Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I picked up a Cougar 5 when MF had it on a 'secret sale' (sale price didn't show until you "add to cart"). I had done a little research on the Bad Cat Cougar series prior to my purchase and I understood that they were designed by the folks at Bad Cat USA, but were made in China and used PC boards and components from Kustom and had plywood cases, etc...but for the price I paid, how bad could it be?
Let me be clear; this is possibly the BEST amp for the money out there. I've tried the Class 5 and AC4TV and Blues Junior and LP Jr. amp and many others and it just smokes them all. It compares much closer to a USA Bad Cat Mini Cat or Cub, amps that cost way more even on the used market.
With only 3 controls (Master, Volume, Tone) you'd think it would be limited in available tones, but those three controls allow for a wide array of sounds, from near-shimmering cleans to full-tilt beautiful tube-squished overdrive and much in-between. I've already done one studio gig and two live gigs with the Cougar 5 and it brings the goods and then some.
The sound from 5-watts (Class A) all-tube power into the Celestion V30 speaker is a wonderful thing.
This amp is a keeper. I'll end up getting a genuine USA Bad Cat in the future, but the Cougar will remain with me for a long, long time.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I really like this amp. I did notice a hum that some reviewers wrote about but it seemed to fade as the tubes warmed up and became non existent for me. That really isn't an issue for me. This is simply a great little amp that is ideal for my purpose of DIY recording and songwriting.
Pros
- Easy To Use
- Portable
Cons
- Noisy
- Poor Sound Quality

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
Bad Cat should be embarrassed to have their name on this product. Right out of the box I noticed the cheap construction...even the control knobs are light weight plastic. I can only imagine how cheap the interior components are. Plugged it in and immediately had a very loud, unacceptable hum. The amp sounds OK, but for the price, it should be better. I know this is not a USA made Bad Cat, but at this price point the quality is subpar. I returned it and will not be testing my luck again.
Pros
- Easy To Use

Cons
- Loud 60 Hz Hum

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
This is an update to my previous review: The second replacement arrived yesterday from MF and it too has the hum problem. So, for me, that's three strikes against the Cougar 5W model. Too bad, because this would otherwise be a great amp for recording or home practice.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
The first amp MF sent me produced a loud 60-cycle hum. The hum was present with or without a guitar plugged in and made the amp basically useless for recording or at-home practice (my two intended uses). I have had several tube amps over the years and never had this issue before; but to be sure that hum wasn't coming from dirty power in my music room, I tried plugging the amp into other outlets in the house, tried switching off computers nearby etc... made no difference.
So I returned the amp and got a replacement - no hassle and great customer service as usual with MF.
Unfortunately, the replacement also had the hum problem, which suggests that its inherent to the design of the amp and that they all sound this way. However, its possible that the hum issue was a one-off and that due to some mix-up at the distribution center MF inadvertently sent me the same faulty amp twice.
Either way, the amp was useless to me so I returned it and am now waiting for a second replacement.
This whole process has been frustrating to say the least, but I have been prepared to give the amp a second and third chance because the basic tone seems to be very good (although its hard to be sure with the distraction of the hum) and the volume and gain range is just what I was looking for. Also, the build quality of the amp is excellent.
I will update this review once the next replacement arrives...
