FIRST THINGS FIRST: The idle hum is seriously NOT a big deal and is barely noticeable. Many of the low reviews for this amp mention the idle hum and state that it makes the amp unusable, yet in my experience this is far from accurate. It IS there but it's very subtle, doesn't get louder as you turn up the volume, and is immediately overpowered by the beautiful chimey tones from this amp as soon as you start to play.

SOUND: As you can probably guess from the EL-84 power section this amp definitely has a VOX sound to it, in the best way. The Vintage 30 takes a while to break in with only 5w pushing it, but it starts loosen up nicely after the first hour or so, and it sounds great with this amp. Some people have mentioned a lack of bass, but I find this amp to be very nicely EQ'd for a low watt practice amp. Generally speaking, lower watt amps will always have less bottom end than higher watt amps due to having smaller transformers, and also any added bass would require more power and reduce headroom and overall volume. The open back design gives the amp a very full sound, and the cabinet is sized just large enough to sound great yet still be light and portable. The interaction between the Volume and Master knobs allows for a wide range of classic clean and overdrive sounds, while the Tone knob lets you dial in the brightness.

QUALITY: This amp is made in China, but so are most new Celestions. Who cares. This amp comes with an awesome stock speaker and a quality plywood cabinet (no particle board anywhere). The plexi front panel and orange jewel light are nice touches, as well as the leather handle. The knobs and jacks feel solid. The tubes that ship in it are cheap Chinese tubes, but a set of nice JJ's can be had for a minimal investment (only 3 tubes to replace) and would definitely be worth it.

FINAL WORDS: For the sale price this amp is a STEAL. For full retail I might lean more towards a Vox AC15 or an Orange Tiny Terror Combo (mostly for the extra power), but for a LOW watt amp (4-6 watts) this little Bad Cat is king. The Cougar 5 gets loud enough for gigs (with PA support), but also sounds great at bedroom levels. I previously used an AC4TV 10" combo for practice, but this blows it out of the water.

Bad Cat should be embarrassed to have their name on this product. Right out of the box I noticed the cheap construction...even the control knobs are light weight plastic. I can only imagine how cheap the interior components are. Plugged it in and immediately had a very loud, unacceptable hum. The amp sounds OK, but for the price, it should be better. I know this is not a USA made Bad Cat, but at this price point the quality is subpar. I returned it and will not be testing my luck again.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I picked up a Cougar 5 when MF had it on a 'secret sale' (sale price didn't show until you "add to cart"). I had done a little research on the Bad Cat Cougar series prior to my purchase and I understood that they were designed by the folks at Bad Cat USA, but were made in China and used PC boards and components from Kustom and had plywood cases, etc...but for the price I paid, how bad could it be?
Let me be clear; this is possibly the BEST amp for the money out there. I've tried the Class 5 and AC4TV and Blues Junior and LP Jr. amp and many others and it just smokes them all. It compares much closer to a USA Bad Cat Mini Cat or Cub, amps that cost way more even on the used market.

With only 3 controls (Master, Volume, Tone) you'd think it would be limited in available tones, but those three controls allow for a wide array of sounds, from near-shimmering cleans to full-tilt beautiful tube-squished overdrive and much in-between. I've already done one studio gig and two live gigs with the Cougar 5 and it brings the goods and then some.
The sound from 5-watts (Class A) all-tube power into the Celestion V30 speaker is a wonderful thing.

This amp is a keeper. I'll end up getting a genuine USA Bad Cat in the future, but the Cougar will remain with me for a long, long time.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

    First I remove sino el-84 and replaced with a GE el-84 .
The pre amp tubes were very sweet sounding and could not improve the tone it had , my NOS 12ax7 had more gain but less sweetness !
The amp loves pedal overdrives and the FX loop is fantastic for my pedal delays and reverb and chorus.
It sounds like a good 12 string with chorus but I am playing a 6 string.
No el-84 hum problems , but like all tube amps crank the gain way up and your single coils will cause some hum.
You do not notice this on 30 watt amps as much because you do not have to crank it as high.
    Fantastic practice amp for me.
I never had a thought to send it back , but I recommend a change for the el-84 tube for reliability.
I bent the cover screen on the tube section back some and was able to switch tubes without removing chassis.
It is self bias class A so its plug and play.
The speaker is perfectly matched for the tone I like !
Its a very nice and expensive combo, but if you love great clean tones and no overdrive pre amp tube stack it is for you.
You may overdrive it with a nice treble booster or OD pedal or even higher gain !
You pay a lot but get a lot too , a tone that is awesome .
Fact is it has the best clean tones I have ever gotten out of a amp.
This amp plays music where others try but can not match the 5 watt cougar combo.
Other brand amps has no clean tones this good in my opinion.
Experience with this amp I consider invaluable too me.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Alright, so I'd describe this amp as being somewhere in-between a Vox and a Marshall. I really like the sounds I can get from this amp.
I did lots of research and tried lots of different amps, and I was down to choosing between a Vox AC15 and the Cougar 5. I ended up choosing the Bad Cat because it sounds a lot like an AC15, with subtle differences (which are good differences, if you ask me, more suited for my sound) but unlike the AC15, this has an effects loop and a much better speaker output configuration.
The speaker in the cab is not hard-wired in, and I like that a lot. It means that I could run a full stack with this little guy (probably never will, but hey, it's nice to have the option!)
I really like the fact that this amp is minimalistic in a way that is not limiting to what you can do with it. It doesn't have on-board reverb like the AC15, but it DOES have an effects loop in which you can put whichever reverb you prefer. It's only 5 watts, but you can run two cabs off of it, and you'll get a big sound.
I was nervous about just having a tone cut, with no 3 band EQ, but I've found that I really don't need the EQ, and I spend a lot less time hunched over my amp trying to get it to sound just right. And in the future, I can simply add an EQ to my pedal board if I want more control of the sound.
This amp doesn't have a lot of gain in and of itself. You can only get up to the edge of what I'd call "crunch" with the gain in the amp, but it responds great to dirt pedals. I'm running a Caroline Cannonball (great pedal) in front of it, and I can play alt metal/hardcore/heavy rock, no problem.
Don't be deceived into thinking that this thing is quiet. It can blow your face off if you crank it. I haven't gigged with it, but I'm sure it would do fine, especially if you put another cab on it.
As to the hum that some people have mentioned, I think that some have it a lot worse than others. Mine hums just a little, but it's totally okay. It doesn't affect my sound, and I never even notice it. You might want to play through the one you're going to buy to make sure that it doesn't have this problem. It's not a problem for me, but I don't know if these amps are all exactly the same.
So, definitely at least give it a look. I play an Epi LP Standard through a Caroline Cannonball distortion into this guy. I play lots of alt metal/ rock/ hard rock/ hardcore kind of stuff, and with the added gain from my distortion pedal, this amp does it with no problems.
This isn't just for blues, folks. It's a solid hard rock amp. I'm very happy with it.
    God bless!

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Have seen this on sale before but based upon the overall ratings I passed it by. Last time it came up for sale I actually read the ratings. Seemed that the negative ratings all referenced the same hum. That' was it.. Typical problem with imported tube amps.
Either tubes are bad or most likely one was jostled loose during shipping. I took a chance and only regret not doing so sooner. My amp is dead quiet, I need to double check that it's on sometimes. I play single coils 99% of the time and out of a 1/2 dozen or so name brand low watt amps in my house this is the most quiet.
There seem to be haters out there that was t to compare this to a hand wired american amp. IDK I judge my gear by the way it works, not how much it cost or warped political bias based upon where it was built. Good is good regardless and this amp is a keeper and at the price I bought it for its also a bargain.
If these guys that tanked the reviews based upon the hum were the experienced guys they claim to be they would have recognized the problem immediately. I guess MF has their reason for not suggesting they reseat the tubes themselves but if you own tube amps it's just something you learn to do regardless of the brand name or the cost.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

The first amp MF sent me produced a loud 60-cycle hum. The hum was present with or without a guitar plugged in and made the amp basically useless for recording or at-home practice (my two intended uses). I have had several tube amps over the years and never had this issue before; but to be sure that hum wasn't coming from dirty power in my music room, I tried plugging the amp into other outlets in the house, tried switching off computers nearby etc... made no difference.

So I returned the amp and got a replacement - no hassle and great customer service as usual with MF.

Unfortunately, the replacement also had the hum problem, which suggests that its inherent to the design of the amp and that they all sound this way. However, its possible that the hum issue was a one-off and that due to some mix-up at the distribution center MF inadvertently sent me the same faulty amp twice.

Either way, the amp was useless to me so I returned it and am now waiting for a second replacement.

This whole process has been frustrating to say the least, but I have been prepared to give the amp a second and third chance because the basic tone seems to be very good (although its hard to be sure with the distraction of the hum) and the volume and gain range is just what I was looking for. Also, the build quality of the amp is excellent.

I will update this review once the next replacement arrives...

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I had to leave a review for this amp after purchasing it new from MF. It is terrible in my opinion. If you have money to burn go for it. If you are a beginner this might work for you. But if you care about your tone at all avoid it. I am a bit surprised by its poor tone. I read a number of reviews, Vintage Celestial speaker, tube quality... whatever the case, it was terrible and I immediately returned it. There is just no quality to it whatsoever. Hope it helps.

I really like this amp. I did notice a hum that some reviewers wrote about but it seemed to fade as the tubes warmed up and became non existent for me. That really isn't an issue for me. This is simply a great little amp that is ideal for my purpose of DIY recording and songwriting.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Despite all the comments across the net about this being manufactured in China in partnership with Bad Cat, rather than hand-built by them here in the USA, this amp is extremely well put together and offers unrivaled value at this price point.

The 5 watts of Class A EL84 tone is simply outstanding - clear, punchy, loud enough to make yourself heard in a small gig (use a PA for anything louder), extremely smooth and creamy overdrive. Literally every inch of all three dials is useful, which hardly ever happens. The preamp volume goes from crystalline clear to a medium overdrive. Rhythm guitar with the overdrive is thick and edgy and full. Lead tone is really round and singing, but for an extra oomph you may want to put a boost out front. The single tone knob goes from very dark/all bass and mids/plush to very sharp/heavy treble and high mids emphasis/grinding, and everything in between.

The effects loop is a welcome feature on an amp this small, and works great. I usually use it to add reverb, the only feature I wish the amp had that is doesn't.

Construction is top notch across the board, it just oozes good contruction. They chose the right assemblers in China, that's for sure. Someone really paid attention at every step. It feels built like a tank.

The only drawback, which I didn't subtract any points for, is that the circuit features a small hum. If you play at any volume at all it will be immediately forgotten. If you play at any distance from the amp at all it will be immediately forgotten. It's really only noticeable in a small room, at low volume, when playing right on top of the amp. Even then, it's VERY low volume, and doesn't increase with the amp volume. I don't know if there is any batch-to-batch or unit-to-unit variation, but I would rate my Cougar 5's hum at 1/10. It's not dead quiet, but it's very close. I've owned and experienced far worse in the hum department.

Additionally, I've read that if you truly object to any hum at all, Hanser/Bad Cat will have you ship them the chassis and modify it for no cost. It will, of course, change the tone (how, I'm not sure).

I highly recommend this little beast, it just sounds incredible at all volumes. Never thin, never "small," always bug and lush and round. Pure tube tone. A real steal.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is dead quiet.. I play mostly single coil fenders and even after running it through boost pedals the amp is silent. I saw some reviews complaining about hum, first thing that comes to mind is that a tube needed to be reseated. Pretty common issue with tube amps, boxes get jostled pretty well during shipping. Happens with tube amps from any manufacturer.
I have several low powered amps and never could find the tone I was looking for in a practice amp at home volumes. This amp is exactly what I have been looking for. I've seen it on sale many times but avoided it because of many negative reviews. After some research I realized that most of the negative reviews were from people that had unrealistic expectations or haters that don't like the idea of a manufacturer using modern build methods to get an affordable amp to their customers.

Return the amp as this was very noisy. Contact BadCat tech support and they point me to Hanser instead.

Save your money and by the real thing and not this. The only thing this has in common with the real Bad Cat is the name.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

There is only one thing wrong with this amp- they put it into a box that is too small. I don't know why makers do this. Blackstar 5 watt made the exact mistake. So did Fender with the Blues Jr., I think. It has no bass at all compared to a larger cabinet.

Other than that, which doesn't mean anything to some players, this amp is magnificent. The clean tone is very crisp and great-sounding (if you can get around the "no bass" thing). And when you turn it up it is a monster. The tone of the dirt as the Gain knob goes over half is about as good as I've heard. If an American-made Bad Cat sound better than this, I'm pleasantly surprised.

But in my opinion, the boxy sound of that tiny cabinet is way too close to a deal-breaker.
I'm keeping mine, but just barely. :)

The tone really is great, and the FX loop is a great feature on this inexpensive unit. But the reviews about buzz are true: I bought one mint with open box, and it hums constantly, even when nothing is plugged into it. That makes it not really usable for gigs (or at least the ones I play)

If you're looking at buying this one mint level 1 open box, don't buy--that's probably the one I got, and I am returning it.

I've almost hit my 30 year mark of guitar playing, and naturally I've played thru many amps over the years. This is not a high gain amp by any stretch but it is a great sounding, easy to use amp. It can get great country to 70's, Southern Rock over drive. The stock speaker is a little on the darker side and I believe the amp maybe that way itself as well. This is not a Fendery bright or thin sounding amp. It is generally very warm sounding and full since it has a 12" speaker onboard. Overall build quality is solid and clean. The covering and grille clothe look great.

Great little amp. Nicely built and it has excellent tone. Very simple and straight forward controls. This amp does not play the guitar for you. You are definitely going to notice your playing. This little amp works out well in smaller clubs. Guitarist are inevitably too loud, we are trying to get to the sweet spot on our amps. This amp gets to that point at reasonable volumes. Many reviews reported unwanted hum or noise, the one I received is quiet. Overall this amp is a great value. You can pay a lot more money and still not get the quality of build and tone. These are not point to point hand built boutique amps, but they sound like they are.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This Amp is a tone monster and I have not had a chance to crank it yet !
The way I hear it so far this is a classic beautiful sounding tube amp that stays mostly clean until the master volume is near full on.
For this amp I have a NOS el-84 power tube to put in .

The tube driven FX loop sounds fantastic with a delay and reverb .
A couple of folks are complaining about hum which el-84 tubes are known for.
It is possible the filter capacitor on the power supply needs to be formed more completely by running the amp for a few days ?
Possibly Replace the power tube is a option !

This amp begs for the right 3 NOS tubes .

I bought 2 OD pedals from musicians friends , the Green Rhino and T-rex Alberta OD and they sounded fantastic with the Cougars stock tubes !

I think the BC Cougar 5 sounds like a great Magnatone amp !
I have a Univox copy of a Magnatone combo that's sounds very similar too my ears !

This Cougar combo amp does not have a bad tone in it anywhere with stock tubes , no booming bass ,no fizz nor any artifact or hint of bland tones.
You can find high gain amps cheaply , but tone like this amp is not cheap nor does it sound like it neither !
If I played on a big stage this amp would be in my dressing room back stage for me to warm up !

You would not believe how good this amp sounds using a glass slide , I never heard the sound this good from my other tube amps too be truthful !
The 5 watts limits it somewhat on where and what it can be used for unless you mic it thru the PA .

This is the 3rd stupid deal of the day I did something smart on , MF made it easy for me each time .
                        Thanks MF again.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 5 5W Class A Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

The Bad Cat Cougar 5 is a fantastic amp. I just got mine in yesterday and it has become my favorite amp overnight. This is by far the best 5 watt amp for under a grand. No Vox, Marshall, Fender, Blackheart, or any other amp in a similar price range can compare. The sound is very warm, crunchy, and defined. You can hear every note clearly, even when strumming with a very overdriven sound. The build quality is also superb. I own a few new and vintage fenders, along with other amps, and this amp is by far the best build quality. Very heavy duty handle, knobs, and cabinet.

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this stellar amp that I think that I should clear up. No, this is not the same quality as the USA Bad Cat amps and yes, it is made in China. Though some people can't get over feeling like Bad Cat "betrayed" them, the rest of us can enjoy the fact that they put together a superb sounding, super high quality, awesome amp for a super reasonable price! My amp does have a tiny bit of hum, but I don't notice it unless I'm listening for it and it seems go go away once the amp is sufficiently warmed up.

I've been playing professionally for years, and this amp will definitely be making it's way around all of the studios and clubs that I play in. Awesome job, Bad Cat!!!
