I have been playing guitar for 20 years, and wanted to get a gift for my 6 year old daughter who has shown some interest, so I ordered this ukulele since it would be much easier for her small hands to play than a guitar. What I got is much more than I expected. This is a very playable instrument. I didn't have any problems with tuning like some people have complained about. I think those people just don't have any experience with nylon strings. They stretch a lot. I had to tune the instrument about 20 times before the strings settled in. My experience with nylon stringed guitars is comparable. This ukulele tunes fine. The sound is not bad, though I'd expect some better strings would give it better sound. The wood of the instrument is better quality than I would have expected for $25. It sounds suprisingly bright. The frets are just fine, with no buzzing. The mechanics of the tuning pegs is fine. They don't slip, though I'm a little concerned that the plastic knobs might not hold up. The bridge seems great, except for the saddle which appears to have been molded wrong on one side, then cut with a razor knife to correct it. This doesn't affect the sound or anything, it just looks sloppy. The finish of the instrument is what you would expect for $25. It appears, for example, that the builder just put a thin piece of masking tape over each fret, then sprayed the whole ukulele with wood stain. The sides of the frets have wood stain on them. There are also various nicks and imperfections, especially around the headstock. On the back of the headstock is some oil or grease residue on the wood, where the tuning keys were hastily oiled. I expect it to wash off with some mild soap. None of these problems affect the playability of the instrument. I would highly recommend it to anyone as a first ukulele. You can get a Martin later if you decide you like playing.

I primarily play guitar, but am always interested in trying different kinds of string instruments. So, I bought Lanikai's Kohala ukulele just to see if I liked playing the uke with the intention of getting a better one later if I decided I liked it all that much. Well, I certainly didn't expect a perfect instrument for the low price tag, but this was ridiculous. The first wrong thing I noticed was that the white plastic rings around the string posts were in no way attached to the head and rattled when the strings were played. I removed the rings when I changed the strings. However, the problem that makes this so-called instrument extremely disappointing is the fact that the intonation is positively horrible. Even when played at the first fret, the notes are nowhere near on pitch, making this uke completely unsuitable for learning. Again, considering the price, I didn't expect a lot, but I at least expected an instrument that was halfway playable.I have since purchased Applause's UA10 ukulele and am much happier with it. As for my Lanikai, I plan on giving it to my friend's 4-year-old, since it is clearly only suitable for a child to bang around on.The only thing I liked was the color.

You get what you paid for

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

This is not an instrument meant for an experienced ukulele player. It doesn't have the BEST sound and it doesn't stay in tune like an expensive ukulele would. But, this is a great first ukulele for anyone who wants to learn. With this, you can learn your cords and notes and get used to the feel of a ukulele. It is not the best product out there, but it is a great starter.

        Almost Unplayable

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

I purchased the Kohala ukulele as a gift for a younger player to learn some basic chords and strumming patterns. When I finally saw the gift, the instrument as received from the factory was almost playable. It doesn't live up to the Lanikai nameHad the ukulele been sent to my home instead of the child's home, I would have returned it within the 45 day grace period. You get what you pay for! Buy a real Lanikai!

        Absolute Trash

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

This arrived about an hour ago, and I started tuning it (IT would also have a hard time staying in tune), I made a barre chord shape just like normal, and the neck snaps where it's connected to the body of the instrument. This is poorly made and cannot sustain a standard ukulele tuning.

Ive had this thing for a years now, and it's lasted me tossing it around and crap, so thats a plus. The sound isn't to exciting, but it really does get the job done. It does have an intonation problem, but it was overcome by tuning some notes sharp and some flat. Bottom line, if your not to picky than it will work for you.

        Not a good instrument

        By Travis Lee Wiggins

        from chicago, IL

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

I purchased this because I wanted the other Lanikai Standard Ukulele, but I settled on this one. Most of the instrument is intonated incorrectly. You'll have half the instrument in tune and a whole fret will be out of tune. This intonation increases as you go up the neck. You definitely want to get new strings, it appears the ones that came with the instrument are plastic? The Tuning heads don't keep in tune. This is basically a toy instrument, and I would definitely suggest paying more for a better instrument if you are going to actually play or record with it.

You Get What You Pay For...

I ordered this item because I wanted a cheap, functioning ukulele to learn on. Well, let's just say at least I got one of those things.I dunno if it's like this with all of them, but mine doesn't stay in tune, came with two dead frets, and also has general intonation issues (as in, all the strings can be in tune while playing open, but once you press down on the frets, not so much).Basically, this is good for a kid or someone who is really, really cheap and doesn't mind some tuning and craftsmanship issues.

        good value

        By Mummy Dreams

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

I have a few ukuleles that range in price and the quality of each is, for the most part, accurately correlated to price. I payed less for this one and unfortunately it shows. It holds its tuning but the sound and playability are sub par. For the price its decent, so if value is paramount, get this ukulele.

Good enough to get you started

Comments about Lanikai Kohala Standard Ukulele:

I've always wanted to try a uke, but I didn't want to spend the cash for something I wasn't sure I'd enjoy. Well, this little uke has definitely got me interested for a great price. It takes a lot of work to get the tuning stable and the upper frets don't have a great sound, but overall it has been a great beginner uke. Now I just need to figure out which uke will be my next upgrade.
