I received this as a birthday gift from my wife, and my 19 year old daughter decided that she wanted to get one also (she's been playing guitar for a couple years). She chose a Luna "TC MAH" tattoo uke, and we've spent quite a bit of time playing these together this afternoon and comparing them. While they have slightly different features, and are around the same price, the Luna is clearly a better quality and better sounding uke. Part of that may be the better strings on the Luna, and that it has a better set-up (no sharp frets, lower action) and a larger body (3/8" wider lower bout; 1/8" thicker sides).

I'll be taking this Kohala back and exchanging it for a Luna Tattoo model (yes, I have my wife's permission!). It's not a bad uke - a set up would certainly help - but the Luna is *that much* better for a little less money.
At this price, this is a well featured uke. While the body is laminated woods, the mahogany has very nice color and grain in it. It has body binding and neck binding, with fret markers both on the side of the neck and on the fingerboard. Solid tuners, and a compensated saddle. I mark it down one point for having cheap strings on it (compared to another uke of similar price); I suspect these have hald back the tone a bit.
It's well put together, and I don't see any glue residue inside the body. As mentioned above, the saddle is compensated, and the nut seems to be cut with good spacing, but the slots need to be lowered a little; it goes sharp on the lower frets, so it sounds out of tune on some chords.

The reason I rated it a little low is because of rough fret ends and high action. The neck seems straight, so the saddle needs to be lowered and the nut slots need to be lowered; this uke would play much better with a little more care to the set-up before it left the factory.
I was surprised at how well this was put together and how nice it looks at this price. It stays in tune, and it produces nice volume. A quality set of strings and a better set-up would take this uke up to a 9 or 10.

It's a very nice instrument. It sounds great. I can take it anywhere. It's fun to play and a great learning and starter Uke. A little small for my big fat figners. I should have gotten a tenor or a baritone. I would have also likee a hard shell case.

I am a professional musician. I gave the KP-C Ukulele to a friend as a gift. She is a beginner (her first instrument), so it remains to be seen how it will work out. She was pleased with the appearance of it and commented on how light in weight it is. Once she learns how to tune it and play it, I'm sure she will enjoy it.

Solid wood, well built instrument. I normally play a spanish classical guitar or a Takamine Jumbo acoustic electric guitar. The Concert ukulele feels so tiny in comparison. But it has an amazing sound and is so simple and easy to play. I am very happy with it. A no-brainer purchase on a stupid deal of the day.

A good Uke for the money paid. Plus a carrying bag and a Tuner included. People that complain about it going out of tune have not stretched the strings or waited for them to stretch. If the problem is that the machine heads are slipping it is a simple matter to use a screwdriver to tighten the machine heads.

Excastly what I needed in a Uke. Smooth and easy to play. A bit tough tuning, since it doesn't seem to hold very well. But this is usually the case with ukeleles. For the money, a fantastic buy!

Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:

I always thought the ukulele looked like a fun instrument to try. After doing a little research, I decided a soprano would be to small for me, as I am 6'1" with long arms. I figured a concert size would be the way to get started. I picked one of these up for a great price on a Stupid Deal of the Day For the price I paid, I figured a uke with a gig bag and tuner was a no-brainer.. My first impressions when I opened up the package were mixed, The actual craftsmanship of the uke was nearly flawless - everything lined up perfectly and the binding was very nice. The frets were level, an although they could stand a little filing on the edges, not bad at all. The fretboard was a very nice piece of rosewood . The gig bag, while not padded, was a heavy cordura material with heavy duty zippers, and actually very nice. While I prefer my Snark tuners, the tuner was better than expected and easy to use. Where the I was disappointed was the finish and the sound. The wood itself was nice enough with some really nice grain pattern, but what the description called satin looked flat to me, which gave it a low budget look. I have satin finished guitars, so I know what satin is supposed to look like. This was flat. I decided to give it a few coats of Tru-Oil, and it really brought out the striping , the grain, and the color of the Mahagony. A huge improvement. If you've never used Tru-Oil to finish an instrument, you owe it to yourself to try it. I ordered a set of Aquila Nyl-gut strings, as I was not happy with the sounds I was getting from the stock GHS strings. What a huge improvement. It really brought life to it and now it's a joy to play. It sounds better than a budget instrument has a right to. I will probably replace the tuners with a set of Grover's the next time I re-string it. The set for a uke is cheap enough and one of the tuners is grinding a little bit, so it will probably be worth the upgrade. To sum it up, all it really needed out of other box was a better set of strings to become a competent ukelele. I'm very pleased with it and recommend it
