A deep, mellow tone provides a strong foundation for your tunes.

With its solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides, Lanikai's S-C Tenor Ukulele from the Solid Spruce Series has incredible projection for those late night jam sessions on the beach. Die-cast tuning machines ensure long hours of stress-free strumming.

The tenor uke produces deeper tone and slightly louder volume than the standard soprano body. It's ideal for performing on stage, as it provides lots of responsiveness. From rhythmic strumming to melodic finger-style progressions, this Lanikai S-T tenor ukulele sounds great.

With the easy playability and included instruction booklet written by renowned ukulele instructor Mary Lou Dempler, you will be playing in a matter of minutes. I was looking for a basic uke for stage use. I only work it in once or twice per set, so I didn't want to spend a ton of money on it. I use an instrument mic for the banjo and to supplement the guitars, so I was not concerned about having a pickup on board. I am fussy about tone, so I wanted a solid top.

The laminate mahogany back and sides increase durability without adversely affecting the sound, it looks nice, and since I am not buying a collector's intrument, I'm prefectly happy with it.

This uke totally exceeded my expectations in every respect.
This is presented (and priced) as a very basic instrument, and as such it has just the right whistles and bells.

Great intonation, projection, tone, and action. Tuners are smooth and precise. The strings it came with are fairly good. I played it for a month and everal gigs before I replaced them.

With the solid top, the tone and volume are excellent. The mahogany laminate back and sides are beautiful, sturdy, and project the sound well.
Fit and finish are great. The solid spruce top is nicely silked, the neck is nicely turned, and the trim, while simple, is very clean and nice.
        Great bang for the buck!

I will not be buying another Lanikai product.
It's got all the features a uke is supposed to have. However, some of the important features are not well executed.
-Bracing is poor. It's was loose and rattled for the first 4-5 months. It's stopped now but I'm afraid that lower fall humidity will bring back the rattle.
-Neck was not straight. Hump near 12th fret caused buzzing. The neck has slowly striaghtend itself out with the trade off being a much higher action than is comfortable. I removed a huge casting burr on the back of the bridge insert which helped. But, it's still too high. If the neck is done adjusting itself, great. If it keeps bending???
-Intonation is not great but tolerable...except for the "C" string, which always sounds a little off.
-Lanikai warranty and customer service is total nothingness. They do not respond. It's like no one is home.

        What's done well?
-Finish. It's pretty and is holding up well. Frets are smooth. I looks good and feels good. The tuners are OK.
-Sound. It has a nice sound when not rattling and buzzing. It's got a lot of volume and good sustain.
See what I wrote under features...I've owned this uke about 9 months and play it almost every day. It's satisfying to be learning but the more I learn...the less I think of this uke.
I have nothing to compare it to. On it's own? Well, it's got me playing and learning.

Comments about Lanikai S-T Solid Spruce Series Tenor Ukulele:

After several hours of online research,I ordered this ukulele during the holidays when I noticed it on sale. I've had it now a few weeks, along with a Snark ukulele tuner and the "Ukulele for Dummies" book. A great combination. When I was much younger, I took some guitar lessons and also played an old Gibson mandolin. Now, in my older years, I was looking for a very simple, easily playable stringed instrument. This is it. I can sing and chord along on "I'll Fly Away" and "Wayfaring Stranger" fairly well. If the instrument holds up as well as it looks and sounds, I should not need another. The fit and finish, inside and out, are very well done. When my novice fingers get sore, I switch over to my Hohner standard-key and Seydel low-key harmonicas. When my lips get tuckered out, back to the ukulele. Eventually I may be able to do them simultaneously. A very enjoyable way to pass spare time and learn something, instead of being a TV vegetable. Thank you Musician's Friend and Lanikai for a great product and great price.

Comments about Lanikai S-T Solid Spruce Series Tenor Ukulele:

Got this to replace a cheap (can't say the price)Deal-of-the-Day Kohala KP-T tenor uke I bought to try oo-koo-lay-lay. I massaged that Kohala quite a bit; lowered the action, REFRETTED (!)with Stew Mac Uke fret wire, refinished the neck and headstock in black lacquer, changed to Aquila low-G strings. Turns-out I was applying lipstick to a pig. Now it plays good, but still can't get a good tone from it. Apparently, plywood makes a bad ukulele top, period.

Bought THIS puppy on special for(can't say the price), and simply added an Aquila RED Low G string to the Aquila Nylguts it comes with; didn't touch anything else. BRILLIANT, even for a rank novice like me. Nice low action right out of the box, nice bright tones from the solid spruce top. As it's breaking-in, it's starting to develop good sustain and real nice harmonic overtones.

Construction is very good for a factory instrument; my guess is that the same uke lightly sprayed in nitrocellulose instead of a thick layer of urethane would be a shockingly good instrument instead of merely excellent.

If there's a caveat with this uke, it's that it doesn't have that Happy Puppy-Dog sound of a typical soprano ukulele. First, it's a tenor tuned to Low G, but most important it has a SPRUCE top. It really sounds more like a super-tiny classical guitar that snuck into a ukulele band. Note that this is NOT a bad thing, just different, and perhaps not what you're looking-for.

The wife is learning "normal" uke strumming on a cheap concert uke (if she gets much better there's gonna have to be an upgrade), so I finger pick the "lead" and she "plays rythym" and "sings". Sounds pretty good for a couple of crazy oldsters.

Very highly recommended for guitar folks, especially for finger-picking with Low G tuning.

I also highly recommend the Aquila Red Low G string (red Nylgut filled with copper powder) IF you can very carefully follow the installation instructions. MANY web reviewers HATE the Red Aquilas, as they'll quickly break if handled wrong.

When first tuning-up, DO NOT drag the Reds over the nut, but instead lift and stretch the string, cinch-up the tuner by say half-a-turn, then place it back down in the nut groove. The Reds apparently DO NOT LIKE being dragged over the nut groove, especially a sharp or poorly radiused one.

My guess is that ANY little cut in a Red will kill it, undoubtedly because there's so much copper filler in the string; we're walking a thin line, here people.

After the Red has stretched-out, small adjustments with the tuner appear to be OK, but I'd be careful. The feel and tone of the Reds is worth the extra trouble, I think.

Unlike a wire-wound Low G, the Reds sound just like the rest of the Nylgut strings, plus they have a "meaty", slightly rough surface texture that I really like. I'm thinking about a complete set of Reds just to get that texture on all the strings.

At the normal price, this is a really good uke, especially for a transitioning guitar player. At (can't say the price) it is a STEAL. If I see that sale price again, I might just buy ANOTHER ONE to keep in the office in case a Luau breaks-out.

Comments about Lanikai S-T Solid Spruce Series Tenor Ukulele:

This is my favorite of the 3 ukuleles I've owned. Tenor size is great, fits perfectly in my tenor Musician's Gear case. Spruce top and mahogany sides make the instrument sound less traditional/Hawaiian and more like a guitar. Real fun to play. Loudest Uke I've played yet. I'll just lower the action a little bit and it will be perfect!
            Thank you Lanikai!
