I normally play 2 or 3 SVT 2x15 cabs powered by SVT 3 Pro heads in a hard rock cover band, but when I got a call to fill in with a local '60's and classic rock group, I needed to find a small combo amp as my big monster rigs would be very out of place. So, I went looking for a combo and came across a Made in USA B-100R. For a solid state amp, I was blown away by the tone. The B-100R actually sounds and responds like a tube amp. In fact, I took the chassis cover off just to confirm it didn't have a tube in the preamp like the B-200R. Although it doesn't have quite the same magic of the B-15R all tube Portaflex, it does has a thick and very warm tone. It's ported on the back and this really helps produce a woody and full round sound. For the money, this was a real bargain. I was fearful that being only 100 solid state watts wouldnt be powerful enough, but I had no problem hearing myself onstage. There was with no distortion, and the speaker never bottomed out or "farted". The soundman even admitted he was skeptical it would keep up, but we micd it and he said it sounded perfect out front. I played the night with a Gibson Thunderbird with DR Black Beaties and a '62 Fender P-bass with La Bella Flatwounds, and the B-100 far exceeded my expectations! If you get the chance to buy one - do it! It was the best solid state combo I have ever played - hands down.

Dynamite combo!

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

This thing is flat-out cool! It honestly sounds better than my SVT. I am a 22 year pro and a sound engineer. Aside from the great tone and vintage vibe, this amp is dead-quiet, an engineers dream! This amp will appear on plenty-o-recordings, as well as low level gigs, and practices galore! I haven't had it long enough to comment on the durabilty or reliabilty, but I have other Ampeg's and have put them through years of abuse with no troubles. I love the Ampeg B-100R!

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I've been playing bass for 30+ years, long enough to have played an original B-15 Portaflex. Since then I've owned them all - Fender, SWR, Gallien-Krueger, Eden, Hartke, Peavey, EMC, Sunn - always looking for the perfect combination of sound, size, and power. I've never written a product review until now. The Ampeg B-100R is the best amp I have ever owned. Period.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

Unfortunately I received a "lemon" with defective circuitry. I doubt the speaker was bad as this was purchased new (not from M.F.). The amp would start farting and become distorted even at low volumes. Just imagine a unwanted overdrive sound that you can't turn off. Another thing I did not like was that it didn't have an external speaker jack to connect an extension cab. BTW, the caster's should come with the amp and not be an accessory for an added cost. Solid made bass amp for the price. I did like the control features and the blue diamond covering. If this wasn't defective, I'm sure the Ampeg Rocketbass amp has good sound, but I'm not going to buy an Ampeg again just for the poor quality control and aggravation it caused me.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I've been using this amp for 4 year and by far is the best combo on the market. This amp is built like a tank and can handle most medium size club. I gig 4 - 5 times a month using this amp with no problems. If this amp was stolen it would be replaced in seconds.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I usually play through a Carvin 1000 watt for band practive at my guitarists house. But that Carvin doesn't even come close to the tone and sound (not to mention looks) of the Ampeg B100R. This actually sounds as if it has tubes in it. And amps made by other companies THAT ACTUALLY USE TUBES don't come close to the tone you can get with this amp. I've play at outdoor shows and small venues with this and have totally overpowered the guitar. And even when you turn it up to 11, you don't get any distortion at all. An all around great amp.

best collection of good quilities

By Lowdown-XfAfx

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

This amp is truely one of the best collections of the most desirable features on the market. The tones are great and easy to achieve with simple controls. Power is enough, especially with D.I. to the P.A. Portability is tailer-to-first-note ready in minutes. I too, have played them all, from the TNT's to big ego stacks and I am more pleased with this amp than with any of the other rigs. My first amp in '67 was a B15-N. I took a little detour for a while but I am back home now.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I have played professionally for 30 years and I have never owned an amp that is so satisfying to play through. It outplays stacks of expensive gear and looks cool doing it. I have used it on all sizes of stages and outdoor festivals and it has always surprised me and everyone who sees and hears me use it. Not a "toy" or "practice amp" by any stretch. I LOVE IT!!!

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I bought this amp used, but boy, does it have a beutiful tone. The sound is very adjustable with the four-level controls - a 9 on features. I've not had it more than a few months, but as I bought it used it has withstood the test of time and milage really well - Quality is a 10. I've looked into the prices online and think that this is a great value - a 9. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this bass amp - a 10.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

This is the best sounding amp. It accually sounds like its powered by tubes. Much louder than 100 watts. It sounds more like a 175 or 200 watt. If playing in a band this will out power any guitar amp that is 100 watts. Buy this especially for the money.

AMAZING AMP!

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

My dad played bass when he was younger and now im taking over. I used to play on his 150W musicman stack, which is an awesome amp and sounds awesome with my musicman bass, but this ampeg, I truthfully like better. I put them side by side to see which would have better sound, tone, and which one was more loud, and the ampeg won. Awesome amp for anyone and any type of music! Now stop reading this and go buy it!

The Best 100-Watt Bass Combo Amplifier

By JoMagic

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

The Ampeg B-100R is the best 100-watt bass combo amp on the market... and I've compared it with the Trace Elliot Commando 15, SWR Workmans 15, Fender Rumble 100, Crate BX100, Ampeg BA-115, and Behringer BX600. In my opinion the Ampeg B-100R sounds the best over all the other bass combo's I've used.

Comments about Ampeg B-100R Bass Combo Amp:

I used one of these for years. All-in-all a great combo, that looks cool. The drawback is that it's not very versatile. It works pretty well for clean sound if you're doing rock or blues type sound, and can get pretty dirty for punk use; especially with a RIC 4003. I recomend this as a great budget combo, but if you're looking for Ampeg tube sound, or a do-it-all tone machine, look elsewhere. Also, this isn't a stack, so it's really only good for small shows and practice. I also recomend getting an ampstand for it or you'll never hear youself over guitarists with halfstacks.
