        Different but great

Comments about Lanikai O-6 6-String Solid Spruce Top Tenor Ukulele:

I purchased this to add to my uke assortment and it's very unique but fun to play. The sustain is amazing and the nato wood is gorgeous- one of the prettiest woods that I've seen. The spruce top is not too exciting but gives it a bright sound that helps distinguish the uke when I play along with someone on guitar. The price is a bargain for any 6-string, especially one that is solid wood. If you're considering a 6-string, I'd definitely try one of these out. I'd recommend trying one in person first, however, to see if it's really for you. The picking is much harder (but possible), the pressure required to press down all the strings is notably more, and the ability to bend pitch is lost on the doubled stings as they don't bend evenly.
This particular model doesn't have a pickup but I actually have the O-6E (same model, but with pickup). The tuning pegs are so-so. For this pricepoint I guess they're not bad, but my Kala has better pegs. Solid wood construction is really nice and overall it's a pretty Uke. The Nato wood on the sides and back is gorgious. The Spruce top is fairly unexciting, but the bright tone that it delivers is worth it. The inlay on the fretboard and bridge is nice- looks cool but nothing too pretentious. Though I don't know that it's a "feature," the headstock has an interesting design (besides the tuning pegs going towards the back rather than the side) there is a light colored wood behind the top veneer so the cut-outs for the strings shows a neat design. One last thing worth mentionging is that it's significantly louder than any other uke I've played. The nato wood version (LU-6) seemed quieter, but it could just be that this one sounds brighter.
The first unit I was shipped had serious issues (did not purchase through MF). It had a crack in the binding at nearly every fret (cosmetic), a grounding issue with the pickup, and worst of all- a bad rattle that made the pickup sound awful. That unit was replaced and I'm very happy with the new one which has none of these issues. The finish on the uke seems to be very high quality and everything is in its proper place. The uke came setup a little on the high side, but I think that's typical.
I think the pricepoint has to be considered here. I would put this one up against ones twice what it costs. I tried a Kala and prefered this. I also tried a much more expensive uke while in Hawaii and while I would say it was nicer, it was not THAT much nicer.

        Good Uke

Comments about Lanikai O-6 6-String Solid Spruce Top Tenor Ukulele:

never really owned such a strange instrument before, and had actually never heard of a 6 string uke. It's sure fun to play but it is mostly for strumming. Tabs and picking are slightly hard to do. The finish is awsome, the back of the uke is so gorgeous there is not a flaw with it. The reason I didn't rate this at a full 5 through out was because its very hard to keep in tune. You need to retune every time you play. It probably doesn't help that its tuners sit facing backwards on the head. I've had to customize tuning to a tuning application on my iphone to get it just right everytime, believe it or not it works.
