I bought the Bass V-amp 3 years ago. Since then I have reviewed several similar products extensively and have concluded that the V-amp is probably the best product for the money based on features, sound, construction and overall usability. The downsides I have experienced were a memory loss on several occasions. This was remedied by simply replacing the battery and making sure that the battery holder is tight with good contact to prevent the battery from shifting during occasional bumps. For the past 30 years I have owned every gadget from stomp and rack units to bass guitar synthesizers, so what I look for in a device like this are: clean sound, a versatile tone shaping capability, programmability and very important?(MIDI) all in a rack mounted package. I wish more companies would follow that format? some do but not much. I also bought the FCB-1010 for the V-Bass and it makes the unit perform very well. Another thing buyers may want to investigate is that there are user websites that discuss the V-Bass exclusively with a lot of great tips. Bottom line, a great unit even at twice the price.

Quite honestly, I can't believe people are raving about this product. Mine erases the memory after a couple of weeks, after I have spent some time getting decent sounds. It does it time and time again. It drives me up a wall. The other thing is that there is a noticeable delay when changing presets. My take is that the price of this unit reflects its quality. I would stay away from it.

A great Bass pre amp

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I purchase this product a few years ago and have gotten the chance to take it through the paces. One thing I must encourage to also invest in if you are an tour/active musician is a portable rack mount the company Gator makes some nice ones. This will protect the device when traveling. The materials they used for the knobs aren't very strong. The sound you get from this device is up to you. It very customizable; so tweak away. I use a Fender Bassman combo with the Bass V-amp also the FCB1010 with the Vamprom install when I to local pub gigs. When I do larger shows I save my setting and all the above except be Bassman. It well worth the time to read the manual cover to cover and understand the device so you can enjoy your purchase fully.

Not Good for Recording

Pros

  • Could work well live

Cons

  • Terrible for recording

Best Uses

  • Bass rig perhaps

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

Looking back, I don't know why I thought buying this was a good idea. The plan was to record via its S/PDIF out directly to my computer interface. Well, I've tried many different set-ups and tweaked the settings ad nauseum and could never get a good sound. I'm much better off recording the bass dry and processing it after the fact in my DAW. I probably should have tried that first, but alas I mistakenly thought that this could potentially be a really good recording tool.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I recently purchased this amp modeler/preamp and I am pleasantly surprised with its effectiveness and sound quality. Bass effects are almost useless to me, but I get such a good sound with this unit, I can't help be to use it. The only problem I have with the unit is that you are only able to run one effect at a time.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

You want "That" tone, whatever it is? It's in there. You may have to work for it though. This thing is amazingly versatile, whether you are looking for Jamerson's Motown sound, Lemmy's roar, Ellefson's punch or your own unique tone, it can do it. If you want to find it, get the UnoProm, Behringer's editing software and the FCB1010 or you'll hate yourself trying to get there.

This unit really shines in it's amp and cabinet sims, which are impeccable, but like all MFX's/Preamps it must be used properly. The real reason people hate these types of units is that they don't know how to properly use them. If you plug this thing straight into a bass amp you are going to think you wasted your money. You really need to run it into a full-range, flat response amp and cabinet setup. Once you amplify it's output properly you'll never settle for a single voiced amp rig again. With the range of amp and cabinet sims this unit has inside you can play for days, finding useful setup after useful setup. Of course not all will be ones you want to use but they are all good assuming you use some common sense. Running a 10 watt combo into an 8 X 10 cabinet is a recipe for tonal disaster, likewise running an SVT head into a single 8" cabinet isn't going to yield very good results. This thing is going to give you best results if you are looking for tones generated by amps built between the mid-sixties through early 90's. I use it to generate tones suitable for speed metal/thrash for my own purposes and for playing with a warm, classic tone for playing at church. Going out through the XLR into the mains into the PA (after setting up the output properly of course) yields phenomenal results.

The effects are certainly passable but not jaw-dropping. I use the chorus/delay very lightly to good effect, but a very little goes a very long way.

I use this preamp in a rack with a power conditioner, a BBE 362 and a variety of basses with both active and passive pickups.

All in all this rig is worth many times its price tag, but understand you are going to have to put in some work to get the results this thing is capable of. Save yourself some agony and go to talkbass dot com and hunt down CharlieC's threads on configuring this beast and you will be well rewarded. Get it today, thank me tomorrow.

Bass V-AMP PRO

By Brian McCaulley

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I've owned this unit for over two years now. I run it through a Trace Elliot amp and found it to be a better amp modeler than an effects unit, but I rarely use effects. I rate it a 10 because of the bang-for-the-buck. Some may find the effects adequate, (nothing is better than a dedicated pedal), but as a pre-amp, it is nothing short of awesome. I get the sweetest tones from this thing. Surprisingly, the Trace Elliot amp model sux through my Trace Elliot amp, but sounded great through my friend's SVT. (Likewise, the SVT amp model sux through his SVT amp). I highly recommend this unit to everyone.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I bought this guy a few weeks ago because i needed a new pre-amp for my Bass, i just wasn't getting the sound i wanted to get out of the equipment i had at the time. So i bought this guy from here at Musicians Friend, and when it arrived all i had to do was rack mount it, plug it in, spin some knobs to find that deep huge bass sound i wanted, and within seconds i was ready to rock. If your a bass player who is not one of these 'tone guys' and your looking for something that sounds killer with little effort or knowledge about reverbs, compressors and such, this is the pre-amp for you! And for you tone people, this pre-amp allows you to really dial in that tone and effect your going for, the system navigation is fairly intuitive, once you get a feel for the buttons.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I have had my V-amp PRO for two years now, and I have not had one problem with it. Now I will admit the effects, not all of them, maybe half are not all that great. But hey this thing is a pre-amp! You do have to spend some time setting this thing up to what you want, the pre sets are just a starting point and nothing let will set the world on fire until you make them your own.It really gets some life, and some more volume out of my amp.As a bass player what do you want, effects or tone? I'll take tone thank you!

Great Effect Unit

By Tom Kirchner

from New Jersey

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I am Tom Kirchner a bass player from NJ. I researched the V Amp and decided to go with the rack mounted because you get a power cord and other reasons. It really sounds great. I opened for Mountain, Glen Tilbrook, Molly Hatchet, Johnny Winter and all the sound men asked me what the Behringer was. They were skeptical in using the Behringer direct into the PA system. After the set over in every show the sound man and stage crew all said what a great sounding bass sound I got. No noise coming from the unit to the sound board. I only have great things to say about this unit.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

This product is not user friendly. The effects sound really fake even after hours of dialing in different modules. I even bought the foot pedal which was equally disappointing. I sold my at a loss and was glad to get rid of it. Do yourselves a favor and spend the extra bill or so to get a quality product you can depend on.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I owned one and it got stolen, I will buy another. The manual seemed kinda confusing so I did what a lot of do anyway and that is to just start turnin knobs and clicking buttons,It is easy to figure out. Lotsa choices and the sound pretty good. I ran this through a Morgan Monroe Class b Bass amp that was just a total heap of Junk!!! I mean this amp sounded lousy but the V-amp worked wonders and made it sound a lot better and in fact I used in a professional recording setting with no problems.

Lot's for the money...

By BradM

from Trenton, OH

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I use an Alvarez Yairi acoustic with a Martin Thinline piezo fed straight to this unit....the input impedance is high enough that it works really well. The only thing I'm amiss about with this unit is the effects can offer a little more noise to the loop...but, which ones don't??? I really wish the programming was a little more intuitive as I find it takes me too much time to set it up the way I want....wish there was a screen built-in to store a preset name to better identify it. But....really....for the money I paid for this...there is no way I can complain about it...at all. It really has every feature I would want and then some. I use the effects loop with a BBE Max and an Alesis Midiverb4...works great. And I play live feeding the two balanced outputs to our church's Mackie board....absolutely quiet. One thing...this unit REQUIRES a very clean (no hum) signal going into it...anything producing much noise seems to generate some digital noise that's a little mysterious until you figure out the source (an electric I have caused an issue with it). But....this unit is great for playing live and recording, too. I like it a lot.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

Bought the unit and it sounds great. I wanted a versitle bass sound, modeling the Marshall heads in the 60's and 70's as well as Mesa Boogie and Ampeg sounds. It's great because it doesn't need a power adapter. I highly recommend this unit. I use it in the studio and on stage in front of hundreds of people. All the soundmen who see it ask me what it is and how it works. Then they hear it and they all like it. Everyone on the Rock Blues circuit in the New York area say that I have a great sound. I use it with a vintage Acoustic 371 amp.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I recently bought the unit because my Hartke head went down. (After 10 years of faithful service). I'm still going to have it repaired, because The Behringer can't get near the tone. I've had major problems with storing the presets. They don't seem to "stay" when I go back to use them. I hold the button down like the manual says to do, but sometimes when I return to a preset, it s tone is altered. Alsothe presets themselves sound like guitar effects.Too washed out, even when I turn the effects level down. All I really wanted out of this unit for the money, was good tone shaping, and a compressor. But the EQ just doesn't sound that sharp. The compressor works, but at a minimal level of effectiveness. All in all, I wished I had just spent the money on fixing my Hartke head. The price was right, but the sound was WRONG!

Wonder Pre-amp

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

First off I would like to tell the people who complain about the effects to much. Folks this is a pre-amp. The effects on it are for tone not for switching during a song.To tell the truth most of the presets on this amp are really cruddy, except the one on Bank 2-D. That default setting alone can turn your bass into a monster. If you switch the Cabinet to a 70's Modern Hi Gain (Probably a Marshall) and turn the Synth off you can get a really professional High-End,and thunderous Low-End for such a affordable price. This amp alone has made me rethink what I can do on a bass and our band has stopped searching for a Rythym Guitarist because it sounded so good. For those who have it You have to try the 2-D Bank and tweak a little bit. It is the coolest bass sound I've ever heard.

Pure Heaven

By Limitless

from Vegas baby Vegas!

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I decided to buy this to hook up to my Lightwave Systems Saber Hybrid 5 string Bass. My DAW Studio is in another room in my house. But in my master bedroom I have a big couch with some effects racked for bass next to the couch and bed. So if a get a musical inspiration while slumbering I can jump right out of bed and play something. With a Lightwave Bass I can turn the magnetic pickup off and just use the optical pickup. With optical pickup and a preset I made in first three minutes of powering up my Bass V-Amp Pro, I am in heaven with this unit. I played for two hours on this one self made preset. Not a trace of feed back are hum, this unit compliments an Optical pickup system in spades, and with the ability to run a digitl signal right out to a recorder I can lay down some chops for transfer to the Music room later on.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

i use this with my ampeg svt 3 pro. It took some time to sort is out but once i figured it out it really brought up my tone. I don't use the built in distortion/over drive because they all sound very sharp unless using them straight out of the v-amp (as in home recording or just jamming through a PA or headset). The FX are kind of generic but one would expect that from a multi effects processor. the compressor is just what i needed, simple and easy just turn a knob and there you go. like everyone says the manual is some kind of mess. once you sort that out it becomes very easy to adjust. i love the fact that once you find a setting you like just press and hold and it is saved. the convenience factor is high. i would suggest racking it as it is very light and seems fragile. i would recomend it because for the price it comes at a good value.

Acoustic guitar players rejoice!!!!

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I use this unit for live and recorded acoustic guitar playing. I've looked long and hard for A pre amp that would give me A really natural sound and this thing is it. Sounds just like my guitar when I'm not plugged in but without the hassles of having to mic my guitar. I've tried many other "acoustic pre amps" and "acoustic effects units" but they all color my sound and make it sound real electric. Finally the search is over. And as for ease of use, I found it very easy to operate. The booklet can be confusing but if you've ever used A pre amp before you'll have no problems and if you're new to this stuff. My son got one for his bass and never even read the instructions just went right to it. Piece of cake. Do yourself A favor and look into this unit.

Comments about Behringer Bass V-AMP PRO Rack Modeling Preamp:

I've used this live and for recording and I'm completely happy with the sound I'm getting. I've played many of the "models" simulated and the reproduction is excellent. The amount of control you have to adjust your sound is incredible, reading the manual is a MUST, it's not intuitive but it's not impossible either. A couple of drawbacks: 1. One of the LEDs didn't work when I recieved it, it doesn't affect the operation at all but it'll have to go back to get fixed. 2. Unless you have a midi foot controller you can't chain multiple effects, and the PRO version DOES NOT come with a controller. Overall, bang for the buck you can't beat it.
