I picked up one of these used in Sacramento in 1997 for 2-hunge. Best 2-hunge I ever spent!
As others have lauded, this amp is simply great and its range of tones and versatility is phenomenal.
I've recently added a Zoom G5 modeler to my stomps and I am shocked what using the clean tone of the amp yields with some of the vintage models... I actually think some models sound better than the originals through this amp!
- Was this a gift?:
i picked this amp up used a few years ago at a local music store for $300. it was a steal! This is definitely the best tube amp for the money. the clean channel is incredible and this amp is LOUD. They discontinued them so get one used while there still cheap!!!!!
I've had mine a few years now. It has performed perfectly since day one. I've never had it serviced or modified, and it sounds incredibly. Still using the original tubes. Perfect. The clean tone beats the Deluxe Reverb by miles. And there's no comparison when it comes to the reverb. The Ampeg reverb blows the Fender reverb away. I'm surprised we don't see more of these on stage. When I bought mine, it was priced about the same as the Deluxe Reverb. I A/B'd them when I was looking, and the Ampeg sounded so much better, the decision was easy. If you can find one of these used, buy it. You will not be disappointed.
I bought this amp in the early 90's before going on tour one year because I was afraid my 72 Twin wasn't going to last another tour. I planned on selling it when I got home to finance the restoration of my Twin. When I got back from tour I was in love with this amp. I used it for many years. It's everything I want in an amp. It's got vintage twang and a killer overdrive. It can do everything from country to rockabilly to punk to metal. Trust me, I've played it all with this amp.Unfortunately, my amp was stolen a few years ago. These amps were discontinued and I couldn't find one anywhere. I finally tracked one down recently and bought it. I'm stoked to be using this amp again. I still have that old Twin, but the R12R has become my gigging amp again.
I've owned my first one for about 12 years, (bought a 2X12 a couple years ago) The fact that they sell for more used than they did new should tell you something. I own about 7 amps the 1X12 is my main amp it does everything very reliable and durable, make sure it has the power tube harness when you buy it, this became standard during the late 90's but early 90's models didn't have them. Ampeg paid to have those retrofitted (my first one didn't have it my 2X12 did). They are a great comapny to work with. This amp gets more complimants than all my others combined. You get warm and crunchy or clean and smooth. The reverb is fantastic but make sure if you are using a foot switch it is stereo or it will disable the reverb. I know about 5 other guitar players that own these all of the feel the same or even more passionate then I am about it.
This amp sounds AMAZING. Don't worry about playing it first, it gives you excellent tube tone that is to die for. The one problem that I have had, is that the reverb did not work when the amp arrived. The plus is that ampeg's support is extraordinarily fast and helpful. I have regularly received email replies on weekends, and these were just questions regarding the amps features before I bought. Now, I have spoke with people on the phone, and they are exceedingly helpful. Back to the amp. the clean will make you smile, very big. It gets so loud it'll make shake the ground. No problems there. The dirty sounds wonderful, but I don't use it much. One last thing, it just looks vintage. The cover is beautiful. Please give this a shot, you will not regret it!
I have owned this amp for two years, and it is the best decision I have ever made in terms of equipment. It has awesome blues and jazz tone, and screams on the distortion channel.
I own it. Love the Rich Yet Deep & Warm Tones this Amp can produce. Power Packed Amp. Also own a 1965 Twin Reverb; the Ampeg R12R Stands tall up against my ventage Fender on Clean settings. You will not go wrong on this Bad Boy!
This amp delivers exactly what I need for cranking out that "on the money" blues tone and "hit you hard" classic rock overdrive. I put a set of casters on it to make it more mobile, and had a custom cover made to protect it. It is my favorite small gig amp.If it was stolen, I would replace it immediately.
This amp is awesome. Very flexible, can be used easily as a practice amp or for most gigs. Wonderful crisp tone when clean, and can be nasty when the gain is cranked up! Well worth the money!
