        This pedal is made of very strong rubber and should meet most needs for an expression pedal. The big problem is that most people find the pedal changes volume or MIDI values in the first 5 degrees of movement, making it almost useless for most generic applications. The reason the F7 expression pedal does this is the unit contains a single 50k ohm variable potentiometer (resistor). Yes, ALL expression pedals are about as complicated as a volume knob on your guitar. In fact that is exactly all they are.

        Here is a simple fix to make your F7 volume expression pedal work for your keyboard or guitar effects unit.

        We need to change the potentiometer from a 50k to a 10k ohm pot. However you don't have to replace the 50k ohm pot. Instead you can add a simple 12.5k ohm resistor in parallel with the pot. This will reduce the effective resistance to 10k ohm.

        Why does this work?
        When you put resistors in series, the resistance adds up. Imagine pumping water through one narrow opening, and then adding a second narrow opening in series. It will slow the water further. Same thing for electricity.

        When you put resistors in parallel, you provide two parallel paths for electricity to flow.

        Here's the math:
        R2 = R1 × Rtotal/ (R1 − Rtotal)
        Where:
        Rtotal = 10k ohms – the desired value
        R1 = 50k ohms - the F7 potentiometer
        R2 = the resistor we want to put in parallel
        Do the math, R2 = 12.5k ohm

        The resistor should be connected from the shield (ground) to the top of the pot.

                I use an FC7 on each of my two Mellotrons. They are pretty much the standard replacement expression pedal for most Mellotronists; much better than the originals. Action is smooth and volume increase/decrease is very even. For the price, it can't be beat.

                  Comments about Yamaha FC7 Volume Pedal:

                  If pedal works not the way you expect and volume jumps it is a compatibility issue between the pedal's potentiometer(A or B taper/law) and the keyboard circuitry. There are A(logarithmic)and B(linear)taper potentiometers. Letters A or B marked on pots, i.e 50kA or 50kB. If volume jumps replace the pot with the other letter on it.If you have a B-taper pot you can keep it and simulate the A-taper pot by soldering a simple resistor to the pot. Electrician can help you calculate the resistor value. If you have A replace it with B. If you have B replace with A.Or simply buy compatible keyboard for your pedal.

                  Comments about Yamaha FC7 Volume Pedal:

                  This is a good solid pedal that works great with my Yamaha Motif. It is smooth and dependable, and is built to last. I have to admit, I didn't even know about the "fortissimo function" until I downloaded the manual and discovered this feature. Embarrassing since I am usually a 'read the manual' type of guy.

                  Great volume pedal

                  from Berkeley, CA

                  Comments about Yamaha FC7 Volume Pedal:

                  This pedal is well built and has 30 degrees of travel which is great for organ. Please note that the people who have been complaining about the pedal going crazy for only a few degrees, and then nothing for the rest of the way are just using an incompatible keyboard. The wiring for volume pedals between keyboard manufacturers is not standardized. You can modify the pedal to be compatible if you know how to use a soldering iron, or you can buy an adapter. I had to do this so it would work with my Nord Electro.
