It's the poor man's version of the SVT-4 Pro and a very impressive amp in its own right.

I've had my B4 for quite some time now and i have not even looked to find something to replace. I have no reason to. Its powerful sound and tone is ireplaceable and will destroy almost any competition it has. I believe that most of its competetion may come from other heads of the ampeg family. I think it battles strongly with the tubed svt 4 pro. Even though the b4 is not tubed its clarity and house-rumbling sound is just like a tubed amp and can blow you away. I am playing it with an 8x10 ampeg cab with a C-304 Esp bass.. (soon looking to expand to fender deluxe p) Head weighs a good 45lbs and i strongly recommend putting it in a rack-mount case with a korg rackmount tuner. It is worth every penny and deserves all the care it can get. You wanna rumble everything around you... this is the head to do it.

    Big power, weak sound

REALLY flat tone. Thought I'd have some flexability with the 9-band EQ, but sound was without warmth or texture. Played with Fender Jazz and a 15" cabinet.

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

Best amp ampeg ever built. I have now owned mine for about 12 or 13 years. It is a 1999 model and it just keeps going. No tubes to buy. Have had it cleaned to get some of the dust out from the fan. no problems all the years later and hundreds of shows and hours on both of the b4's that i own.

Good Workhorse - a little dry

    By kongoscience

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

Have gigged extensively with this amp for the past 4 years. Bought this amp as I was playing Reggae/ Dub and needed a lot of wattage to push massive low end. I have experimented with a handful of cabs/ speaker configurations. Ampeg 410HLF, Acme low B2 Carvin redline 410 /redline 18" sub stack. Seems to never run out of power to push anything. Note: in many instances amp will will sound best when mono bridged. Only complaint is that when I switched styles and wanted more tone /color out of amp I was a little disappointed in how flat / dry it sounds. I have played active basses through this amp which helps shape the tone a little however a nice external tube preamp used in combination is ideal. The tube emulation circuit on the ampeg doesn't do much - dirties up the sound but thats about it.

    Not to shabby

I've had this machine for months now and its surprised me alot! The 5 different settings and EQ deal a great factor to my sound I'm looking for and has expanded me sound just a bit more. The only thing to this bad boy is it would be best to be pushed through a 610 or 810. The B4R is the top head in the B-series for Ampeg so if your looking to invest on an amzing amp gets this puppy. Its worth it!

    ampeg still the best

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

Ampeg has always been the best when it comes to bass amps but this monster here can really make you sound like a professional. Not only do you get a huge amount of power to use the EQ on it is probably one of the most sensitive I have touched, a tiny adjustment makes a huge change. The price is perfect for this amp and you?ll understand why once you have played on it, Ampeg is still the best without a doubt

    Nothing Better!

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

I've been playing this rig for over a year and it hasn't let me down. Previously I was playing a GK head, which decided to eat itself. After spending the cash for the B4R I haven't looked back. So much versatility, so much power, so much sound. I'm not looking for another amp any time soon. If you have the cash, you best be buying this.

    Great Head

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

I have been a bassist for about 5 years now and decided to go amp shopping after we jammed out one night, and my small Peavy 115 couldn't hold up to my buddy's JCM 2000 Half Stack. I found the B-4R and decided that it was the right one for me. It has great range, power, and tone, which I was looking for in an amp. I play it through Ampeg's Classic 6x10 ( I didnt have enough fot the 8x10) and I am very pleased with my selection.

    Fantastic Amp

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

I have had this amp for over 5 years, and have never even looked for another! I have previously owned Peavey, Fender, SWR, and Hartke, This amp blows all of them away!! Plenty of power, great tone control, HUGE bottom end. I play this amp through a custom made JBL and Eminence loaded cab( 15" JBL & 2-10" Eminence). My Fender P-bass never sounded better. I can very strongly recomend this amp to ANYONE.

    Killer

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

I've played through this Amp for a year now. It was a gift from my uncle, who played it previously for four years. In all my time as a bassist, the only competition I've found for this amp is the SVT 4, and even then it's neck and neck. The right amount of power, thump, and all out roar you can get from this amp is absolutely amazing. I strongly reccomend this to any bassist out there looking to stun the crowd with power.

    Glorious

    By tmmwt2

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

I have had this head for 6 years and have put it through more than any piece of equipment deserves and it is still running and sounding great. The sounds one can draw from this amp can fit any situation needed. The lone draw back is that the B4R doesn't have quite the warm sound of a tubed amp. Don't let that stop you though especially if you are in a rock or metal band, it generates a glorious deep end roar. If you have the money, I would go with SVT-4 Pro, but the B4R isn't a bad amp at all. It will blow away the competition from almost any other company.

Comments about Ampeg B-4R Solid State Amp Head:

Very powerful... nice tones... and a decent amount of things you can play around with for your own personal bass sound. i like the tuner output, i thought it was necessary because your bass should always be in tune for this amp. and since its 45lbs, maybe putting the head in a rack isn't a bad idea... and in the future i hope to add a rackmount tuner and other things to fill up a rack... thanks
