wiring mode, tone improvement is significant.docs lack clear definition of which wiring mode(series, modern, blend) and switch position used turns on which pick ups. definate recommend to ANY strat with a normal 5 way switch. if i ever changed pickups in a pickguard, i would also install the tone shaper then... just WOW... excellent product...

Excellent choice if you want to spruce up a cheaper Mexican / squire strat. Even if you aren't interested in all of the customization options, there is an obvious improvement in sound quality after replacing the stock electronics with this kit. Dollar for dollar, I can't think of a better option (especially if you replace the stock pickups, too).It is very easy to install and requires no soldering. Instructions are clear and informative. The only problem I had: when the pickup wires were plugged into the unit, they blocked the pickguard from resting flush against the guitar body (on a Mex standard strat). I had to re-route the wires in an unusual fashion to get it to fit (again, no soldering, just a pain).Anyway, highly recommended. I wouldn't write a review otherwise.
