I bought this guitar as a backup for my Martin JC-16GTE and so far, it is good enough to use as my #1 guitar. It has a great warm tone due to it's dreadnought shape and rosewood back but still has enough brilliance for the high end to cut through. The guitar would have more warmth if the sides were solid rosewood but that would also raise the price closer to $1000.The electronics are not as straight forward as the Martin's Fishman Premium Blend but the features are very comparable. I bought the additional condenser mic to have it function like my Martin and it improved the sound a lot by giving the pluggeed in tone more bottom and natural sound. Downfall is that it can causes a lot of feedback and it can pick up your voice if you're singing out. The guitar has a great feel, looks great, the neck is comfortable, and the body rests well sitting or standing (this will vary depending on your size and how high/low you hold your instrument)Overall, this is a great instrument. For under $1000, this guitar is a great buy with high end tone and features.

    Exceptional Value...

    By IndyBoy

This is a GREAT guitar for the price point. I played it against a Martin DC Aura and it came very close. Great look, feel, electronics, fit and finish. I own two high end Martins and this is the one I always end up playing. At first I was confused. My PD85SCAV didn't look exactly like the pics I had seen. After investigating a learned these are now made in China. The first models were Korean. (The country of origin is listed on the paper label inside the sound hole.) I ended up playing a China made side by side with a Korean made. Hands down the China was clearly a better instrument. It has more sustain, tonal color, balance and weight. It made the Korean model seem a bit toyish. The antique violin satin finish is also a bit darker and more "relic"ed. I gave it a 4.5 on quality because the sides are rosewood laminate. (Solid top and back)It rings, it sings, it brings and it blings. GREAT dread cutaway!

    It's Awesome!!!

This guitar is a killer of a deal! I bought this guitar used for 100 dollars. I look it over and was not modified in anyway. I lowered the action and put 13's on it and it is great. I will put a bone saddle in soon to improve the sound even more. The tone is great. It has a great balanced tone. The neeck will play very quickly. Not to mention it looks great.

Way better than a low end Martin.

    By Nyx

I totally disagree with the last reviewer. I was thinking about going with a Martin DX1, and decided to get this one and am SOOO glad that I did. Not only is it a beautiful guitar, with a great pre-amp, but it sounds beautiful. I got this guitar to record my album and it made all the difference. The recording engineer said that he thought it sounded like a vintage Martin. Now this is my main guitar and I love it.

    Great Guitar

    By LPstandard

    Ask me a question

I was in the market to upgrade from a $200 Alvarez I've had for years. I looked at the 300 series Taylors, Martins, Guild and Breedlove before ordering the Alvarez PD85SCAV. I wasn't sure what to expect but knew I hadn't found the match I was looking. It turned out, this was it. It has the tone, feel, playability, looks and price that makes it a great guitar.

    Should have gotten another MARTIN

    By LOVE2PLAYGUITAR

    from HEMINGWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA

I wasnt too happy with the ALVAREZ PD85scav. The guitar is beautiful, but just doesnt play or sound that great in my opinion. I had a MARTIN DX1 I sold to get this, BIG MISTAKE!! The MARTIN sounded better, chorded 10 times better and the action on the MARTIN was 10 times better!! I'm selling my ALvarez PD85scav and getting another MARTIN DCX1KE, Hands down MARTIN IS THE WAY TOO GO!!

Returned my Taylor & Bought This

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

I was torn between this a a Taylor 214e. I already own an Alvarez PJ85 12 string and absolutly love it. So I bought the Taylor, deciding to go for somthing different. I returned it one week later. Don't get me wrong I love Taylors, but the 214e had a laminate body and no scallop bracing. It played great and sounded good in a small room, but plugged into my pod and played in a 500 seat aduitorium it lacked projection and had constant feedback issues. After having the action lowered on the PD85 I find it to be every bit as playable as the Taylor 214e I returned. The tone is much deeper and fuller and the electronics are superb. I have never had a problem with this or my PJ85. I love both these Alvarez guitars. You'll spend about the same buying this as you will the Taylor 214e, you may not get the made in the USA Taylor name, but you will get a quality solid top & back, great sounging guitar with a finished look that not many can compare to.

    Friggin' Ridiculous!

    By umptybump

    from new orleans

This guitar is a piece of fine art. The craftsmanship, the tone, the electronics are all incredible. There is no reason to pay for a Martin or Taylor when this axe is around! The action is low but could use a little work. PLenty of sustain. Just and incredible instrument. I love it. Go buy one.
