The BBE Process--"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.
The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

I bought this product used and I had fairly high hopes based on what I had heard/seen online. I must admit, this product was not as "effective" as I was expecting, but I think I set my hopes a little to high. The "flaw" with this product is that the returns from it diminish in proportion to the quality of your other equipment. With a good tube amp, the Sonic Stomp has a fairly inconspicuous effect on the sound, and the sound that is produced is not necessarily better than the original (I play through a Fender Blues Deluxe, which already has plenty of clarity, presence, and bass). However, the effectiveness of this pedal becomes much more noticeable when it is used in tandem with a distortion pedal (Boss DS-1) through a clean amp. Where this pedal really shines is through my Vox Valvetronix (a modelling amp), where there was a very noticeable and pleasing increase in tone. Overall, this product is very good, but I caution anyone interested that the better quality the rest of your gear, the less effect this pedal has. So if you get most of your tone from a good tube amp, this product is probably not for you. But, if you get most of your tone from distortion pedals or a solid state amp, this pedal is very effective and pleasant sounding.

I bought this pedal to accompany a hybrid Marshall amp head with the goal of cleaning up the muddy solid-state sound. My mission was to use different configurations of pedals, both in front of the amp and in the effects loop, to best emulate a tube-amp sound. After messing around with different configurations, I found the best way to accomplish this by putting this pedal into the effects loop, and putting an Ibanez Tube Screamer with a clean boost pedal before it. I used an MXR Micro Amp because it added a nice amount of treble to the sound, which I would not want on a tube amp. I prefer the BBE Boosta Grande for clean boost on a tube amp. This fairly simple 3-pedal setup transformed my muddy amp into a tube-ish, bright-sounding amp! The main drawback, and this is a big one, is that the Sonic Stomp creates a significant digital sound. My playing dynamic became quite "artificial" sounding, not dissimilar to a programmed guitar sound. With the right post-production EQing, I was able to hide this digital sound enough where it was acceptable for decent sounding demos...but don't expect to get a true tube-driven sound on record. I would deem this pedal pretty useless for live performances.

All in all, if your purpose is to balance out the sound of a cheap solid-state amp for an amateur recording, mix this with a clean boost and a Tube Screamer to get the best sound out of your amp...but don't buy this hoping to make your amp sound like it cost an extra grand.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

From the moment I plugged my guitar in and turned on the little blue light I've been impressed. It makes my set-up sound so much better. It sounds " cleaner ". My highs are cleaner, My lows tighter. But bear in mind, its not an effects pedal. Its meant to clean up your sound and it does just that. Its a great first pedal in you signal chain. No matter how good your sound is, buy it. It'll make your sound better.
Strong sturdy lil box. Love the blue light!
Just got it Christmas Day so don't know. But from all the reviews I've read it'll prob. be around for quiet a while.
The way it makes my guitar/ amp sound it's worth every penny

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased one of these BBE Sonic Stomp boxes recently and just played my second job with it. Honestly, everything positive you read in the other reviews is true. This is one piece of gear that I would buy again in a minute if this one was lost.On Friday I received it from UPS. Having used a rack mount BBE for years in my home studio I knew there wasn?t much to do except hook it up and adjust how much of the signal goes through the unit. A few hours later I was on a job at a bar that I regularly play with my band. I have been using a VOX VT30 (excellent amp) and this night I was playing a Les Paul. I set the BBE to about one o?clock on both knobs and just left it on all the time. It made my guitar and amp sparkle with a tone that I have been searching for and thought I almost had with the VOX VT 30. This club is a shot and beer turn-it-up-and-wail job (we do classic rock 70?s-80?s at this place). The BBE was great. The next night I did a job at a very upscale restaurant doing ?lite FM? and dinner music. I changed guitars and played a late 80?s Epiphone Sheraton and a 1982 Ibanez AM-50. Two guitars with a big sound range. They both sounded incredible with the BBE. (When I started my third set I didn?t have the BBE engaged and halfway through the first song I wondered where my tone went. I clicked on the BBE and it was back to ?wonderful?.) From now on I won?t even put the BBE on the floor. I?ll just set it on the top of my amp and use a short patch cable to hook it up. I don?t plan on turning it off.In truth, this should not be thought of as an effect in the traditional sense. This is important to understand. If you are looking for something that changes your sound drastically when you turn it on and off, this BBE will disappoint you. This is a sutle change and you will need a sound that is close to what you are looking for to start with. When you just need that final push (like ?going to 11?) this is it. People say that it is like taking a blanket off your amp. That is actually a great description. It?s not just a matter of simple EQ. Whatever the BBE does I can?t explain but it really doesn?t matter and I don?t need to understand. All I know is that it is amazing.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is the cure for a bad or slightly off guitar tone. Humans hear high and low frequencies at different volumes and times, and this pedal corrects for it. It can make your shallow, lifeless tone become full and grand with just a click! I use a Gibson Les Paul Jr. through an Orange Tiny Terror Combo with the MXR Fullbore Metal distortion, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano Reverb, and this (BBE Sonic) at the end of my pedal chain and the BBE is the ONLY pedal that is always on from the time I turn the amp on, until I turn it off. You WILL NOT regret this purchase! This is not an effect pedal, it is a tone shaper.
Super Simple and EASY to use!
Great build and sound quality!
A steal at this price!

Ask me a question

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

With the return policy of Musicians Friend, you would be very wise to at least give this pedal a try. If it is not among the best investments you have made in effects pedals, I will be shocked. Having played for more than 30 years, I'm far from a novice when it comes to the many sounds that have been introduced in the guitar effects market. This is a pedal that you will hear a great deal of improvement over any sound your looking for.
This pedal has the ability to use whatever style you play, then add a degree of shimmer (for lack of better word) regardless of which pedal configuration you are using. It is the only pedal I've seen that never needs to be turned off, and is best left on all of the time. Since I have a small recording studio, I try to have on hand as many effecrts as possible. All of my amps are tube, and range from the Marshall JVM410H to 3 Fenders, and a Vox AC15C1. The Sonic Stomp gives me an edge with the clean Twin Reverb, or the high overdrive Marshall.
The quality seems to be that of a tank, and well made in every area. While in can use a 9 volt battery, I recommend a plug in power source such as the built in one on my pedal board. Because this is a pedal that should always be left on, batteries will loose power quickly.
When I look at some of the these pedals going for more a lot of moeny, the cost of this one is well worth every penny.

You Need This Pedal

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

It extended the bass & treble frequencies where ever I used it. Made the output sound high fi. It's sublte, until you turn it off. Then you realize just what a difference it makes. It's an ingenious but simple device. I'm going to use this on all the time.
It doesnt have a lot of features. It's biggest feature is what it adds to your tone.
Strong case, solid feeling knobs & jacks. Looks tidy inside as well.
It works great on distorted or clean tones, humbuckers or single coils. Tube or solid state amps. Made my Acoustic sound great as well. You will use it on everything.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have had my sonic stomp for several years and I guess im not sure what it does. It seems just to add a different tone to my marshall but it just seems to be a waste of space now that I reflect on it. Its way too big for what it does. Seriously why is the case double the size of my other pedals? Anyway I removed it from my pedal board and my sound doesnt seem any different so thats why I am dogging this product.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Picked up the Sonic Maximizer after reading a ton of glowing reviews. My rig consists of a Blackstar amp, all Groove Tube Golds with matching cabinet (Eminence speakers in both). Pedal board is all first rate, Monster Gold cables etc. I am a tone junkie and am continually looking for ways to milk a little more tone out of my system. So I hook up the Stomp thru my effects loop, my other pedals are hooked thru the front. Wow, what a difference. I spent a good two hours comparing effects and amp settings with and without the Stomp. Once you get the gain correct you can really A-B this pedal and get a great idea how well it works. Evens out the highs and lows and gives you a solid sound. Can't really explain it, but it kicks things up a notch...you wont ever turn it off. Sounds very good on the clean channel but works wonders on the high gain side of things. Best $100 you can spend if you are as obsesed with great tone as I am. I love this pedal.

Like a compressor at the front of your chain this is an essental piece of equipment at the end. Two controls Lo Contour & Process make for streamline adjustments. Beautiful retro modern graphics on fire engine red make it eye candy as well.
Sonic Maximizer is right. Simple to use, two dials. Stomp on and hear amazing clarity from any amp. One of those must have pedals.
Nice robust construction. fluid smooth controls. bright blue on-off LED.
Terrific value considering your tone will sound outstanding with such little fuss.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Excellent product. Wish I had bought one years ago.
The sonic stomp really does an amazing job of clarifying and adding sparkle to your sound.
I run it in my effects loop. Like many others I just turn it on and leave it on. The technology used by BBE should be licensed and incorporated by every amplifier manufacturer out there....it's that good. Features are dead simple, just low and high contour usually set around 12:00.
Unit seems well built with a metal chasis and standard off/on switch. BBE is known for high quality gear.
Bought mine off of e-bay for $65.00 but the $99 list price is well worth the money. This is not an effect pedal but a tone enhancer and has become integral to my overall sound. If you want a good tone you should check it out!

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal really works! Great with overdriven amp (I use a Fender deluxe reverb and Visual Sound open road pedal); it makes the treble sparkle and tightens up the bass. Sounds fantastic clean as well. It improves the sound of any rig without any coloration of tone-couldn't ask for more.

I marked it down one point for quality because the rubber pad on the bottom outgasses some noxious/irritating odor. Was going to remove it anyway to attach velcro, but thought I'd mention it.

Very highly recommended!

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is great! It will round out the bottom end of your sound, and it will make everything just that little bit punchier. I now know why every big studio in the world uses one of these for their recordings! When you only have one other pedal in your chain, and run straight into an amp, unless you have alot of cable, the noticable effect will be minimal. However, if you have three pedals (besides this one) or more then the difference will be huge! Also, if you play into PA systems using something such as a Tech21 or a Blackstar HT-Dual (both good pedals BTW) with a little tweaking, you can make it sound as good through the PA as it does through your amp- no more thin, watery sound through the PA!In terms of quility, my only complaint is that the power jack on mine is loose after much plugging and unplugging (I've had it for almost two years now). Other than that, it is built like a tank. For features and value, well, look at it this way; nobody else makes anything like this, and to buy the rackmount would cost you twice as much (plus you have to haul around a rack)!(BTW, I liked this pedal so much, I bought another one for my acoustic rig. It has a 20Hz-20kHz range, so it works for acoustics as well- really fattens up the acoustic sound through the PA without making it boomy.)

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Like others have stated, I can't really explain how this pedal works, I just know that it 'awesomizes' my tone when it's turned on. I bought this thing kind of on a whim when I saw a used one at a local guitar shop. It intrigued me, but I wasn't really expecting anything. Needless to say, this is now the only pedal on my board that is ALWAYS on, and I would definitely replace it if it was ever lost. If you are obsessed with clarity of tone, you need this pedal.

IF I can help the understanding of what this pedal does...it's not an effect...our ears are not perfect and all hear a bit differently. But one thing that does not change is the way bass waves and treble waves travel, and think about it...when you hear a loud car stereo while in your car, what do you hear?...bass...so to the point. this pedal gets the waves coming out of your amp a little tighter...keep at the end of your chain.. better yet to save floor space I keep it back by my amp...and to hear the true quality of this pedal just start with it on so you don't hear the subtle change, play a couple sample of songs clean and distorted then click it off and do the same and you'll never click it off again....it's almost like fixing your ears...and I also found setting the knobs at around the 1 o clock seems to be the sweet spot....I hope this helps to those that have not yet been introduced to sonic maximizers.....

I have used the rack mount version of this device for a decade. I plan to get this smaller board version within the month to integrate it in my pedalboard easier. For $100, please, it is the best $100 you will ever drop on your pedal chain. Sound engineers or studio engineers will want the rack unit available for enhancing the quality of recording or the PA difference will be astounding in clairity, quality and headroom. This is NOT an effect and is not meant to be a typical pedal. Keep the settings about mid maybe a little less on the low as you want it to be transparent without boosting or adding signal. You will never and should never turn it off. Try one and see if you do not shake your head and comment, "it really is like taking a blanket off the speakers."

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

To get the full benefit of the Sonic Stomp (or rack version) BBE recomends feeding it with a line level signal between the pre-amp and amp. In other words, put it through your effects loop rather than in-line with other effects if they are in front of your pre-amp input. If you have your other effects going through your effects loop, the Stomp should be last in line before feeding the signal to the amp.

      New look, same great unit

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I tried a bbe years ago and loved how it sounded. When this stompbox version came out, I immediately bought one. What it actually does is delay your high frequencies slightly so the ear percieves your lows and highs evenly. Experiment with the settings to match your guitar, amp, and speakers. I run it last in my FX loop with the lo contour at 6 and process at 5. My amp is an open back Fender "The Twin" amp. You know, the one with the red knobs from the late 80s early 90s. LOL! They could save some cost by taking the on/off switch off of this unit, because you will NEVER want to turn it off unless someone is sitting in on your gear and you want to sabbatoge their tone! I dinged bbe on quality because the pots seem to be bent a little. The knobs still turn, but the shafts are not straight anymore. I move it around alot in a suitcase with cords, adaptors, etc. It stays out of my pedalboard because I run it on top of my amp, constantly on. This gives me more room on my board for other pedals. Anyway, its been a few years and it still works, so I'm very happy with it.
