I think the tone is exceptional . It has a laminated top, bottom and sides, one piece neck, geared tuners, decent strings, excellent fit and finish, well thought out design and execution.
The included tuner works great. I enjoyed the Hawaiian instruction book (Da'kine). A person won't go wrong with this pack especially purchased thru a reputable dealer like MF.
The features were very acceptable for this price range. The gig bag is sure'nuff cool blue but some padding would have made this rating a 10.
Fancy woods or finish you won't find on this uke. It is however very straight and solid, yet light weight. The neck hardly flexed when the strings were tightened. There is binding on the top and fretboard. The fit is excellent. The finish is minimal which probably enhances the tone. A person could put any finish over it which wouldn't be the case if it were gloss or some other overdone finish. The action is a little high for me but the neck and fretboard are straight so the saddle could probably be lowered some. The strings are GHS tenor with what I think to be an aluminum wound 3rd string. The intonation on the second string (nylon) is way off as you go up the neck while all the other strings are dead-on. That isn't a really big deal for a ukulele and I think it is because that particular string is stretchy. Everyone says to get different strings, but I'm going to tie on the closest diameter classical guitar string that I have laying around just to experiment with first.
This is a great value as offered to me by MF. I consider this at the upper end of the scale for a first timer, which makes it a good one for a more accomplished player also. (Has anyone noticed how a really skilled player can make the cheapest bottom end instrument sound like a Stradivarius?)

I do not ordinarily write negative reviews. While not an amateur musician I am an amateur ukulele player, which means I play uke for fun. Out of over 20 ukuleles I've tried over the past year, right here is the worst one. I'll never touch another Kohala branded anything again. I thought my Lanakai tenor was mediocre but it is appreciated far more now. Even my Makala Dolphin soprano beats this Kohala tenor in tone and playability.

The Kohala Kanikapilia has lived in my closet since the day it arrived. I tuned it, checked intonation and hit one chord, then into the closet it went.

The unpadded bag and the tuner aren't the best either but better than the ukulele itself. I bought this as a STUPID DEAL OF THE DAY and thought I was getting a bargain. The neck binding looked sweet and unique. The looks suckered me in. So the question now is, how can a ukulele that looks so good sound and play so bad?

The setup is pathetic making it uplayable above the 4th fret. Yes, a pro setup probably might fix the action, but that would do nothing about the lifeless tone. In my opinion it isn't worth doing a pro setup because it would still sound like I'm playing underwater. What is wrong here simply won't be fixed by slapping on a set of Aquila Nylgut strings either. It comes with GHS strings and GHS makes good uke strings. I use GHS Hawaiian Strings on my Makala Dolphin of my own free will. I use Aquila strings on two other ukes and know what they can do, but they can't fix this pretty mess.

Some beginners never get far because they get a ukulele that fights against them. Right here is the Mike Tyson of ukuleles. It is a struggle for me to play even open chords on this thing and I halfway know what I'm doing. If I was a beginner and I had this uke I'd have given up quickly. Do not buy this for a beginner. Instead buy them ANYTHING else. I suggest the Makala Dolphin, a padded gig bag, a Snark tuner and spare strings which will all cost less than this Kohala model, yet will acutally be fun, playable and sound good.

And for the reviewer hoping the tone would get better with age, sorry but laminated ukes sound the same decades later as they sounded on day one. You are stuck with the tone of it forever.

To say this Kohala tenor sounds like a toy uke is an insult to toy ukes because I've played plastic toy ukes that sound and play better than this Kohala. It is pretty however, and it would look great hanging on the wall over your rattan Tiki Bar, just don't take it down and try to play it!

I would not recommend a Kohala Kanikapila tenor model to a friend. I wouldn't recommend one to my worst enemy either. This is the ukulele from Hades.

Comments about Kohala KP-T Kanikapila Tenor Ukulele:

Grabbed it as stupid deal of the day. Nice tone and plays well. Intonation is good. Has a sweet tone for laminates. I will upgrade to solid wood in the future but for now this works well and is fun to play. I replaced the strings two weeks ago and it still needs retuning everyday. Don't know if thats the nature of all ukes or the quality of the tuners. Grab one when it becomes stupid deal of the day again.

Whenever I play this ukulele, I strum 3 or 4 times and it goes out of tune. Very frustrating to have to retune over and over again.

I wanted a uke and around my part of the world where I live the same type of uke's were triple the price.
Shipping and handling was reasonable. Overall I'm a happy puppy. For a novice in ukulele like me, the tuner was a big plus so I can keep the instrument in tune and the booklet with chords gives me a head start.

Even came with a tuner and same blue case as the Lanakai for less than half the price. My friend loves it it. Sounds great and plays as well.

Very comfortable uke, sounds great too. Highest string loses it's tuning quite easy and the break-in period (going on about 10 days- just starting to stay in tune)seems quite long. I am new to nylon strings, so this might be normal. Great instrument for the price. Extras are great too- tuner, booklet and case.
