I received this as a birthday gift from my wife, and my 19 year old daughter decided that she wanted to get one also (she's been playing guitar for a couple years). She chose a Luna "TC MAH" tattoo uke, and we've spent quite a bit of time playing these together this afternoon and comparing them. While they have slightly different features, and are around the same price, the Luna is clearly a better quality and better sounding uke. Part of that may be the better strings on the Luna, and that it has a better set-up (no sharp frets, lower action) and a larger body (3/8" wider lower bout; 1/8" thicker sides).

I'll be taking this Kohala back and exchanging it for a Luna Tattoo model (yes, I have my wife's permission!). It's not a bad uke - a set up would certainly help - but the Luna is *that much* better for a little less money.
At this price, this is a well featured uke. While the body is laminated woods, the mahogany has very nice color and grain in it. It has body binding and neck binding, with fret markers both on the side of the neck and on the fingerboard. Solid tuners, and a compensated saddle. I mark it down one point for having cheap strings on it (compared to another uke of similar price); I suspect these have hald back the tone a bit.
It's well put together, and I don't see any glue residue inside the body. As mentioned above, the saddle is compensated, and the nut seems to be cut with good spacing, but the slots need to be lowered a little; it goes sharp on the lower frets, so it sounds out of tune on some chords.

The reason I rated it a little low is because of rough fret ends and high action. The neck seems straight, so the saddle needs to be lowered and the nut slots need to be lowered; this uke would play much better with a little more care to the set-up before it left the factory.
I was surprised at how well this was put together and how nice it looks at this price. It stays in tune, and it produces nice volume. A quality set of strings and a better set-up would take this uke up to a 9 or 10.

If you get it as the stupid deal of the day it's a good deal for a gift to a beginner. There are more substantial ukes available with better tone and manufacture. I'd suggest a visit to your local big box music store to examine before you buy. Wide range of quality even within some brands.

Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:

I just got into playing this Ukulele and I can honestly say it's truly exceptional for beginners to intermediate ukulele players. Its very well constructed, no creaks or noises when playing. Easy to tune, although it takes time for the strings to stretch. Give it a couple of days to settle in and it will sound great. Word of advice, change the stock strings. They aren't very good and sound terrible. Put Aquila ukulele strings or D'Addario ukulele strings and you'll see a significant difference in sound! I put the Aquila strings and its amazing! Changing the strings is also a piece of cake.

I'm able to play 4 songs already and I just got this a couple of days ago. Its very easy to play. It comes with a gig bag and tuner. Very good deal if you ask me. I highly recommend this ukulele for anyone starting out. You won't be disappointed!

Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:

This is nice concert-size uke for not a lot of money, especially if you get it on sale. Comes with a decent (unpadded) carry bag and clip-on tuner. I did change the strings (to Nylgut) and file the fret ends a bit, but beyond that it is very playable and has a good sound. The string upgrade made a big difference. Like all economy ukes (you can spend thousands on a premium uke), it is made of laminated woods. While laminate construction doesn't generally sound as rich as solid woods (more damping), it is more durable and less sensitive to temperature and humidity. A well-built little uke. That being said, it is a great uke for beginners, but also dragging around to casual events and parties where you won't have to worry about letting others having a go at it or getting it damaged. I leave the expensive ukes at home with their humidifiers.

Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:

First and foremost, this is a legitimate musical instrument. It's well-made, set up well, and very easy to play. At the MF price point, it's a great introduction to ukulele and stringed instruments in general. The binding is a nice touch, and while somewhat plain it's a very pretty instrument too. It is not a toy by any measure, which distinguishes it from many ukes at or near this price point.

The fact that it comes with a tuner and a (thin but attractive) gig bag did not hurt one bit. I bought it for my daughter, and it is head-and-shoulders above the instruments her classmates bought. I want her to not have to struggle to play, and fretting these strings is almost effortless. So while I could have gone with a cheaper uke, this one gives her the best chance of developing an interest in ukes.

Great value, very nice quality. Action maybe a little high, slight intonation issue, but these can be repaired easily.
Comes with a pretty good tuner too.
