This is an excellent alternative to the stock beater that came with your bass drum pedal. I'm amazed that drummers spend so much time and energy selecting the perfect drum heads and sticks and then just accept whatever beater came on their bass drum pedal. I was turned on to this beater by Daniel Glass when he borrowed my kit for a show. I was surprised how the drum sound changed when he replaced my current beater with the Vic Firth. I was hoping he would forget it was on the set when he left. No such luck. So I ordered one for myself. Very versatile with the flexibility to change surface shapes and works great too with a double pedal. It has served me well in live performances and especially in the studio. Definitely worth serious consideration if you are serious about your bass drum sound.

When placed on the DW 9000 Double pedal, you can only use the narrow face of these beater or they will not clear each other. Immediate disappointment there, but a minor issue. They are lighter weight than the stock DW 2-sided plastic/felt beaters, which is not what I was hoping for from a feel perspective, but if your preference is to go lighter/smoother they will deliver in that department. The sound is good, not a dramatic change but a slightly more defined bass drum tone, again it's really preference. What you would expect for a wood beater, but since they are too light for me and don't come with weights like the DW wood beaters, I can't recommend them. The price probably reflects this. Overall I would rather go for the stock DW plastic, or weighted maple beaters instead, but they were not in stock.

Comments about Vic Firth VicKick Bass Drum Beater Radial Head:

I bought this beater after purchasing a new kit (Q mahogany drums) and wanting to get the best sound out of the drums I could. I have a DW 9000 double pedal and always have used the plastic side for attack and punch. Those beaters have been great, but I wanted to give a wooden beater a shot again to see if I could get more low end and punch from my bass drum. I was always a little leery about a plastic beater, thinking wood may be better (we use wooden sticks on the other drums), but the wooden beater I had tried in the past was too heavy (Gibraltar red model). This VicKick wooden beater is great. For me, it was better or just as good as the DW beater in key areas. First, it feels great. It weighs close to the same as the DW, maybe a touch lighter, but not much. It has a nice feel on the head and allows for nice quick strokes. Secondly, I was able to get a bit more low end from the beater and it was every bit as loud...maybe the increased low end gave the impression of even a little added volume. It also sounded a tad fuller. It had nice attack and overall, was an improvement over my DW plastic beater. I have it oriented so the rounder, wider side is hitting the head, not the radial position, although that sounded good as well, very close to the same effects. So, if you're like me and are looking for a powerful, full kick drum sound with nice attack to sound great in a PA, this beater is one to check out. I really like it and I'm very picky about what I use on my kit. It feels and sounds better than my DW plastic beater. It's not a day and night difference, but a noticeable one for the better and that works for me.

I bought two of these for my double bass drum pedal. Has a really nice balanced weight and feel to it. In my opinion the perfect weight. It adds click to your bass but also tone. You can really dig into the skin with this without it sounding choked. You can really tell Vic firth focused on sound with this product. And it feels great. Seems sturdy as well.

Comments about Vic Firth VicKick Bass Drum Beater Radial Head:

I am using the felt beater on my DW 9000 single pedal and truly love it. I feel like you get a truer and warmer sound using this beater. I also find if you bury the beater against the head it isn't as sharp an attack and still has warmth. I'm playing with the flat side. For me, I don't like the clicky , plastic sounding beaters. I tried the hard felt from other companies but have found I truly like this felt beater better. To me this beater provides a warmer smoother tone from my bass drums.

This is a good quality beater. It's doesn't have a click like the stock beater on my dw3000. This pedal gives a warmer tone which I'm looking for. I know some people want that plastic sound, if you're looking for that this isn't it.
