OVERVIEW

Essential for piezo-equipped guitars.

The Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box gives you an unplugged sound that's rich, loud and electrifying. This amazing little box will make your acoustic guitar sound come to life!

By their very nature, piezo pickups tend to be very bright, with somewhat reduced bass response and warmth. The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with Behringer's proprietary microphone/tube emulation. If you don't want to use the emulation feature, the ADI21 also functions as a superb active DI box. The Blend control allows you to mix the amount of modeled tone with your instrument's normal output. The resulting sound is more natural with smooth saturation.

Armed with an onboard 3-band EQ, with sweepable mids to keep feedback under control, the ADI21 effectively eliminates the harsh harmonics of piezo pickups. The output is laid out on 1/4" TS or balanced gold-plated XLR connectors, which can be used to send a low-impedance signal to the mixing console or straight to tape. You also get a ground lift switch to eliminate annoying ground loop hum problems. You can power this little lifesaver with a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Putting some acoustic glory into your recordings or live performances has never been this easy-or sounded this incredible.

I have a Taylor T5 and a Taylor GA214CE. Both use an under saddle PU that sounds pretty good, but still has that "plinky" piezo sound, even when run through a dedicated acoustic guitar amp (Fender AcoustiSonic). The Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box gets both guitars much closer to sounding like I'm just micing the guitar. Works great with the acoustic amp, but even better, it works just as well directly into the board or a regular guitar amp (I have several; mostly use either Fender SuperSonic22 or Fender Blues Jr). The box is pretty straight forward, just plug in and twiddle the knobs until you get the sound as close to the real acoustic sound as you can. For me, this means dialing back the mids and playing with the treble and bass depending on what system you're running through. Uses either a 9v or wall wart, and has both 1/4 inch or xlr outputs, so it can go into just about any amp or board. I've played several gigs with it and am tempted to buy another for backup, more out of fear that they'll discontinue it than that I'll kill this one as it seems pretty solid. And considering it's about 10 percent the cost of the Taylor preamp, it's a steal.

Best feature by far is the softening of the piezo pickup. The tones are warm (almost tube like), but you will have to use an EQ if you want to truly blend the sound for a fuller, richer tone.

Mine didn't like the 9V wal-wart...smoked a bit, then I disconnected it. Mids are a bit punchy and there is a noted HISS (as is common with most DI units). I used a simple compressor to squash it. Overall, it does a pretty good job for the price. Nothing fancy, just does the job.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

On a limited budget, but didn't want a limited sound. Took a chance on this DI Box as an inexpensive answer to a preamp for my acoustic guitar playing in a large room (Church Sanctuary). Went ahead and bought the power adapter to go with it. The tone this thing puts out is incredible. The sound quality is comparable to a high end fishman preamp used for the same purpose. If your on the fence about this product, DON'T BE! There are some pretty strong opinions out there when it comes to Behringer, but they knocked this one out of the park. Very warm bass tones, punchy mids, and crisp highs. Having the ability to adjust all three directly on the box is awesome. You can stomp the box to eliminate the tube/mic modulator whenever you want/need and it emulates a passive direct box. A little too big to fit the inner compartment of your guitar case, but I would hardly define that as a problem given the performance. Can't wait to use this for recording. Playing live far outperformed my expectations. Simply Outstanding!

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

Needed something to warm up the sound of my Ovation and Guild while performing on a worship team and the Behringer ADI21 does the trick. It had a hard plastic body instead of metal but, it is sturdy and sounds great. Great price, great sound!

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I have only used this unit twice. The good news is it has exceeded my expectations both times. My band mates, and folks in the audience have commented on how much fuller my guitar sounds. I had been having trouble with the guitars natural bass sound coming through the PA, not any more! I'm getting the same time of clarity as when i combine a mic and the internal pickup. For the price, a great buy. ( just wish it had a belt clip. )

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

The unit tapers the treble frequencies of an piezo-installed acoustic guitar, transforming it to a warmer-sounding mic'd acoustic guitar. The pedal enables the user to adjust the mix and other parameters providing a result that is useful and is as described in the advertising literature.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I've wanted something for a long time that would get rid of that annoying piezo quack and give me a warmer sound. But all the other acoustic drivers seemed a bit overpriced though I was afraid that if I bought something this affordable it would be wasted money. After all "you get what you pay for". After reading many good reviews I decided to give it a try. BOY AM I GLAD I DID! This thing sounds awesome. There's no notch filter but there's one on my guitar. Between that and the sweepable mids feedback isn't a problem. The sound is sweet, natural, and warm. I would also like to add that you can use both the quarter inch and the XLR outputs at the same time to send a signal to your amp and to the house system. The biggest complaint people seem to have with Behringer pedals is that they are made of plastic. Well have you noticed how thick the plastic is? Unless you plan on running over them with your car they aren't gonna break. Also I use a power supply with it and haven't experienced the problems others have listed. In fact I accidentally left it plugged in and turned on for 24 hours and it still works fine.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

good sound, easy to use, small footprint. My first outing with it doing a live performance, I needed a notch filter for feedback and it does not have one. The sweepable mid frequency control has too wide a cut for feedback purposes. It is a good unit otherwise.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I needed an acoustic DI box quick and with a small budget for the project. This unit absolutely did the trick. I used the battery option because of the questionable power supply at an outdoor event. The tone absolutely dialed in with just a couple minutes of working the knobs. The footswitch is a little noise and I would hesitate to use this in a small studio or home studio with an open mic while kicking it in. I have a mid-90s Telecaster that got a very nice acoustic-like tones through this box. Just for fun, I ran my Seagull S6 through it for a post-festival wind-down. It gave my acoustic electric a nice full sound and actually helped me overcome a less-than-perfect tone in the house mix. I'm considering getting a second one. At this price, it's an absolute bargain.
