I have owned and sold every bass head on the market in the last 3 years from the most expensive "boutique" amps to "bargin" heads trying to find an amp that sounds good in all medium club type rooms. I wanted a punchy, yet clear tone that would help me stay ahead of a screaming blues guitar player, a super driving funky drummer and a hammond player with a 900 Leslie. This head has very simple staight forward features which makes it easy to find the sound your looking for quickly. For this gig (blues, classic rock, old scool R&B) using various Fender passive basses, I usually push the low mids around 300hrz and scoop out 1000 hrz, but because of the wide tonal range of this head you can set it up for whatever your musical style or bass. When I used this head out on a gig for the first time and settled into it right away. The tone cut through the stage mix and never lost its edge, even after my ears started to get a little tired. For the first time in a long time I found that I didn't need to overplay to compensate for my inability to hear what I was doing. This newer version of the B2 with the 450 watt amp drove my two 8 ohm cabinets (12" & 15") at 4 ohms with all the punch and clarity that I wanted. I feel that for my situation, I have finally found a head I can gig with and really be happy with knowing that I haven't invested lots of money. The only thing I would want added to this unit is tuner out with a mute switch and a footwitch out to control the EQ and the tuner mute like the SVP III or other top end Ampegs. But this unit has the important basics for a great price.

I bought this head and it sounded great! ... for about 30 seconds. Then it started cutting out and distorting really bad. I had it replaced and had the same exact problem AGAIN! I am not the only person this has happened to. I have since found multiple websites where people are having the same issue. And Ampeg ignores it! Even on the Ampeg forums... the problem is always blamed on the bass, cables and cabinet. I can assure you that my equipment is top-notch and works great with any other bass head. Ampeg, I'm dissapointed.

2 have failed on me as well

By John Prevost

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

I had to return my first one in 2008 and tonight my second has fizzled out with the exact same symptoms. It distorts and goes in and out after a short time playing. Power it off and it goes away. Then comes back after another 15 minutes of play. So frustrating. I of Apeg as great quality and this is what you get. Unimpressive and very frustrating.

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

You really can't get 450W out of anyother Ampeg product for this price. Quality leaves a little to be desired unfortunatly. I happened to kill some of the solder on the inside power connection from playing to long. Besides the drive to the repair shop, no cost what so ever since there is an Ampeg warranty on this. If you play with effects (overdrive, bootsy wah, goofy stuff) it'll sound a little grainy when you turn off your effects.

Two have failed on me

By DickyRich

from Atlanta

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

Picked the first one up on 4/1/08 at SamAsh only to be replaced with the floor sample 6 months later. Now its 10/3/09 and the floor sample has the same failure. After playing for 10-15 min the unit starts to distort badly and I am unable to continue playing. Unit has to be turned off to restore its proper tone. Very disappointed to say the least.

Good Amp

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

Good amp. I match mine up with an SVT 4x10. Perfect match. I play this amp hard for the last 4 years without a problem. Practice, Rehearsals or gigs. It has never failed me. Volume and Tone remain consistant. Do not run any enclosure or combination of speakers that will reduce your impedence below 4 ohms. I have seen people try to push a 4 ohm 4x10 with an 8 ohm 1x15. You will damage the head and/or the speakers.

Tone Overload

By G-Man-HBJjs

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

It would be hard to find another head that has this much tone control on it. If you can't find the right tone with this head you ain't gonna find it at all. You can't beat the price for the power you get from this head. I threw a Furman power conditioner on it and play it on a SVT-410HLF cab. Awesome combo. The HLF cab seems to give it a little more warmth and bottom end you would miss not having a tube preamp. Bottom line..all the tone you need.

Move away from this head

By BassMan Glenn

from pleasanton, CA

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

I bought this head with a 4x10 Ampeg cab. First gig, the thing would power off during a song. I had to turn off the power, then back on to get another couple of notes, then it would power off again. I ended up using my di box, and going through the main's. Very frustrating. I took it back and got another one, only to have the same exact thing happen. Different venu, different power strip. Some said it was the cab, but I've since purchased a Markbass head and no problems any more, my band is very happy now.

Comments about Ampeg B2RE Rack Bass Head:

You can really get about any sound you want out of this amp. I don't feel that I need a pre-amp with this because I can get the sound I want out of it, or any sound as a matter of fact. It puts out a good amount of power with that great ampeg sound. Very happy with it and I would recommend it to anyone.
