This is one of the best amps I've played in years. The clean and OD channels have tone for days with a noticeable solid low end and sparkling overtones. Three dimensional depth and ability to let your guitar's tone shine through. I used many USA guitars as well as bargain basement types. They all sounded very good but this amp will show any weakness as well. This amps is also touch sensitive and lets the better tone-woods standout more pronounced, where other amps at this price range can color everything, which helps the bargain guitars.

Some comment on a weak clean channel. True, you may have the clean cranked and the OD channel much lower when direct to guitar for overall level balancing. It reminds me of the inputs JCM800 2203, where the low input requires the gain and volume settings much higher to get levels up, but gives a sparkle to clean tones with light OD overtones. The 2203 high input hits fast & hard at substantially lower settings, same with Cougar 50. If you're using a good comp or od pedal(s) with the Cougar 50 clean channel, levels will come up nicely, and better match the OD levels.

Seems solid, being used in a studio. It's been the cornerstone of my rig since getting it in Nov 2012, always running it at every rehearsal, in tandem with one of my other amps (Mesa, Orange, Marshall, others).

Speaker cab makes a big difference with this amp. Running it in a 4x10 cab was not as pleasing as running it though V30 equipped cabs. Present setup is 2x12 Orange v30 open cab and Albion 2x12 closed cab (bargain with VG tones). The Albion fills in where the V30 leaves off and together make the Cougar 50 sing. Like the open 2x12 v30 over the closed 2x12 v30 with this amp.

I would say its in the Brit amp tones versus the Mesa USA types. Other band mate uses a Recto and this amp is vg as opposing cutting tones. Plugging in my old faithful 77 LP custom brought out tones I'd never knew were there.

The FX loop sounds good. Reverb is good, if you like a light touch. If want drippy levels, best to turn it down, and put your favorite through the loop.

For the price when on sale, its an excellent addition for any tone locker.

I hate to write something like this and I hope it only applies to my amp. When I got the amp it sounded so so and I thought it was a bit weak on the volume side for a 50 watt amp. I always retube amps when I get one and I thought maybe it had a weak tube in it. I took the chassis out to retube it and low and behold, there in front of me was an output transformer that said Kustom Defender112, 40 watts. I'm in the process of getting the problem worked out with the people at Hanser Music Corp (Don't call Bad Cat in reference to anything about this amp. Bad Cat didn't build this amp and has nothing to do with it. Only the Bad Cat USA built amps are amps produced and sold by the current Bad Cat company. That surprised me also. When you go to the Hanser website they don't even list the Bad Cat Cougar line of amps as one of their many different brands of amps. Hopefully my amp is the only one with a 40 watt output transformer in it but you might want to check yours if you own this amp. You can't get 50 watts out of a 40 watt transformer. I was really surprised when I learned that the current Bad Cat company has nothing to do with the Cougar series amps. I'm not trying to start anything, just informing people of what happened to me. I feel that the amp is alright for the Stupid Deal price I paid for it but if I'd paid the full price for it I would have really been torqued. You might check and see if you have the proper or 50 watt output transformer in your amp if you own one. It'll probably be a Kustom brand transformer also.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 50H 50W Class AB Tube Guitar Amp Head:

My Rivera Doce clubster was in the shop so I needed a viable replacement and chose this Badcat. As others have stated, it was made by Kustom to Badcat's specs. It's a great amp, and I love it! It's loud and proud, with a very nice clean channel and great tube overdrive. It reminds me of an old Marshall. Shared tone stack for the two channels, and four presets on the clean channel and a master volume for the overdrive. Effects loop, power and standby toggle switchs on the back, with a 4-8-16 ohm switch as well! I wish I'd had this amp in the early 70's, as it's perfect for my style of classic rock etc! I don't think it's suitable for metal unless you add a pedal. I'd prefer a Peavey 6505 + or Mesa for that. Overall it's a great sounding amp that is perfect for shows and plenty loud. I recommend! Part timer out!

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 50H 50W Class AB Tube Guitar Amp Head:

A lot of classic amps I have played or own have been almost plug and play with not much tweaking. This one for sure takes a little tweaking to set your tone right and because of this you can get a lot of different tones out of it. There is a lot of gain on tap and because of this I have found some of my lower output guitars work very well. Most of the modern guitars I plugged into it were a little harder to dial in however plug a vintage telecaster in and you have instant classic rock. I am using a vintage Marshall cabinet with greenbacks - they pair up really well. Dial back the treble/gain and work the master volume!

Was not a noisy head at all - however all pedals, guitars, cables and power supplies are maintained in my studio and have found that this helps with any amp ;)

Spend a little time with this head and you will love it. Its not a typical amp that you are going to "Dime" and be done.

I'm really happy there are so many fans of this amp. Can't argue value for your money here..However, I just found the amp too tight and compressed.. Sure, it can be loud as all heck, but there's no sense of headroom and ease to the sound. I tried it through multiple speakers hoping for a match, but finally gave up.Every one of my other tube amps has far more ease and dynamic response to it. Sorry, because I really tried to like it..
Just my two cents worth/ your experience may be completely different.
        BTW:
MF is excellent in their return policy! Call, print a label, and send. Couldn't be easier.Nominal handling fee was charged, but it was well worth the convenience.5 stars, guys.

Great amp for the money. Makes a good pedal platform. The lead channel has far more gain than I need but replacing V1 and V2 with lower gain tubes takes care of that.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 50H 50W Class AB Tube Guitar Amp Head:

If you like rock, any kind of rock, this amp is amazing! You can get the full spectrum of gain sounds. From barely gained or twangy SRV type stuff, to all out scooped mids new age high gain metal, it's all here.

The mid boost switch, tone knob, and presence knob provide a huge amount of flexibility in sound.

Scoop the mids, crank the gain, and pull the treble up a bit and this this thing is an absolute metal monster. There's a vid on utube of it's "metal sound" that is nowhere near what this thing is capable of doing. The vid sounds muddy, kinda early maiden type metal. Let me assure you, you can absolutely get articulate well separated super high gain metal tones. It's awesome! As most others have said, it's more british sounding but the presence knob and treble can manipulate this largely.

Classic rock? Dial the gain back, boost the mids, and drop the treble. Using the afore mentioned controls and the normal tone stack, you can hit it all. Seriously, anything that rocks this amp can do well.

Cleans are shiny and brilliant. Great throughout the range going from smooth jazz like sounds to twangy tele type chickin pickin stuff. I agree with one of the other reviewers about the clean and gain channel volume difference. You gotta crank the cleans to keep up. Should have put a universal master on this guy.

The reverb sounds good, not great. It definitely doesn't have much saturation so if you like that, you'll need a pedal.

I'm running it through a 4x12 with Celestion V12-80's (very similar to V30's) and it sounds fantastic.

I'm going to need an attenuator for sure so I don't get the cops called on me. With the gain cranked, and the master barely on, it's ear bleedingly loud.

I wish it had a separate tone stack for both channels and a universal master volume. Switching channels requires tweaking.

If it had separate tone stacks and a universal master this thing would get six stars.

Comments about Bad Cat Cougar 50H 50W Class AB Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Aside from the weak reverb this amp really rocks. I got mine at 50% sale and would say it is well worth it. The OD channel is a bit too OD for my taste, but I can roll it back far enough to use it well. If you are into strong OverDrive you will love that channel. And with the reverb, the effects loop will let you add a better one anyway.

The clean channel is it's strong point by far. That they could get it so right at this price point is the big story. Sparkling crystal clean if you roll off the volume on the guitar with the amp turned up, crank the guitar volume and the warmth starts coming in.

I am running it through the Bad Cat Unleash and into an Orange Slant 4 closed back and it sounds awesome in my home. Take the Unleash out and this thing will shatter windows easily. I would not want it any more powerful.

I use a series of Gibson ES's, LP's (and Junior), Collings I-35 and City Limits and this amp just sounds great with them all. It does very well with Fender type offerings as well.

i freaking LOVE this amp. I have a nice collection of Mesas and several Marshalls and some other boutique and not so boutique amps. The tone that comes out of this is just incredible. CLEAN. cleans and PLENTY of gain. LOVE the notched mids. 4 position switched with some REALLY nice pre EQed tones dialed in. I play this through a newly acquired VHT tweed ?!?!? 412 cab with 3 english greenbacks and 1 GT75 in it and it sounds like god (little g). Really warm but can get NASTY! Can you tell I LOVE THIS AMP? This is Chinese, says so right on the back but...MAN this sounds good!

The Bad Cat Cougar 50H head is a very capable rock guitar head. I replaced the stock Chinese tubes with JJ's "btw, this uses four 12AX7's, not three" and it totally rocks! The tube cage surrounding the EL34's took a few minutes to get off, and I will leave it off now. Yes, this does have a Kustom power transformer, but it is rated for 50 watts. I picked up a used footswitch and hooked this amp up to a 2x12 cabinet, and I am totally impressed! The distortion is fantastic, and I only use a boost pedal for leads. I picked mine up as a used for dirt cheap from MF and couldn't be happier with the money spent!!
