OVERVIEW

A totally modern, hybrid version of the famous SVT.

The tube preamp section of the Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head re-creates the great bass tone that made the original SVT the most respected bass amp of all time. The power section is solid state with a toroidal transformer that generates less noise and magnetic interference. Delivers 450W @ 4 ohms and has an arsenal of tone-shaping tools: 3 bands of tone, a 5-position mid selector, 9-band graphic EQ, plus low and high boosts. Other pro features include input peak LED, input pad and bright switch, mute function, tuner out, variable line-out level, time-delayed turn on, DC-supplied filaments, and variable fan speed. 2U rackmount.

I don't understand why some of these reviews claim there is not enough power from this amp. I have been playing mine for seven years now and play nothing else. I have played venues from small rooms to outdoor festivals and have never had a heating/failure issue. I play it through an Ampeg 8x10 classic, and it rumbles. I do not know why anyone would need more power or volume...I think their problem is that their cab is maybe too small. If they need more volume than this, they will simply need another amp and another cab. This thing through any 8x10 will give plenty of volume and even through the Ampeg 8x10, it has tremendous tone at low levels for smaller rooms. I always use it with my 8x10 even in the small joints. Great buy because it will last a life time. I paid 750 for mine and have been on it for 7 years so that is only about 100 a year.

The Ampeg SVT-3 Pro seemed to be the best choice for the money I wanted to spend, and for the sound I wanted to get in regards to reviews. I was extremely excited when I finally got this in, only to be very dissapointed with Ampeg on this head. The biggest issue I noticed right away as a professional Bass player is simply the volume this head puts out. I was in an empty room, plugged into my amazing Aguilar top of the line Bass Cab, and I literally had to put the volume on 7 just to feel my Bass bump. When my band rehearsed the next day, I had this head blasting on 10 and it still wasn't loud enough for me to even blend in with my band. Now in regards to tone, you can definitiely get some great sounds, Ampeg is great with that, but tone means nothing when you can't get the volume supply you need for professional gigs. If you are looking to spend the amount of money this head costs, PLEASE buy the Galien Krueger 1001 RB. Its 700Watts solid state, but tone, volume, functions, and the overall review of that head is absolutely incredible. The Ampeg SVT-3 Pro could have been that break through affordable professional head if they never switched the make of it overseas, and if they atleast made this thing put out 600W - 700W. I hope musicians don't make the mistake I did thining the tube preamps would make a huge difference over solid state, cause for me, it honesty was a huge let down.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I would recommend this unit, for the price, it's well worth it and I get alot of compliments on the sound.
I purchased this amp about a year ago and wanted to use it awhile before writing a review.
I think it's great, the tube preamp, EQ and other tone settings give anyone of any style the ability to shape their sound.
I run it through an Ampeg 4-10 HVLT cab, which runs @ 4 ohms, so I get full use of all the power.
I've used it @ a variety of venues, from outdoors running through the P.A., to medium and small rooms. Always sounds great!
      I use a Bass with active pick-ups.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I use the SVT-3 Pro every night on a gig. I use it for the studio as well. I run it with a Ampeg 410 HLF and it sounds like thunder. You get what ever tone you want, at the volume you want. I've played quite a few places and this thing fits in anywhere. I am always heard at a show, and if there is a PA, my drummer and guitarist do not need me in the monitors. Simply a GREAT BUY. Its an amazing amp with great features and quality. If you gig, I recommend purchasing a rack case for it to give it extra protection. Just make sure your case has plenty of room for ventilation. Play this amp, and you will not turn away.

      450 watts into 4 ohms?

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I love the way this head sounded, full fat and textured beyond belief. It has all the features I like and would want on an amp. However their is no way this thing puts out 450 watts into a 4 ohm load? I have to run the master at 10 and control my volume with the input level. However even that's a task as the thing is always flashing indicating that it is being overloaded. How is this possible when it's at 4 or 5? It dosen't matter whether I use my active or passive basses, the result is the same. My friends GK400rb is as loud and it's rated at 280 watts into a 4 ohm load. Again the tone rocks, but 450, not a chance? Being made overseas is a big turn off as well. I can't recommend this amp for these reasons. Quality is a concern and the volume just isn't there?

      Gotta Get An Ampeg!!!

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I originally ordered a B-stock svt-3 but had problems and returned it and got a brand new one and so far no problems. I"m pushing the 410 HLF cab and it's the bass sound that I have searching for all these years. I've played with the Mesa Boogie m-pulse, hartke rigs, Gallien Kruger, and swr (all solid state models mind you) but they don't sound like an ampeg. First of all the tubes make the biggest difference but you can really tweak your sound to cut through the mix with the svt3. I played a gig last night with it for the first time and I was very surprised by the amount of compliments I received. This things rocks. The reason for the 4 on features is because I think a built in compressor would really complete this head, but oh well, I'll save up for a keeley. Can't wait to set up tonight and do it all over again (although mabee a few less beers). Thanks Ampeg and thanks musician's friend for the way they handled the issues I had with the B-stock head.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

When I bought this, the people working at the store said this amp is really only good for practice, but I'm glad I didn't listen to them. I play mine through a 410HLF and it cranks! It has suited me through every show, PA or no PA.The guys at the store also said that this amp shouldn't power an 810 because it would be underpowering it, but there have been several occasions where I have run it through an 810 and all I get is golden rumble. I also know several people with the same setup and it has never given them any trouble. For the money, this amp is amazing, and I'll probably never need anything else.

Quit Looking For Your Tone...It's Right Here...

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I traded in an SVT Classic to buy the SVT-3Pro because I wanted something more road-worthy than the weight and tubes of the Classic...The SVT-3Pro has FAR exceeded my expectations...all the tone you could ever ask for in a 2 unit rackmount head...I play a Schecter Custom-4 through this and an ampeg 410 and a hartke 410...and plan on changing cabs very soon to the Ampeg 410HLF...which by the way, completely destroys the 810E in tone and low end...

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I have owned this unit for 13 years. I have played hundreds of gigs all over the east coast. I have used it with 2 Carvin 4 string basses, 2 Fender 4 strings and a Yamaha 5 string bass. I owned and used the traditional tube SVT standard for 16 years prior to purchasing this SVT 3PRO. I find that this amp compares favorably in sound to the big heavy tube SVT without the extra 40 pounds of weight or the 6-6550 power tubes that need replacing every few years. I was on the road with this amp for 3 years right after I bought it and never had any trouble. It had to go into the shop for jack replacements about 5 years ago and one other time last summer for a capacitor short. Not bad for the use this amp has had. I love it and will buy another SVT 3PRO to replace this one.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

This amp is amazing for bass, keys, electric cello, even guitar! Amazing REAL TUBES give you the closest you can get to get to decent tone with a solid-state powered amp. The only issue is of course that the power is just not quite on the pro level. If you can even find a 4 ohm bass cab you will most likely still have to use the -15db pad, cutting your volume in half.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I traded an Eden WT550 Traveler for this and I am glad I did. The Eden was OK but had a very dry sound to it is the best way to describe it. The SVT3 Pro in contrast has the warm full sound I could not get with the Eden. The sound is so warm and full that it almost sounds like it has a touch of tube reverb built in. I also own an SVT Classic snd this sounds as good and it weighs 1/3 as much. I could not be happier. The only thing is I wish it was made in the USA rather than Korea.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I bought the Ampeg SVT-3 Pro 4 years ago and set it up through my Ampeg classic 4x10 and 1x15 crates and use a Musicman Stingray. It really rumbles (I mostly use the EQ and low switch)and would be lucky to get turned up a quarter of the way for gigs in standard venues. It really brings the most out of my pedals too, particularly if you run it through the effects loop, I'm able to get the thick wall of sound I'm usually after. If I want something a bit more up the top it delivers a real smooth tone too. I haven't any problems yet and fully recommend it for value, minimal maintainence and it's easy to get around too. I'm stoked I got it.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I just sold this amp after 3 great years of use. The one complaint I have is that the owner's manual is terrible. Once I learned, but starting a thread on talkbass, about this amp then I was fine. It has many great features. Mine was a 1996 USA model and it worked great. It is heavy, about 25 lbs, which is the territory with tubes. Ultimately I decided the tubes weren't worth back surgery. One of the few amps that I might actually miss, having owned Peavey, GK and Hartke prior.

The knobs & sliders are solid, but the push buttons are a little bit loose. There are some great amps out there, do your research and choose the one YOU think sounds best & go for it!
