Should have gone with another brand

Comments about Lanikai S-C Solid Spruce Series Concert Ukulele:

I have owned this uke for four months now and I am tired of fooling with it. For the first couple of months, it was fine but then everything went downhill. Here are the pro's. It is a beautiful little instrument with strong projection and and excellent tone - when it decides to play properly. However, it has developed a vicious buzz in the bridge area that prevents me from getting any use out of it.

When I received the uke the action was too low to play above the fourth or fifth fret without fret buzz. Since bridge height is not adjustable on this model, I added a metal shim under the bridge which set the action properly. I also had my Luthier professionally install a Dean Markley transducer pickup attached to the underside of the soundboard. For three weeks or so, I had a great moderately priced electric uke with a phenomenal rich sound for a concert size.

But then, the buzzing started. I figured it had to be something to do with the pickup. Took it back to Luthier. Pickup was still firmly attached but he moved the cabling around to see if that was the problem. It wasn't. Amplified, the buzz is so bad you can't use it. Played hard with a pick acoustically the buzz is so bad you can't use it. Jazz chords with strong dissonance really set it off. The instrument is useful only if picked moderately with fingers and thumb and then not too aggressively. By accident I discovered that the buzz went away completely if you held firm pressure on the bridge with your fingers or thumb. Not the soundboard, only the bridge. Took the shim out to see if that was the problem. It wasn't. Bottom line, something in bridge attachment is buzzing at certain frequencies and sound levels.

Talked to Lanikai/Hohner. Their response was quick," courteous and completely frustrating. Since I had ""modified"" the unit they will not honor their warranty. My position is that the problem is with the bridge attachment", not my modifications. Gonna cost more than the uke is worth to get the Luthier to reattach the bridge properly. So, I am shopping for another Uke and it's not gonna be a Lanikai.

Another little tip about this Uke

        By Redland Fats

Comments about Lanikai S-C Solid Spruce Series Concert Ukulele:

After my last review, I found that the action still did please me. So, I loosened the strings again, removed the clipped section of string from under the saddle and replaced it with two cut to length pieces of steel wire from a large paper clip. It raised the action just enough to allow barre chords all the way up and down the neck without damping and gave another quantum boost to the projection and clarity. This little guy sounds much better than you would expect from a hundred dollar uke.

        BUY IT NOW!!!

Comments about Lanikai S-C Solid Spruce Series Concert Ukulele:

I bought this uke with low expectations, but i have to say i am VERY impressed with this instrument. The quality of instruments that come out of asia these days is quite encouraging. All that to say, the solid spruce top gives this uke a very lively sound and the sustain is awesome. Also, the geared tuners actually keep this thing in tune for a VERY LONG TIME!!! I've actually only tuned it once and that was when it came out of the box 3 days ago. Had minor finishing blemishes but nothing I really care about. Fantastic uke with an astonishing sound that only gets better with age.

A Beautiful Little Instrument ... but

        By Redland Fats

Comments about Lanikai S-C Solid Spruce Series Concert Ukulele:

I purchased this uke a few days ago. I was very impressed by the finish. It is a very expensive looking little instrument. The finish is bright and glossy and there were no obvious blemishes or faults. However, when I played the uke, I found the action to be far to low for my liking. There was a lot of fret buzz on the barre chords and it just didn't have a lot a projection. I talked to my local luthier about it. On his recommendation, I slipped a section of string under the saddle and replaced the high g top string with a low g string from a classical guitar. The change was nothing short of amazing. Raising the action allowed the strings to properly vibrate and the low g added a whole new dimension. The little guy absolutely sings now and actually even has acoustic sustain. Worth the money even if I had to fiddle with the setup.

Comments about Lanikai S-C Solid Spruce Series Concert Ukulele:

I recently played this ukulele at a music store near where i live. the action was amazing, it came with aquila strings, and it projected very well. what i was most impressed by was the very solid-feeling spruce top and impeccable gloss finish. A beautiful ukulele with beautiful tone. Seriously gave my makai tenor a run for its money.
