I played the Acoustic big rigs back in the early 70's. This little amp is true to that quality and ease of use. The wedge shape is very handy and well built with the port along the bottom. I play a Fender Precission with nylon wound strings. Although this amp is really designed for acoustic electric bass it still sounds nice and clean with the tone properly dialed in. Read the directions. My bass has a pre-amp (with no adjustment) and that required me to use a lot less LOW tone than I usually use but the amp sounds smooth, clean, and well balanced. I play mostly bluegrass gospel and some southern gospel. If you work with a larger group or with a drummer this may not be enough power but it is top quality and a very nice sound. The wedge shape makes it stightly awkward to carry but the thick soft rubber carry strap helps a lot. I can't wait to try some truly acoustic instruments in this amp.

If you are considering an Acoustic AB50 bass amp, I would suggest a "Pass" on this one. I bought one with teh intent of using it for acoustic/electric bass in small venues. It is a very nice looking unit with basic features, but has two serious design flaws. First, the amp section is open internally to the speaker compartment, so jets of air woofle in and out of all the jacks and even the pots, causing substantial noise that sounds like something rattling/buzzing inside, or the speaker farting out. VERY IRRITATING. If you fold up a towel and cover the control panel, it muffles the noise and the unit actually sounds pretty good. If you only plan on playing in loud backgrounds, may not be a problem. But since it is meant for acoustic/electric bass, not so much. The second problem is that the speaker baffle board (3/4" MDF) is supported on only 3 sides, so it vibrates like crazy and accentuates the buzz problem. A handy person could probably fix the second problem with some internal bracing; the first would be much harder. I checked one other and it did the same. Since it is a design issue, I suspect they will ALL do it. Very disappointing; I returned mine and will get something else.

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

I bought this to use while practicing bass. It is a fantastic little amp. What the specs don't point out is that there is a quarter inch line out that you can use for easy recording. The two XLR / quarter inch combo inputs make it very versatile and I've used it for many things from keyboards, basses, and more. I'm never selling this guy.

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

Bought this for my 10 year old daughter's first bass amp. I wish it had been my first amp! Power is substantial for a small combo- I can hear every note she plays clearly even when I'm 2 floors away in our house. And that's only at 9 o'clock on the volume. Tone is very good and controls are simple. It's the perfect teacher/student amp because there are 2 inputs with individual volume controls (the tone controls overall sound). I don't think this would have the power for a full band rehearsal with drums, but it will easily take her through the next several years of learning electric bass. Having a 10 inch speaker gives it a huge tone advantage over other small bass amps with 6 or 8 inch speakers. Power cord is detachable which is always a plus.

    Just played this tonight

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

I played this tonight instead of my own rig, because I was letting someone else borrow mine. (I play a 100W SWR Workingman with 2x10's). This amp sounded great. I got a fat bass tone that was very close in quality to my own rig. The AB50 was plenty loud enough - even with a solid drummer. We were also running the vocals through at the same time. We did get a little feedback, but the mic placement wasn't ideal. It's amazing how useful this little amp is. Big time, clean sound all the way around.I also play lead guitar, and one of my amp's is the Vox ACTV4 (4W, 1x10, tube). Awesome little amp w/PERFECT rock tone. I can't wait to get the two going in the same room. The smallest arena rock concert you'll ever see!

    AB50 works for small venues

    By bassdog-RveXh

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

The first AB50 I got had a slight rattle on my B and E strings, so I had to get a replacement. I used it on a gig last week with my Michael Kelly 5-string. I use La Bella nylon tape-wound strings, and the tone was very sweet. It has plenty of punch for the little club we played at. The guitar player was even impressed. It's really easy for this old dude to carry around and set up and play. Great for small venues only, unless you're running it through the board. No flashy features, but for the price, it's just fine.

    Cons

      • Two Bass Players

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

50 Watts at this price is Unbelievable. Two Channels is a Big Plus. I have owned and played two different Fender Bass Amps with two inputs but neither had separate volume controls for the two channels. This Acoustic has the best I have ever seen. XLR and 1/4 in the same plug... WOW!!! The sound is smooth with little to no buzz... At half volume the amp does the job for small venues. We use two bass players in our group and they can switch back and forth without changing cables and also be set at different levels for different instruments. I can't say enough about this amp. It really has great tone for Acoustic Electric Bass but it does great for regular bass guitars as well. You can use it for Piano and sing through it as well. I love the monitor shape and it is perfect to play right in your face as a monitor to plug into your sound system. Big thumbs up Acoustic and MusiciansFriend!!!

      excellent little bass amp

Comments about AB50 Acoustic Bass Combo Amplifier:

I'm actually a guitar player, but I just purchased a sweet Squier Vintage Modified P-Bass. I love playing bass and writing basslines to the new riffs that I create on guitar, so I needed a reliable amp to assist me and also something my bass player could use when he jams at my house. I had seen this pop up in a magazine a few months ago and finally saw the 2 models they offered from Acoustic. supposedly this brand was quite the deal back in the day, and I really can see why. obviously they aren't vintage, but this is a 50 watt amp that you can actually CRANK and get no distortion. It's such a clean amp. I didn't even realize it was meant for "acoustic-electric" basses specifically, but trust me, it does just find with electric. It also has a great bass port that is cut into the bottom to deliver some serious low end. I love playing this amp and the build quality is really nice. It's also got the Speakon inputs so you can actually use the amp with a mic and bass or just use it as a 50 watt PA. the versatility really made me want it, but please do yourself a favor and check out the tone! It's very smooth and defined and the kickback design makes sure you hear all it's goodness. I play with a Marshall tube stack and although I don't crank it, this amp can still hang in the mix with it. Great little amp, complete with the cool blue jewel light

I did a very favorable review when I first got my AB50 in 2008. I an now using the amp with an acoustic electric bass with nylon coated strings to play bluegrass gospel. It is without question a great, smooth, dependable amp with a sweet tone. At the price you can't beat it.
