Lets talk about what this box offers. #1 Hardwire bypass...which thankfully a lot of builders of the lower priced budget dirt boxes are now starting to include as standard build. So far so good. #2 The AC in is on the top of the unit rather than on the side. I personally perfer it on the top where it is out of the way of the instrument in and out. #3 This pedal has some weight to it so it actually feels like somthing and the outward appearance is of a quality piece. #4 It has a nice beefy rubber non slip bottom pad. #5 Most likely the best battery access of all the pedals I currently own. #6 Nicely voiced tone control also better than some of my more expensive boxes. #7 Plenty of gain on tap but can still be used at lower gain settings and still sound good. #8 Distortion voice sounds good, chunky yet smooth, articulate, responds to pick attack well and has a good tight bottom and no icepick highs. So I think thats about it other than the price is unreal for what you are getting. This thing sounds great through my Genz Benz El'Diablo combo (tube amp.) I like turning the tone control to its darkest setting, the tone gets smooth and dark but the notes just flow and you still get good bite and articulation, its a certain tone that none of my other overdrives/distortions can get. The other dirt boxes I own tht I have A/B ed it with is... Digitech Bad Monkey and Hardwire Tube drive, Boss DS1, OD3, SD1, Fulltone version #1 OCD and GT500, Barber LTD Silver, Xotic BB and RC, DeltaLab RD1, CoolCat Co1, MXR Classic Distortion.. There is more but that is where the comparisons end, another odd thing is that the BBE sounds different than all of these other dirt boxes and they ALL have a sound that can be described as "generic". If I used this box in a recording I am sure no one a lwould know if it were a 20 dollar box or a 300 dollar box. I like it lot.
This is a fairly typical low-end dirtbox circuit using a single 072 OpAmp. It's well-made with a decent Carling-style switch and a sturdy project box.
