OVERVIEW

Two-tier portable column-style keyboard stand with boom attachment, telescoping boom and tote bag.

A NAMM Best of Show, Ultimate Support's APEX Series Keyboard Stands represent over two decades of research and development and are used all over the world by gigging keyboard players and touring musicians. The AX-48 Pro Plus bundle includes the venerable AX-48 Pro (Black), AX-48 Pro Mic Boom, and AX-48 Pro Tote. The APEX Series is the finest looking keyboard stands on the market, and are intended to shine the spotlight on keyboard players, while securely supporting their prized instruments.

Simple Setup and Tear Down
Setup and tear down takes seconds with the AX-48 Pro. It breaks down into a single, slender unit that's easy to transport and doesn't take up hardly any room because the hollow column becomes its own carrying case. The legs remain connected and slide into and out of the base of the column, and the arms that support your keyboards are stored in compartments at the top of the column.

Sleek, new design
The modern look and shape of the APEX AX-48 Pro brings the keyboard player out from behind a stack of no-character keyboard stands, and into the spotlight with the rest of the band. The footprint of the new AX-48 Pro has not changed from the previous APEX, but now offers an updated column design that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is performance-ready.

APEX-quality features
Everything keyboard players have come to appreciate about the APEX keyboard stand for over two decades is still available in the new APEX AX-48 Pro. It's the original column-style keyboard stand that securely holds two keyboards out of the box (up to 125lb. each). The patented Tri-bar arms are height adjustable, the support legs are super stable, and it's incredibly easy to setup, tear down, and transport from gig to gig.

Professional Tri-bar Arms
Keyboards, synthesizers, and keyboard workstations have evolved in the last two or three decades since the original APEX was developed. The APEX AX-48 Pro now ships with two sizes of Tribar arms (one set of 13" arms, and one set of 18" arms) to safely hold today's keyboards, synthesizers, and keyboard workstations of all sizes.

Includes a Mic Boom and Professional Tote
The AX-48 Pro Plus bundle includes the best microphone boom arm ever developed for live performance, the Ulti-Boom (Telescoping) and an adapter that fits right on top of the APEX keyboard stand! What's more, this bundle includes a professional tote that not only houses the keyboard stand, but also has a dedicated space for the Ulti-Boom. The AX-48 Pro Plus is the perfect bundle for the keyboard player who gigs often and also sings!

Comments about Ultimate Support APEX AX-48 Pro Plus Keyboard Stand:

I've owned many stands, the x style, the z style, and the four leg fold out style. I've yet to find the perfect stand and this one is no exception. That being said, there are some great qualities about it. First of all, everything you've already read about it being the most portable and easily packed is true. It took up way less room in my Jeep SUV than my old Z style 2 tier stand. Also the time it takes to actually set it up is less than a minute. It's built like a tank and I was not afraid of it tipping for the most part. The only way in which I feel it might tip is towards you, and that's fine being that you'll probably be sitting or standing behind it most of the time.

The negative's you've probably read, I found to be mostly true which are: One, I used it with a Nord Electro3 HP 73 key (bottom) and Nord Electro3, 61 (top) and even got the attachment and arms for a third tier with shorter arms to hold my Novation Mininova at the very top. Even without the third tier, the bottom keyboard still wobbled enough while playing that I found it annoying. If you are familiar with these boards you know that none of them weigh over 25lbs. The others didn't really move, but again the bottom left moved enough to make me a little uneasy. Note they don't slide around, I'm talking about tipping.

It is also true that the mic stand will strip and is hard to mount. I'd recommend getting a quick release mic stand mount for it. Ultimate makes one that looks pretty decent. I'd say it's a must if you plan on using the mic stand. The actual telescopic stand that comes with it is heavy duty and really nice.

The bag is kind of cheap. It's a step up from those bags you get with the Chauvet light stands but is a nice add on if you really don't want any scratches on the stand. It also has an extra zip pocket to hold the mic stand which is nice.

Make sure when moving the packed stand around that you have securely clipped in the lid so the arms don't fall out. I found that out the hard way.

But back to the stand itself... Another thing is that I had a hard time with was mounting the boards close enough together. If put them too close together then you can't get to the lower's controls, while if mounted too far apart (for me) it creates slightly awkward playing/reach. So I actually sacrificed my ability to fully see/reach the controls on the lower board so I could more easily jump to my B3 sounds on the second tier. And for the third, top tier, the arms stuck out so far I had to pull out the middle board away from the column so that the third tiers arms wouldn't stick out past the front of the board. And then I had to pull the lowest board away from the column so I would not snag my hands on the arms of the second board and so on… (did that make sense)? Doing all of this made the whole rig less sturdy. This board will also only allow you mount the boards flat, no angles. I'm actually fine with that.

Lastly, there's the issue with your pedals. If you have a three or even a two keyboard set up, then you'll likely have at least 3 pedals. In my case I use two control/volume pedals, one sustain and two latching pedals. In all honestly it doesn't matter how many you use they still will not sit well position-wise with this stand. I actually set them up on the horizontal support legs which put them on a about 20 degree angle and most of them moved the whole time. You could easily make, or probably buy a pedal board to sit nicely on the legs, but then tisk tisk, you're now back to hauling in more gear which was counter intuitive to us buying this stand in the first place. Unless of course you bought it based on looks.

Speaking in terms of a multiple keyboard set up in most cases you are using your own mixer. With my z-stand I used a pedal board which housed an 8 channel mixer and all my pedals which I just slide underneath the whole thing. Now I have to put this gator mixer bag next to me on the floor and run cables from it around and up to the inputs (messy). I actually take up more space now!

I hate reviews that ask the reader questions at the end, and trust me I think I've read every one about this stand that's out there, so I'll leave you with this:

I like this stand but it's far from perfect. I'm honestly on the fence, but after writing this I can see that there are more con's than pros for me anyway. It's probably the best THREE tier stand out there. There are definitely better, less expensive, less packable, heavier TWO tier boards available (ultimate Z stands etc) that are better suited for gigging musicians. The crazy thing is that there is still something about this stand that I really like. I can't quite put my finger on it. I can't believe it, but I'll probably keep it.

Comments about Ultimate Support APEX AX-48 Pro Plus Keyboard Stand:

When I first received this, I really thought this was the answer. Small footprint, relatively stable, easy enough to assemble, very compact in the case, clean appearance. However... within three gigs one of the legs snapped, the mic stand stripped out, the cover that holds arms in place cracked... basically, useless now. My last stand (which I went back to) was a cheap X type, over 12 years of gigging, and still useable, if ugly. Extremely disappointed. Such poor quality. The cheezy, MF x-stands are a quarter of the price, and much better quality and stability. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement.

Comments about Ultimate Support APEX AX-48 Pro Plus Keyboard Stand:

Easy set up, legs don't interfere with pedals .. which is important to me, as I play guitar also, so my pedals are easy to get to. Don't like the threads on the Mic boom ......... have to be very careful when installing, not to cross thread it !

Comments about Ultimate Support APEX AX-48 Pro Plus Keyboard Stand:

Boom design impossible to gig with. The mic boom screws onto a fine threaded stud on top of the main trunk. It takes about 20 revolusions to screw completely on. The boom, altho short, is awkward to manuver. Mine cross threaded first night! Thankfully it held up thru the gig. I own the previous model Apex stand so I was able to swap boom parts around and modify the new stand with the older boom attachment and top clamp. Slide it in and tighten wing nut. Walla! One other small gripe, bag could have been a couple inches longer.
