I am a professional bassist in the D.C. area, and was breaking my back using 4x10 ampeg and SWR Cabs for Gospel shows, jazz gigs, clubs, etc.... I was looking at lightweight and loud 2x12's like the Eden when i came across the PB212. Originally i was for the 2x10, but when i tried em both next to eachother, I liked how the 2x12 supported my low B string better. I play Upright and a 6 string ZON through a GK 800RB and this cab me the volume, tone, and portability I need. Oh yeah, not to mention its ultra easy to carry up to my Third floor apartment!!!
This cab is good for stand up bass, light jazz or possibly blues where various tones and quality of sound rather than volumn is desired. I had to replace the speakers when the ceramic drivers burned in the middle of a rock and roll set.
It sounded OK right up until it died in the middle of a set. Had to ship it back to Ampeg for warranty service, which left me without a cab for months. A lot of money for about 20 hours worth of sound.
I was looking for a portable cab to go with my GK 800RB amp. I couldn't resist the 38 pound feature of this cab. I figured that I couldn't go wrong with a high priced Ampeg box. When the cabinet arrived I quickly hooked it up and started playing...I was shocked...the sound was extremely thin and soft. I had my amp on a higher volume setting than I have ever used on a gig and the cabined still sounded weak and thin. I unplugged the Ampeg and plugged into a Bag End 1-12 cabinet without changing any of the settings. The Bag End with a single 12 was easily twice as loud and had way more bottom. I sent the 212pb back immediately even though I had to pay the shipping.
I've had this cab for a while. If you don't have to play loud it's seems fine, the tone is average. At higher levels it does not hold the bottom too well. Farts out and if you push it, it will heat up and burn. Strange for the wattage rating. I really wanted this to be a good product,35lbs a pull up handle and wheels, sweet. Back to the drawing board.
Despite the pricey cabinet, Ampegs 212h cabinet dominates big sound for a lightweight. It is a luxury piece for all bass players.
I am a professional musician. I perform and record in a variety of situations and genres, though most of my bread and butter results from club dates and small college tours. In either situation, I am usually responsible for loading my gear; hence my interest in the PortaBass cab. This is particularly appreciated when I am trying to maneuver through a crowd. I compared the PB-212H and PB-210H. Considering I do play a 5 string bass, the PB-212H had more depth. For years, I have used hi-fi non-resonant (birch) 2x10 cabs with ports. I was little skeptical of the light weight resonant (poplar) design. I thought the PB-212H properties would make for a slow unfocused sound. Ironically, the resonant properties I feared made the cab clearer when heard off-axis (the drummer commented it was easier to hear me) at the same time the sealed structure kept things tight and punchy (more even response-from the G down to the B string). There always seems to be a sonic compromise when you deal with portable gear. Within reason, the Ampeg PB-212H is an exception that is well worth the cost.
I've been using the PB212H cabinet for about 2 months now and I'm very satisfied with its tone and sound. The telescopic handle and the 38lb weight ARE definetly a huge plus !! The 12's give me the speed of a 10 and the lows of a 15 in one small, ultra light, portable cabinet that handles 400 watts RMS and 600 watts max.
This amp has given me nothing but trouble. I know 3 other bassist who have used this amp and all three had the amo blow up and catch on fire. I do not like this amp at all. I wonder why they haven't recalled them all yet.
