This product works very if you have average intelligence and can READ instructions. For years I have tuned by ear and still do in most cases, however the Tunebot works very well at dialing in a close tuning if you tune to a specific pitch. I play DW Collectors drums and each shell is stamped with a resonance pitch. I tune very close to what DW recommends and usually by 3rds depending on the key of the majority of songs I'm playing to. For the folks who have problems with using this device I would suggest (1) reading the instructions and follow each step exactly. (2) buying new drumheads (3) buying a drumkit that actually produces a percussive sound and tone or (4) start playing guitar. The Tunebot is not meant to replace your ears, but will put you in the ballpark relatively quickly and EASILY if you follow instructions. I will agree that it does produce some erroneous readings from time to time, but commonsense adjustments with the unit should remedy most of these. Using this, I've been able to completely retune a 5 piece kit in under an hr. It works far better than a drum dial or torque key. One of the most useful drum tuning products to come along ever. It will not replace your ears, but it will get you closer to where you want to be much quicker than any other method out there.

I bought this product out of curiosity more than anything. And I got sucked in because I like new tech. I was interested to see what musical notes some of my drums represented (to see if those shell frequencies stamped inside my drums actually meant something meaningful... They don't BTW). Now I feel ashamed that I was taken for a ride. It was a mistake. Ah, but there are no mistakes in life, just lessons...

As a practical and easy tuning device, this product is a waste of money. It has a hard time zeroing in on frequencies. It is easily affected by overtones, even with the filter. It doesn't work well on bass drums or snare-side heads especially, and you will not be able to use it in any type of noisy environment, like backstage, or if you have to change a head between sets. The Tune-Bot takes something very simple and makes it very, very complicated. It applies too much science, where science is just not necessary. We are tuning drums here, not flying the Space Shuttle.

Drums are not perfect pitch instruments, they are made of wood (a non-perfect, natural material), with polyester film stretched over them. So what if one lug is 5 Hz lower than another? If the drum sounds good, why over manage it? It will just make you nuts.

I've been playing drums for over 35 years. I'll share some simple, friendly advice to those of you less experienced: Learn to tune by ear and feel, and trust your ears. It's not as complicated as all the voodoo you see on the internet, or as all the folks with miracle tuning devices (like this one) make it out to be. The only tool you need is a drum key. Tuning is not that hard. And with just a little practice you can get really good at it, and get great drum sounds. No mathematical formulas, pitch measurements, filters, ratios, charts, etc. You shouldn't need a calculator to tune your drums!

Honestly, save your money and buy something you really need, or something to add to your kit to make more music. There is a lot of cool drum and percussion gear worth your hard-earned money. The Tune-Bot is not.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

I got a Tune-bot for Christmas, and I am disappointed. I read the instuctions, watched a couple of videos, and tried it. And tried and tried...After a few days, I gave up. I've tried tuning two snares & two toms, with no luck. I can hit the head at the same lug three-four times, and get a wildly different reading each time. I've tried the filter, same thing. I wonder, is this still a prototype? I've never used a Drum Dial, so I can't compare the two. Save your money, trust your ears.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

This thing works. I have constant ringing in my ears from my time in the military. So it is hard for me to pick out small differences in tone. So for me I can get a drum tuned much more quickly with a tunebot. Is it necessary for everyone? No. Do some of us need it? Yes. Am I embarrassed about needing it? No.
Yes it can have issues with snare side heads especially if your snare bed is extra deep or narrow. But if for some reason you cannot get this thing to zero in on a frequency or you have trouble getting the head at each lug to the same frequency, you have one of three problems. 1) Your bearing edge is not perpenidular to the shell of your drum. Take off your head and hoops, place the bearing edge on a flat surface and if a carpenter square or other device to guage a 90 degree angle doesn't line up perfectly to the shell all the way around, the tunebot will have troubles. (but then so does your drum). 2) Your drum is not perfectly round. 3) there is too much other noise going on in the room.
In essence this thing is a small computer. Garbage in = Garbage out. I am confident that most problems with this thing are user error. Once you get over the learning curve and understand how to get it working you will appreciate it.
One tip, if you are having issues with getting consistent readings, try holding the tune bot above the center of the drum as you tap around the head. Sometimes leaving it clipped to the head in one place does not work.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

Basically, this does exactly what it says it does. You can, indeed, tune your drums and get very good tuning and sounds with it. Primarily, I got this because I was curious.

Here's the main positive from me: I can tune my kick drum with it so that not only is there short sustain, but it has a great rebound! That is truly the best thing that I will get out of this, and why I will continue using it.

Now, what are the cons? well, it costs a pretty penny for one. Not really worth it unless you tune your drums with great scrutiny, like I do. Second, whenever I tune a bottom head on a snare, I have to basically "reset" the bottom head to get a pure tone. It IS possible to tune kick and bottom-side snares with this, but you have to know how. And frankly, most people will not have the patience to go through the processes.

It gets 3/5 stars because it works, I like it, but not everyone will. Plus, it doesn't train you to listen and tune by ear. Would I recommend to a friend? Yes, but only if they are just as OCD about their drum-tuning as myself. Otherwise, you're better off using your ears and two drum keys.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

Simply stated this device, in my opinion, does not do what the mfg claims. I could not get a consistent or accurate reading at the lugs, even with the filter on and in differential mode. I worked on this for well over 2 hours on a 10" tom. The mfg suggests getting within a range of .5 in differential mode for tuning yet, no matter how consistently I struck at 1 inch from the lug as recommended, I would get lug readings that varied, at times, over 20 full points. This is on the same lug and not between lugs, fairly new heads, on a fairly new Tama set with perfect edges.

I am really confused by all the high reviews wondering if employees of the manufacturer populated these as I could not get it to work even with instructions and online videos.

I returned the device and am back to using my trusty analog "Drum-Dial". I was hoping the Tune-Bot would shorten the time to fine tune my drums but, for me anyway, it failed at all levels.

Other comment, the online video demo was done with a pre tuned drum, which made it a convincing video. Also, the person demonstrating mentioned having your drum pretty much tuned before using the device, using the device to "fine tune", which to me seems to defeat the purpose of plunking down that much cash for a device to tune your drums.

I'd love to hear from the manufacturer comments or suggestions.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

I have had this tuner for several months and tuned 3 different drum kits with it. I can tune each drum on my rock kit(bass and 5 toms) in about 30 minutes then about 10 minutes of fine tuning after I get the kit back together. It sounds great.

          Two key things for me:
          1. The big issue this solves for me is to get each drum very close to in-tune AND properly spaced in relation to each other. I used to get each drum to sound great by itself and then put the set together and the sonic spacing between drums would be uneven. Not a big deal on my jazz kit with only two toms ... but a big deal on my rock set with 5 toms.
          2. Be realistic about the tuning you're trying to accomplish ... I can't get a super low fundamental tone at the low reso setting ... just too big a spread between top and bottom heads ... the low tuned head won't hold the pitch. I have had much better success with the high or mid reso spread ... in tune the resonance sounds so good I have rarely had to use other muffling.

My best advice is go directly to their web site as soon as you get this and read both the 7 page manual and the 10 page tuning tips. Once you understand the concept of fundamental pitch and spacing the top and bottom heads to control resonance, use the tuning calculator to dial in the tuning you're after.

This is a great tool ... understand how to use it to accomplish what you're after and it's worth every penny.

Have always "thought" my drums were tuned...I was close, but now I'm dead on !! And once I heard the full notes I spent the time to experiment with my 10 drum set and selected different tone patterns. I have never been so pleased with my vintage Ludwigs.

Yes, difficult to learn, but then easy to use. OK, I will tune your drums for you cause I love playing with this device.

Had a recent drummer in the studio who called back the next day to rave about my drum sounds, it took that long to get over his initial shock. The bass is a 2nd Octave D note and it moves the hair on your legs as you play. Full notes give much greater sound penetration.

You can't go wrong with tuning your drums using this device (it ain't a toy), it took me about 20 hours on the Acoustic Ludwigs and the LP Percussions in my studio. Next I will attack the E-Drums.

Sure hope the Guitar Center stores start using these to tune the demo drums, sure would make for more pleasant visits.

I went to the Tune Bot website and used the "tuning calculator". Simple! Put in the size of your drums and if you want alot, med, or a little resonance and go to work. I tuned mine to Hrtz (per the chart) and they sound GREAT! Get it! Easy to use right out of the box. Even includes 2 AAA batteries! Can't wait for my drums to sound awesome at every show

This can be a great tool to have, but like any tool, it can make things more difficult than it should be. It can help you learn more about proper tuning, and it can also expose/teach you what to listen for and what not to listen for, when tuning. One purpose I think hasn't been suggested, is that it will help find the fundamental note, so that if you're micing a drum through a PA, you can center that frequency with the EQ and really get the drums to come through...

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

I've been playing for 24yrs as a hobby and haven't been able to "perfect" tuning. I have done ok but sometimes when I play flams or double stops on two toms I can tell they are out of tune/pitch. I used this once and everything sounds right on. I tried the recommended frequencies from the manufacturer for my toms and found that they sounded great but I like my birch toms a little lower than they suggested so I tuned down to my frequency and locked them in. I highly recommend this to anyone struggling with learning the ins and outs of tuning by ear. With some practice, I may not need this all the time. I can feel my ear honing in on the right sound.

As for the the cons, there are sometimes when the frequency jumps around but if you hit the same spot a few times and one jumps out of "normal" it is easy to get right back on track. This is a great tool something I have been looking forward to for a long time!! Highly recommended!!

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

The electronic tuner. Well, imagine you are a person who would just like to sit down an play a drum kit that sounds great. If you are not motivated or have time, your going to have trouble using this device. You will need to figure out, how you want your drums to sound, what resonance really means, and do your homework. Other than that, this device is a great tool for tuning correctly. It's performance depends greatly on the quality of you lug setup and quality. You can get the cheapest kit to sound pretty good, but it'll take a little more work. It's worth the investment, but they could bring the cost down to something a little more reasonable($50 sounds more practicle). It's the best on the market, so they've got you there. If they could offer pre-programmed tuning of some of our favorite drummers, it would be worth it even more.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

Before I begin my review, let me start off by describing my kit. I have a PDP X7 kit, all maple, with a 14x5 snare drum. 8", 10", 12", 14", and 16" toms. Along with a 22x18" bass drum.

This product is packaged well, and comes with instructions, and a little velvet bag. It has a clip with rubber, and grooves within the rubber. It sits fairly securely on the metal rims of my drums.

You simply hit power, and mount to the rim, with the microphone pointed towards the head. Then strike the drum in the center, while on a stand, to measure the fundamental pitch. Then you place your finger in the center of the drum and tap about an inch away from the lug with your drumstick, and you should get a reading quite higher than the fundamental pitch. You would then based on the reading, tune your lugs higher, or if you were pretty close to your target Hz reading, you would click filter and begin to fine tune each lug.

If you have any trouble with it, check out the plethora of videos on Youtube.

I went to the tune-bot website, and went to their tuning guide to tune my snare drum, I tuned the top lugs to around 229hz and the bottom lugs to around 343 hz. The fundamental note was around 3E. My snare drum sounded excellent, and I was completely blown away!

I then went to their website, and followed their tuning calculator, choosing my drum sizes, and chose medium resonance with my batters tighter than the resos. All toms came out sounding great!

The ONLY con I really could find, is that it can't clip on a bass drum hoop, but the way to fix that, is to clip it on a drum stick, and set the tune-bot and drum stick down on the hoop and it will rest fine. Also it's made of plastic, which isn't a huge deal, but I would really prefer a metal casing!

This product is for EVERYONE, whether you're good or bad at tuning. You can save the pitches that you liked, so you can always return to the same sound! My only question is why was this not invented sooner. Do yourself a favor and just get this thing, your drums will sincerely thank you, and will have never sounded so good!

Sufficiently revolutionary invention, as far as all the previous tuners operated solely by mechanical rather than musical.However,Tune-Bot replaces your ears (so to speak).Even more .... it allows you to tune the drums completely accurate ... exactly as you need.Relatively easy to use, and may be cheaper, but I think it is worth it.Buy it, and your drums will always be ready for battle!

There is a bit of a learning curve with this device but once you get the hang of it, NOTHING will get your drums sounding better. Don't let people try and say that the device is useless or they can't get it to work...that's because they didn't give enough effort and time. Once you learn the basics and start to get used to it, it's amazing. BUY THIS!! Beats the heck out of DrumDial.

I bought this tuner and hoped it would improve my drum sound. It didn't work on my toms very well. Had to use my drum dial on them but it works great on tuning the snare drum.

After 10 yrs drumming, you want the best sound, YOUR sound. This isn't a set it right quick and forget it tuner. But together with your ears it's a slammin' combination. First you get fundamental pitch of each drum to build on. Above all be very patient and you will be rewarded with 3 essential sounds, full resonant, note bend, and high attack lower resonance. The mistake most are making is lugs only need tiny tweaks, as in 1/16 to 1/8 lug turns or less when matching lug frequencies. This is serious gear and gets you 90% there, throw in your ears and it teaches so much about tuning each drum in YOUR kit and sound you want. Highly recommended~!
