Best ear protection I have tried

    Comments about Vater Earplugs:

I used to use those orange foam earplugs that you buy at pharmacy stores. They work, but tend to cut out all but the lowest frequencies. So if you love watching metal bands you will mostly just hear bass and drums. Definitely no solos. But these earplugs do the job well and I have had my first pair for easily two years now. I use them with the red inserts for maximum protection - they cut about 30 dB of sound. The green inserts cut out about 20 dB. The frequencies are reduced evenly so most metal concerts will sound well mixed even when you are way up front. For my own band the red inserts are overkill (and in fact, that's why I am buying a second pair to use with the green inserts).

      Comments about Vater Earplugs:

This was for my teen son. He's around loud music 4 to 5 times out of the week. He tried the red ones first but he said it felt like just regular ear buds, it shuts out everything. Plus, the colorful buds sticking out were embarrassing to him. And, I really saw no purpose for the light blue string that came with it perhaps because I wasn't sure where it goes, the obvious seemed on top of the green or red buds... A step-by-step or visual instruction maybe would've helped. Anyway, he refuses to wear them. The only thing I liked was the little black container.

            Comments about Vater Earplugs:

I've used Pacato hearing protectors for a while. They were cheaper (on sale) and high quality, but I lost them and wanted something with a sturdier case. I regret this purchase.
-The sound quality is terrible, even foam earplugs are more pleasant. I am a drummer, and everything has a 'hissy' quality to it. Things are still loud at many frequencies, and not an even attenuation at all.
-They are hard, and poke out of your ears, so anything that touches them; from your fingers, to your hair, to the vibrations of your body are drastically amplified.
-On that note, there is much occlusion affect (your own voice muffling all else), so they are not good for parties.
-Also, the case is not shiny black like the picture, but hot pink textured aluminum. It makes that terrible sound like nails on a chalkboard, as when rubbing those overrated metal sticks together. I don't want that sound on my keychain.
-Apparently Vater's design team forgot about this thing called "quality assurance".

              Comments about Vater Earplugs:

These plugs have worked well for me for several years. I have hearing damage from so many years of playing live music. Reducing the volume not only protects and preserves my hearing, but loud levels can distort it as well. I go without them for a song or two, to get my bass dialed in, and then all the sounds become relatively quieter with them in. On some gigs I use them on the "loud side" in just one ear, and that's good enough. Out of several brands, I keep coming back to Vater.

With adding things in your ears, there is a change in tonality... so get your mix tonality first, then use the plugs. Had no trouble using them to mix the show. our FOH is running about 107Db and these work great with the "red" filter.

                Vater Earplugs Item # 420966000000000

                By Phil hurtado

                Comments about Vater Earplugs:

I bought these ear plugs hoping to reduce the volume and still be able to hear everyone in the band. I tried changing the red and green filters supplied but had a hard time hearing the vocals so I pulled the filters out completely. They work really well and I can hear everyone just fine.

                Not bad for the $

                By Anonymous

                from Undisclosed

                Comments about Vater Earplugs:

I find they work better in situations where I'm listening to performances (ie concerts) than in situations where I'm playing (live drums). The problem I have with them is that the vocals they let in while I'm playing are distorted by overtones (and not necessarily overtones that are in the key we're playing). I can hear what I'm playing just fine but have a hard time hearing vocals in my band. Still, for the money, I'm not expecting miracles. It's a pretty good product.
