Makes amplified acoustic instruments sound more natural.

3-band recording-console-quality EQ with sweepable mid and low frequency notch filter. Phase reversal, ground lift, line level out, dedicated tuner out, TRS effects loop, and even a pre/post switchable DI output with pad make this a true studio-quality device that shines onstage. Hardwire bypass, non-slip rubber bottom, included 12V power supply.

The BBE Process--"What it Is"
Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.

In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".

When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.

This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.

BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.

The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

I'm using this with an electric violin. It's solidly built and has a lot of options. It took some time to figure out what each thing really did, but once it was dialed in, it made a significant improvement to my sound. Glad I bought it.

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

I've played my Taylor DN3 equipped with a Fishman Rare Earth into this box, then to a little mixer to two powered Kustom Monitors so far. Did an A/B of the before & after and have so far had 3 tone-lovers agree that it enhances the right frequencies/overtones of an acoustic guitar. Even through my little Danelectro Nifty Seventy bass practice amp this sounds great. Definitely removes that cheap, piezo/thin sounding acoustic-electric sound that bothers me with most pickup configs. This is 2nd to only micing your acoustic with two mics in the studio. Unit is "heavy", which we all know is the first tip off to quality, and it's sexy. I'm sure it would sound even better through a real PA!

I use this to eliminate the muffled tone on my Epi Valve Jr. amp. with my Tele.
I don't need to pay for an amp mod and I have many options in tone.
              Great Solution!

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

Bought this BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal on the "Stupid Deal of the Day" - Great price!!!!!

I've been looking for something to spice up my acoustic guitar and this pedal is "IT"! Having an active preamp with EQ is great as that by itself is adds a lot to the guitar, specially having an XLR out. However, the BBE Sonic Maximizer circuit is truly magic. I can easily add bass and highs with the EQ but the Sonic Max process adds "definition" to the sound and makes the guitar stand out. Really nice and I was not expecting it to be this good.

What REALLY got me excited is that this pedal made my Les Paul and Strat sound beautiful! This product is marketed for acoustic instruments but I gotta tell you - it brought my electrics alive!!! Haven't tried it on Bass Guitar but I bet it is going to be great for that as well!

Very usable product - I'll be using it it all the time now.

Gotta say though that I'm a bit disappointed w/ MF - this is the second item that I've ordered that was clearly an "open" box item. the first had surface scratches and was not wrapped like an earlier same unit that I bought. This one had a knob on the pot that is broken and the scotch tape on the plastic bag was torn off! The unit itself works great so I decided to not return it but I'm not sure what is going on here w/ MF. Very disappointing!!!

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

This pedal works very well. The sonic maximizer really improves acoustic tone when plugging into a mixer. It is important to note this unit does not have a bypass for the entire pedal... only the maximizer section. The equalizer is always in your signal path, which is not always desirable. A bypass for the whole pedal would make this unit spectacular, but still pleased.

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

This thing rules. The fact that it has a DI built in means you can run that to the board and still use the 1/4" out for an amp as monitor.

The EQ section works quite well, as does the notch freq.

The built-in Sonic Maximizer has the same specs as the stompbox model, so it should work just as well as the Sonic Stomp.

The effects loop works great, too.

The path through the device is: Input -> Gain -> EQ (including notch) -> FX loop -> sonic maximizer -> Vol -> Outputs.

If you want, you can isolate the sonic maximizer section by plugging directly into the FX loop - thus bypassing the Gain/EQ/notch sections of this pedal.

Note that there's a pre/post button on the back that will allow the DI out to be pre-volume knob, so you can use the 1/4" for adjustable volume (say if your stage amp is far away from you), while letting the DI output's level remain hot - when set to "pre", the DI is equal to vol at full with the button set to "post" (ie full volume).

And of course, I wouldn't be recommending this product if it didn't do a bang up job of making acoustic instruments sound much better than just going straight to the board.

Sub-saddle piezo's tend to sound brittle and most lack the tonal quality of the instrument it's trying to amplify. But this pedal allows you to really dial in the EQ and tone.

The only thing I think would've improved this product is the addition of a compressor in the front end as well. I have a BBE Opto Stomp, which I really like as a 'transparent' compressor. I find that compressors greatly help the tone of those piezo pickup systems. Adding that to this pedal would've made it an all-in-one swiss army knife pedal.

BTW, I found the compressor sounded better before the Acoustimax in the chain, rather than after it or in its FX loop.

The mute stomp button is a great thing, too, for all the reasons you can imagine.

You can put this thing first in your chain, after some fx boxes, or in your amp's send/rtn loop (it can handle loud volumes like you get in amp loops). Note that the sonic maximizers tend to work best in the amp fx loop, although they do work pretty well before the pre-amp section if you're running your amp fairly clean. The dirtier you run your pre-amp section, the more the amp's tone will overpower any work that sonic maximizer does.

Built like a tank, this unit is a breeze to operate. Plug and play, the BBE Sonic Maximizer is what separates this from the LR Baggs ParaDi. The Maximizer sweetens practically any guitar, and makes it come alive. EQ is easy to dial in good tone from any acoustic, and even makes a lesser instrument sound amazing. Very pleased.

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

Hands down the best acoustic pre-amp I've ever owned. Super high quality unit (built like a tank) and takes your acoustic tone from a 2 to a 10. Great features as well (awesome notch filter, mute switch, eq, etc.). I run this from the xlr D.I. out into the PA system and also 1/4" direct out to my acoustic amp. Have always used BBE outboard gear but must say, they have taken the cake on this one. I would honestly pay double or triple for this unit. It is worth it. My Breedlove's are even thanking me for buying this. Nice job BBE !!!!!!!!! By the way, spend and extra $100 and buy the 21' Monster acoustic guitar cable (it is all that as well). Happy playing my friends !

                    Clear the mud!

Comments about BBE Acoustimax Sonic Maximizer/Preamp Pedal:

How many times have you personally gone to a venue and say "The sound man doesn't have a clue?"Well only part of that statement is true, in that a good soundman can do a lot, but put in a BBE anywhere in the chaing pre Amp wise, and anybody can be a Great soundman.BBE products take away the mud factor. Those annoying and overpowering mids that make everything sound terrible. These units clean up stuff so well that you can actually turn down the overall volume and still get all of those great harmonic overtones normally heard at high volumes.IMO you can't buy a more affordable device to clean up your sound. No batteries either as the unit is completely passive. It's just amazing what these folks have invented here.
