I compared this to an Ibanez TS808ri,BB preamp through a Twin Reverb and Les Paul classic. Let me tell you this is the real deal Tubescreamer. It sounds exactly like the TS808 and goes a step further with a boost and a brown setting too. Not advertised, it comes with two op amps to alter the tone further. Using the BB with the Akai complement each other when using them together. This is a great pedal that sounds like a high end pedal.

I was kind of dissapointed by this pedal. Its very picky when it comes to what 9v adapters it likes to use, pretty much forcing me to going the 9v-battery route, which I hate. The quality of the distortion and sound is so-so. Ive heard much better, and I guess Ive heard worse. If youre going to pick up an akai drive 3 pedal, get the Overdrive not the distortion. This pedal does what its supposed to, just not really as well as Id hoped. If you can find a good deal on it though, I would probably pick it up (just make sure you get a power adapter that works!)

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Grabbed the Akai Pro Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode O.D. pedal because it was the Stupid Deal Of The Day...and I'm thanking the gods of Gear Aquisition Syndrome that I did! The chrome chassis is as solid as it is sexy, and its footprint is reasonable, if a little bigger than the average OD box. It comes with three chips, which can be easily swapped via a screw-on panel in the bottom of the pedal, for varying amounts of drive. The three way switch (warm, boost, and scream) offer many, many voices in conjunction with the level, drive and tone controls, all of which are clearly labeled, easy to dial in and do exactly what you'd expect them to.

It works great as a clean-ish boost and provides a ton of crystal clear gain, while the overdrive on tap is out of this world without being overbearing. The overall tone provided is very transparent and only colors your amp's sound if you want it to...it's also a true bypass pedal, so when it's off, it's REALLY off! When swapping between the three chips (provided), the top end reaches everywhere from classic bluesy grit to all out hard rock turbulence! This pedal is extremely touch and volume sensitive, and works like a dream through my '98 Hot Rod Deville 4x10...when using it to push the clean channel, it sounds great playing country and blues, while using it to push the dirty channel produces a killer rock and roll grind! It works equally well with single coils (Squire Tele w/stock p-ups) and humbuckers (Mockingbird ST, Duncan designed coil tapped h-buckers).

This is by far my favorite gear grab of the year. It's as versatile and sweet sounding as many boutique pedal I've tried, for less than most hand made designer pedals go for. If you need a solid, versatile overdrive to bring out the tube-esque nastiness of your amp, be it tube, solid state or anything in between, this is the one to get!

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Clear tone. It remembers the classic Tube Screamer TS-808 but a little more rocker and with more gain, however not so brilliant as the TS-9, it is also pretty versatile and easy to use. Additionally the toggle switch brings you great options, the boost it has is really good and the warm mode is really nice, it gives more balls to the tone... If you use it on that mode and with all the knobs at 5 o'clock you can feel that Kyuss-like sound.

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

it's a cool, unique overdrive with a lot of options. its best uses are fairly limited, but playing around with it a bit helps you find what it's best for in your setup. the guy who gave it two stars doesn't know what he's on about, the tube screamer is a different breed and adds more noise than this by far. this is a good subtle effect for my setup, throw it in your chain before a distortion or fuzz and it really makes your other pedals shine. got it as a 'stupid deal of the day', wouldn't have bought it otherwise, but it's an exceptional pedal for the price i paid. still would be decent if you paid full price, though there might be better options depending on what you're looking for at that price.

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

With all of the bells and whistles on this pedal, it is easy to dial in an OD tone that you're happy with. I haven't even tried the 2 additional chips it comes with.

I use it with a Super Champ X2 head and a Marshall JCM2000 head. Sounds good through both, but takes some dialing in, especially with the Marshall, as it can be a bit bright. Then again, perhaps the other chips will be more to my liking.

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Ok you want to get that classic ZZ top sound, but still need something more heavy? This is it. you can get that soft fuzz of an overdriven amp and the distortion to rip the paint off the walls at low volume. the only type of music it would not be good for is "Deathmetal". A lot of great control the standerd three knobs for level, tone, and drive, but it also has a tripl-throw toggle to change the tone. If that's not enough you also get two additional gain chips for custom tailoring of the drive. If this box got lost I would get the exact same kind. It's great.

Great value pedal for me as a SDOTD. Hits both subtle overdrive and heavier distortion quite well. If you need a single solid multipurpose overdrive pedal, this could be a winner for you.

Comments about Akai Professional Analog Custom Shop Drive3 Tri-Mode Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

It has the standard Level, Tone, and Drive controls plus a 3 position switch. Less noisy than my other overdrives. Does not get muddy when cranked. Comes with 2 extra opamps so it is kind of like 9 different overdrives. It is an overdrive pedal and does not go into heavy overdrive/distortion. It does what it is supposed to do and sounds good doing it.

Nice creamy Overdrive pedal, with a 3-way switch to tweak the sound a little. Compared it to the more compact OCD which I use to play out. Ran the Drive3 into my DRRI and it has nice smooth overdrive into the "brown sound" I want. Scream/boost is more subtle than the OCD. Excellent for Classic Rock/Bluesy leads.
