I'm a guitar & bass player.. I thought playing the UKE would be fun & I know they are becoming popular again, so time to add it to the repetoire. I played a number of models & purchased the Oscar Schmidt OU3. The UKE is well made & nicely finished. It plays well but I suggest tossing the strings it comes with for something nicer like Martin strings. The sound comes alive with the "crystal clear" style. Also, the Oscar Schmidt gig bag is a bargain, really nice. I suggest purchasing the Hal Leonard UKE chord book as the chordage is a mystery from what a guitar player is used to. Aloha ya'll.

The Oscar Schmidt OU3 is a beautiful instrument in a showy way. It looks good and will create an impression. But after it's appearance, everything else is a bit of a disapointment. It's playability falls short of less expensive ukes, with tone that is far short of mellow. The nut was poorly cut on my instrument, thus there was an unpleasant buzz that could only be solved by replacing and recutting the nut. The action was too high for comfort, and there were some intonation problems. A playable instrument, but not by that much. Looks ain't everything.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

My Ukulele, according to the SN was built in 2012. It has closed tuners and sounds amazing! The workman ship is flawless. I am new to Ukuleles and nylon strings so I found the information on Musicians Friend sight and other comments very helpful. This ukulele stays within one tweak or two of tune after being stored in my Oscar Schmidt hard case. Then it stays in tune while playing. Couldn't ask for more. It looks like my other two Washburn A/E guitars. I have a happy family! PS The wood color on the neck is different color than the back and sides (more of a reddish brown).

Improperly Strung, out of the box

        By (L)SD

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

I'm a newbie to Uke's. Overall tone is good EXCEPT it won't hold a tune. Maybe the nylon strings need a while to stretch out? Out of the box, the C string was only wrapped around the peg two wraps and cut off short, so it kept slipping. I attempted to put on a new string, but it's a lot trickier than a guitar - Uke strings have no "ball end" and are tied in a wierd loop/knot around the bridge. I wish the Oscar Schmidt factory had a little better quality control, then I would have given it a 5 in overall value.

        Nice Starter!

        By TedBearz

        from Iowa

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

I'm quite impressed by my new Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele. It is certainly very pretty, with only one very small blemish (near the nut on the underside of the neck, where it can't be seen). And while I'm not an expert on how a uke should sound, I've seen and heard plenty of 'em, and the OU3 sounds just fine to me - certainly good enough for a "starter" uke. It's not a "top quality" ukulele, but it's not a cheap toy either. I expect to be using this little gem for a long time to come, and can recommend it as a fine first uke.

        very lovely uke

        By Brudah John

        from Pensylvania

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

I have had this ukulele for about six months now and it has served me well. I'm left handed so I had to restring it before I could play the thing, which I had no trouble doing. However after I restrung it the A string snapped in half almost immediately. It wasn't a big deal though; I got some better strings (I recomend HiLo brand strings) and I haven't had a problem since. The sounds is wonderful, and it stays in tune for atleast 2 weeks. It is a very appealing instrument. People are always comming up to me and inquiring about it. It is very portable and great at parties.

Tons of fun in a small package.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

The Oscar Schmidt OU2 is a great escape for guitarists, and great fun for anyone looking to learn to play. The OU2's concert size offers an easier playing fretboard for those used to guitar, or those with adult sized hands when compared to the standard soprano sized. The OU2's sound is crisp but warm with good accoustic volume for such a small package.Over all, this is a great instrument at an exceptional price, infinite fun for any musician whether a long-time pro or a beginner (heck, even my 2 1/2 year old son loves to play it, but remember although this is a small and delicate instrument at a low price, this is NOT A TOY, it is the real thing!), great for all kinds of musical experimentation.

        Laminated Cedar Top

        By Gareth

        from Ohio

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU3 Concert Ukulele:

My only complaint with this is I felt a bit misled by "spruce top". It may well be spruce, but I didn't expect it to be plywood, oh excuse me I mean "laminated". My naivete I guess. Apart from that: I got two of these for wife and self about a month ago and we like 'em. They both needed the same action tweaking (nut & bridge). I'm a guitar player from way back and this is my first uke (apart from an old taro-patch) and I am having a lot of fun with it! They sound good enough to me and although the intonation isn't perfect it's way better than any of the low-cost junk ukes I've seen. Pretty too, with the inlays! Oh - I didn't like the rough strings they came with either but that's par for the course. HTH
