OVERVIEW

Improve note definition without the bulky rack unit.

Upgrade everything with Sonic Stomp, the one piece of gear which improves the performance of your whole rig. Whether you're a guitarist or bassist, get ready to be amazed. With Sonic Stomp's proprietary BBE Sonic Maximizer technology, you'll hear your amp cut through the band mix better with dramatically improved note definition in chords and solos. Even with a wall of distortion, the distinct harmonic elements of each note can be heard like never before. Time-based effects take on a level of realism and dimension you never thought possible. And if low-end punch is your thing, you'll discover the Lo Contour control is the ticket to meaty chunk without the mud.

Rack mount BBE Sonic Maximizer processors have been the secret weapon of musicians for years, with each generation of the BBE technology offering more for musicians to discover in their tone. While rack-mount models such as the 482i Sonic Maximizer are a staple for many touring musicians with sophisticated rigs, a rack device isn't practical for many musicians. Enter Sonic Stomp, packing the same BBE technology into a pedal for musicians who prefer simple rigs. Its buffered input happily accepts either the input of your instrument or the output of another pedal (Sonic Stomp should be used last in the pedal chain), making Sonic Stomp as easy to use as any other pedal. Just plug it in, dial the knobs to your taste and enjoy.

Sonic Stomp's application of the BBE technology is just like its big brothers, using frequency-dependent time alignment with integrated amplitude compensation. What's all that about? Simply put, it helps a speaker more faithfully reproduce the signal so more of the nuance and detail is revealed. Sonic Stomp is not an effect but a tool to allow more of your tone to reach the ears of your audience - and yours.

This little device should be on every guitarist's (and bassist's!) pedal board. What's so great about it and what exactly does it do? Well, I'm not an electrical or audio engineer, but what it does to my sound is it takes it from sounding great to sounding twice as great! I've played through a lot of different amps and pedal rigs over the years, tweaking, adding and subtracting different toys to sculpt my sound. It wasn't until I found this thing that I truly found tone nirvana. What do I mean by that? Well, what it does is make your sound more tight and focused. Step on this thing and you'll wonder what happened. Everything becomes clearer, more resonant. No more "muddy" sound. No more stray harmonic overtones. I always thought my tone was good. But once I stomped on this everything that came before sounded like it was coming through a thick wall, dull and lifeless. This is like having your own studio engineer inside a box! With a lot of gain for metal every note and harmonic is distinct and clear without background clutter. With a bit of grit for blues it adds just that little bit of edge to give me that elusive "bite" that I've been searching for. Cleans on a Strat neck pickup are more "swampy/syrupy".

One caveat is that it MUST be used in the effects loop of your amp, preferably at the end of your effects chain for maximum effect. Putting it in front of your amp really doesn't seem to do too much. So if your amp doesn't have an effects loop you may not really want to get this.

I've had this one (I think mine is the previous model) for about three years now. I don't think I still own today most of the gear that I had back then, having gone through job loss and subsequent financial distress required a lot of "downsizing" of the arsenal. But this is one I definitely have held on to. I don't think I can play without it anymore. It's that good!

First thing, I happen to be a fan of BBE's rack mounted products. I bought one of the early rack mounted sonic maximizers, still have it, still use it and it still works great and I have used it for gigging and recording extensively. So when I built my new pedal board (fully loaded PT-Pro with two power bricks), I figured let me get a pedal based sonic maximizer, the rack unit is great, so the pedal should be as good, right?

I'm not totally disappointed with the Sonic Stomp and it does work really well on contouring the low end, but that's all it does. There is no contour feature for the high end like in a rack unit and I think that's where BBE missed the mark. The pedal does need to be at the end of your signal chain or in your amp effects loop, anywhere else and you lose a lot of what this pedal can do. I find that it works better for my Tele's and Strat's than a standard humbucker, but I am very happy with how it improves the tone for my LP Deluxe. I gave it three stars, only because of the no high end contour. The construction is solid, controls are smooth and responsive, the signal is clear and even if you are using a battery, there is no sound degradation, so its a quality pedal, just not as good as their rack unit. You do need to order one to try it at home with your gear, because trying it in a store, doesn't give you enough time with it. I am keeping mine as I have a good use for it and hey, I'm a gear junkie. So like I said, its a Semi-Sonic Stomp.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play through a Carvin V3M tube head and a Carvin 212 Slant front cabinet, I didn't think the sound quality could be any better. I placed the Sonic Maximizer into the heads effects loop set the controls to 12 o'clock. When I swithced the BBE on I noticed an immediate difference. It seems like a slight difference at first but play a few songs then switch it off and it's like you put a blanket on your speaker cabinet. I love it so much I'm buying a rack unit for our PA.

I don't have an effects loop and I'm using it in front of a digital modeling amp.....it gives a more-than-subtle improvement. Cleans become more "tube-like" and jangly while overdriven sounds become more articulate and full. You won't want to turn it off EVER !

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I agree with the reviewer who said the BBE Sonic Stomp works better with some guitars/amps than others. I run a Fender Super Champ X2 and Dimarzio humbuckers. While the Sonic Stomp improved my clean channel tone (which I rarely use), the effect on the modeling channel was very subtle, even with the knobs turned all the way up, and what difference it made was not a noticeable improvement. Someone said this pedal has more impact in an effects loop, this may well be true but my amp doesn't have one. This pedal DID make my el-cheapo 5W practice amp sound better. I recommend trying this pedal out with your rig before buying. I returned mine.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

It's true that the difference between turning it on and off is dramatic. It's also true, though that removing the stomp while on from your chain entirely will improve your sound much more.

It just sucks so much tone that even its improvements when on hardly make up for the damage it does to your tone. I like their rack mount but this pedal is prety bad.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this on a whim, and I'm glad I did! It adds a special something to my guitar's pedal board. As I get new pedals and need to make room on my board, I sometimes consider taking off the sonic stomp. As soon as I try my setup without it I remember why it's been there for so long. It adds a presence and almost 3-dimensional character to my sound. I usually keep the lo contour at about 2 o'clock w/ the process at 9 o'clock. For my rig, turning up the process past noon can get on the harsh side. Anyway, one complaint, without any abuse or hard use, one of the knobs gets really tight when I turn it one way. Kind of lame since it almost never leaves the house and I've never done anything abusive to it.

My warning, you may find it hard to live without after you get it.

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Felt like a kid at Christmas when I opened this baby. Solid feel, nice smell -- and has everything a pedal should have from the get-go: a 9 volt battery AND a 9-volt adapter! And at a very reasonable price to boot. After eye-balling this pedal for a couple of years (mainly because of being intrigued by the honest appraisal: that they really don't know how it works, it just does) -- what put me over the top to buy it, was after researching Tim Farriss of INXS' pedal board, and seeing that he uses this same pedal, I bit. Instantly cleans up any dull sound from any amp, and does exactly what the description says: that it's like taking a blanket off your amp. You can turn both knobs all the way down, and it still brings your speakers to life. Should of bought this one from the start, as it pretty much does what 2 or 3 other pedals COMBINED do. Would've saved me a lot of money. Very nice pedal, at an especially good price.

I play a (cheap) Fender Stratocaster in an old doublewide church using an antiquated sound system. I do use a zoom effects pedal but was not getting the sound I wanted. I added the Sonic Stomp between the Zoom and the di box and the change was astounding....people now actually think I am a decent guitar player

Comments about BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is not an effects pedal. It's a sound enhancement pedal. It brings out the clarity and harmonics of every note played. With just 2 controls it allows you to dial-in the tonal quality according to your taste. I use the settings in the brief manual for 'Clear Guitar' on both my electric and acoustic-electric guitars. Spoke to several players who said that they 'Never Turn It Off". I demo'd this in a music store with a test guitar and amp but didn't get a good impression because it wasn't my rig to start with. When I plugged it into my rig, it was night and day. I'm never turning it off either. It does add small amount of volume boost but that's not its purpose. I like that they ship a 9v battery and a 9v power supply as well. I plan to power it with my pedal board power supply. It was recommended to me by a knowledgable sales person who I know and trust that it should be added to the end of the chain of pedals on the pedal board.
