This preamp is incredible! I have been playing bass for over 18 yrs and have played all sorts of bass rigs and I always find myself coming back to Ampeg. The SVPCL coupled with a power amp and a good set of speakers will blow you away! You can get any sound that you are after. Great tube tone with ultimate punch and clarity. I can't live without it! Also keep in mind that the SVPCL, power amp, rack and compressor weighs half as much as the SVT Classic head and in my opinion, it sounds exactly the same. Great job Ampeg!!!
This is my second review of this unit. I had to do a follow up due to changes I made in my setup.I dropped the 2 1-15 cabinets and got more of the Peavey 412tvx cabinets. I am now using 6 of the beasts, and I mean that in the best way. I also added some power, a Peavey cs4000. So now with this Jewel of a preamp going into 6000watts and 24 12" speakers, the "ULTIMATE" Bass amp setup is really Ultimate!!! I am so happy with the SVPCL. It never misses a beat. I can get any sound I want, of course I do not like the overly bright solid state sound. That makes this the perfict pre-amp, for me. I am also using a digitech BP-200 effects proccessor. I can use the "dark" and "Bigbutt" settings with just a touch of peak light showing on the Ampeg, and get the biggest roundest low end ever heard. Makes my high end home system sound lacking lows. I have thrown this rig in my minivan and pulled it out for show after show. It keeps working great. After playing with it this long I have really found all the settings I want to use. Yes I like a big bottom, but there are times I crank the mids on my active Bass, set the BP-200 to bring out the punch, and let it rip. W-O-W! My lead guitarist says its enough punch to crack concrete. If I let the peak light be almost constant I get that vintage Fender Bassmen sound from the 60's. With enough volume to fill any size venue. (Even sounds great from 1/2 mile outside.)
A very nice piece of equipment. I own several amps and preamps including Eden, Alembic and Peavey. The Ampeg has the classic sound of the SVT without the weight. It is well-built with easy and intuitive tone-shaping. No bells and whistles. This preamp will go into distortion if the input from your pickups is powerful enough and can be controlled with the input gain control. This is a very useful feature because it allows you to vary the tone from completely clear to slight break-up to serious overdrive. My speakers have never sounded so good. It also has a lot of midrange punch that can be heard through 15-inch speakers.
Normally I wait a few months before I review a product, so I can really get to know it, and use it. Although there is really no reason to do that with this. It is exactly what I've been looking for. The tubes add so much to the sound, even with a solid state power amp. It even makes my old no-name bass sound good. It does have that Ampeg sound, so if that's what you want, you won't be disapointed. The only reason I gave it an 8 on features is because it is pretty standard, gain, eq, and volume. I think a built in compressor would add alot, but then it would be more than the SVT classic. Other than that, excellent product, and highly reccomended.
Tired of solid state amps or does your current combo lack. I use this to warm up my clean sound and jazz up my distortion. this baby packs 4 groove tubes and 5 differant sounds I like all of them have practal uses for musicians who like to be vesatile
I've been endorsed with Eden for many years now and have to say there is nothing like a good set of tubes for a preamp, Eden has 1, this ampeg plus many ampegs has many!
Tried others in the past. But I feel I've found the sound that I was looking for. This is it, the last preamp that I'll ever purchase.
I bought this preamp to get a different, warmer sound out of my SWR bass 750/ Goliath III set up. I thought the SVP CL was easy to use and straight forward, but it didn't seem to warm up my sound as much as I hoped for. In the end I returned it for a SVT III pro (which is the tone I was after in the first place.)
