I've owned at least 1 SVT-2 Pro since the early 90's depending on the gig at the time. This is pure bass tone, there is no other comparison. I've owned AMP (pre-SWR), Trace Elliot, SWR, Eden, GK, Aguilar, and Carvin along with other Ampeg's. I've played through just about everything else on the market at one time or another as well.Infinite tone shaping ability to meet any style, incredible tone, incredible volume and headroom. Only thing to be prepared for is the weight...it's heavy, but well worth the extra workout carrying it...or rolling it around in your rack.I've retubed them several times as well. I used to keep 1 with KT-88's for rockier gigs and 1 with 6550's for more jazz and fretless gigs and then on big volume gigs I bi-amped and sent 500Hz and lower to the KT-88's and the rest to the 6550's: could be super clean, or super gritty either way it was clear and loud! You cannot go wrong with an SVT-2 Pro.

After playing in bands for 21 years I can say that this is the best sounding amp I have ever plugged into. As long as you replace and bias the tubes every 400 hours the tone will rock. The amp is loud, but not as loud as a mesa boogie 400. The boogie will never compare to the tone of any SVT. I have owned and still own the following. Hartke 3500, SWR 350, Kruger 400rb, Sun 300, fender band master. Nothing compares in tone. If your looking to slap and tap; go solid state. If your looking to move mountains; buy an ampeg.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

I have an early 90's version with the 8x10 cabinet. I won't play anything else. I've used it for smaller gig to playing 10,000 seat festivals. The thump is unmatched. I have been in classic rock band to country bands to blues and also christian bands. This amp has delivered the exact sound I wanted for whatever show I play. In my area not many bass players can afford this, but it is well worth the money.

Worth the money

By Moosecongo

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

This amp packs all the punch, tone, and versatility into an all tube rackmountable system. This head was meant to play the big venue with two 810s. the sound and attack are all there and with the addition of a 9 band eq (as opposed to the classic without) this head makes every bassist for any style get that tone they need. Low end is what I like for my hardcore band tuning to B flat. I plugged in and shook the foundation of the store. The gain half up and the master on 2! Still keeping the tubes at a good temp and no tone was sacrificed at all! If you want power and tone check this out. The classic is this exact head with diffferent preamp tubes. (because of 9 band) AMAZING A+++ Don't fret the overseas move. Ampeg will still honor and hold their ground.

All you'll ever need

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

Tricky to learn the controls, especially if you play more than 1 bass. You can get so clear and precise it's almost like a guitar, or get nothing but rumble - but I usually go for somewhere in between! Speaker choice is important - and obvious, but I also get results with 15's.

Classic Ampeg Tone

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

I have a late 90's SVT II-pro. This is a great amp head, especially if you hook it up to an Ampeg Classic 8x10 Cab. It sounds a little muddy if the eq has too much bass dialed in. The 4.0 on features is because sometimes it is hard to find the 'right' tone. The 4.5 is because its expensive as S***...luckily mine is a hand-me-down.

Perfect in every way!

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

I have owned many bass amps over the years, and this one takes the cake! The only other amp that sounds as good to me (but nowhere near as loud) is my trusty Ampeg B15-R. This amp has the buttery smooth sound, all of the features I could want, and it's pure tube, with 300 watts of LOUD. I use this with my Aguilar Gs412 and it's the best rig I have ever had, hands down. Don't listen to the reviewers that don't think this amp is loud. I consider it every bit as loud as a Mesa Boogie 400+, but it sounds better. 300 tube watts is louder and better sounding than 1000 solid state watts too, keep that in mind if you don't understand why a 300 watt amp can be so expensive. It's worth every penny, the folks at Ampeg have done it right again. This amp will get HOT, but what do you expect with 6 6550 tubes that glow redhot. After a 3 hour gig, the fan runs quietly, and it's hot, but it actually sounds even better when it's hot. Try this amp for yourself, you won't be dissapointed. Just get a good Rack case for it, and be prepared to lift a heavy case, cause it AINT LIGHT.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

If your new to bass you might want to look elsewhere for your amp. The controls are very comprehensive, meaning you can get any sound you want. Especially with a normal channle and an EQ channel letting you switch between sounds. I've owned lots of amps, even other Ampeg's, this takes the cake. Be aware that with all the tubes ( when you need to re-tube it's not going to be light on the wallet. Also, at 90 pounds, even more once in a rack, you will need help to move it around. Just look at all the pro's gear. It will always be a SVT-Classic or this amp. I've owned both, this is the way to go if you want lots of that amazing SVT tube growl.

Great features and sound, poor build quality

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

I've owned my SVT II Pro for 18 months now and I've had it serviced on 6 occaisions during that time. I've had to have the whole power amp revalved and the bais circuit replaced after the head blew up on me during a soundcheck. It's a great sounding amp with all the features I need and I do love it, I just wish it was more reliable. If anybody asked my opinion, I'd tell them to seek out an old SVT II head instead; slightly less features but 100% more reliable.

Awesome tone!!! Weighs a ton!!!

Comments about Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head:

This has been my main bass head for 10 years. I think that with this head you can dial in just about any tone you need or want. It has a tendency to blow tubes, so I bought another one for use as back-up. After playing through the SVT2pro, i am unwilling to use anything else.
