OVERVIEW

Surprisingly compact, astoundingly powerful and responsive.

The 15W Blackheart Handsome Devil Tube Amp Head was designed and prototyped in a one-car garage in Austin, Texas by none other than amp savant, Pyotr Belov. The BH15H Handsome Devil amp evokes classic tube tones more than reminiscent of the great American and British amplifiers - the plug and play workhorses that laid the foundation for rock 'n' roll guitar tone starting in the '60s. Just like its predecessor and little brother, the Little Giant 5, the BHE Handsome Devil is overbuilt to last with features and components you'd expect on a hand-built, much more expensive amplifier.

Features dual power modes allowing the gods of rock to dial in responsiveness and headroom in either 15W or 7W output. Separate Master and Level controls put both awesome power and responsibility in the unwashed hands of mankind. 3 Bands of well-tuned EQ make for nearly infinite voicing. From big fat overdrive to plucky, just-about-to-squeal if you hit me a little harder grease, the Handsome Devil covers classic tube tone with as few knob turns as possible through a well thought out set of features in a tank-tough package.

As expected, you get the simple elegance and robust component specs that mark BHE's designs. From 1W, carbon-film resistors in the signal path to beefy, double sided pcb with 2 oz. traces, 16 gauge, precision folded and welded chassis and mutli-ply, classically joined cabinetry, Blackheart is as serious about quality as they are about tone.

Perfect Practice/Gig Amp

By Caryn Skopec

from Florida

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

Smokin' amp.
You will hear what you have been trying to get with all the pedals, without the pedals.

Very versitle, great for practice in 7 watt mode, gigging in 15 watt mode.

I play clubs and parties mainly, so I don't want earsplitting stage volume.
I get just the right amount of stage volume through a 2X12, and can get real tube
overdrive, sustain and warmth without relying on pedals to simulate the real thing.

But it does pedals just fine, and I do use reverb, delay, overdrive, fuzz...all good.
Playing mostly covers requires some variety of sounds.
For overdrive and distortion, just turn down the gain a bit and crank the main volume,
use your guitar volume and you are set.

I've played a lot of expensive junk these days, this amp is just the opposite.
I now have two and both are my favorite pieces of gear.
Obviously a well received amp by almost every person who has tried it.
I'm just putting my qiuck two cents in.

Built like a tank. Compact.
Classic, beautiful looks. Badge is 3-D and very cool.
Perfect for practice in pentode, giging in triode.
4, 8 and 16 ohm outs.
Work of art.
Solid.
Heavy duty.
Excellent value, priced right.

Well Worth The Money

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I recently purchased this amplifier and I could not be happier. I was in the market for a new amplifier and the choices were mind-boggling. I was considering a few different solid state units, but really wanted a tube head, and eventually wound up with this one. I had read many reviews about the Handsome Devil and almost all were positive, so in the end, I purchased it because it was in my price range and fit the bill for what I wanted. I have it mated to a Crate FW120 4x12 slant cab and my main workhorse/practice guitar is a Jay Turser Telecaster copy, and it sounds really good through this amp. The construction is very solid, the product is very attractive, and it is a no-frills easy-to-use tube head with all the typical things you would expect in a head of this type. It has settings for bass, mid, and treble while also having an adjustment for drive and presence. Other than being switchable from 7W to 15W, that's pretty much all you get. And it's really all you need to get a lot of great sounds you want. I am using the 16 ohm setting on my cab and head and I am VERY pleased with the results. On the 7W setting you get a good clean tone, but flip it over to 15W and crank the drive and you get a great, thick, warm growl that just makes you want to keep playing. The only downside with this amp I can see is that it really just isn't loud enough to be played in a medium to large venue without being mic'd up. After all, it's only 15W. But if you are playing small venues or even medium sized clubs, it will put out all you would need for most situations as long as you have a decent cab of some type. This amp is really well suited to playing blues and classic rock or any type of music where you are looking for a good overdrive sound without a tremendous amount of distortion. Where this amp really shines is in the mid and high tones, they are crisp, solid, and very pronounced. The bass area is a little light, it could be heavier, but it gets the job done. If your band has a bassist you're all set, if not and you carry the bass tones as a rhythm player you might be a little disappointed as the mid and treble will easily outshine the bass tones. The drive will not get as wild or fuzzy as a Marshall but seems to have a warmer and richer sound even cranked all the way. With the construction of this head, I expect that it will last a long time and will be reliable. Blackheart has a reputation for making high quality equipment, and based on my experience I would say that it's true. If you are in the market for a solid, predictable, warm sounding tube head with moderate to good output and you don't need or want a modeling head or a lot of preset effects, look at this unit. I don't think you'd be disappointed. Try it. If you do, you'll probably end up buying it because for the sound you get and what you'll pay, this thing is certainly hard to beat. Good job, Blackheart.

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

Now that i removed the fruity logo off the front and replaced the tubes, i absolutely love this amp. I use a tube screamer and a holy grail reverb in the front and thats it.... for now. this amp has great vintage tube tone and will not dissappoint.

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

i've had this head for 4 or 5 days now. my solid state behringer fried and it was time for a tube. the blackheart seemed like the best deal. i'm running it through a kustom 4x12 with celestions and it sounds pretty great. what i like is that it's simple, not many frills. just what i wanted. it's got the standard bass, mid and treble frequency knobs along with presence, drive, and of course volume. i recommend running a pedal to it to acheive the real tone you want, but it's got that tube sound that solid state amps just can't get. there's also a switch to go from 7v to 15v which is a very nice feature. if you've never had a tube head, spend the extra 50-100 bucks and get this one.

Got the Prototype

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I had e-mailed the Blackheart website about a month and a half ago asking when these puppies were coming in cause I had one on order. They were unbelievably cool. They asked if I'd like to try the prototype and they would mail it to me to try out. Well they did and I connected it to my Vox V212BN cab and it produced the warmest, clearest and richest sound I have ever heard. It is definetely a poor man's Vox with a rich man's tone. I was getting a AC30 head to go with this cab but I don't need it. The only drawback is it has no standby and effects other than a drive but for the price you can't ask for much more. It take effects boxes very well. Oh and it's built like a tank. Great for Blues or English Rock. It's not a Heavy Metal amp.

Great amp to voice for HARP!

By d0Hqk._VL

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I got a great buy on my BH-15H head w/12" speaker cab. Got it barely used from a hobbyist that had overbought on gear.Looking at specs before buying, I could see the possibilities for a decent to great harp amp at a good price.Sure enough, the Chinese tubes were WAY too bright for my purposes. I pulled all, and after some experimentaion used NOS RCA 6BQ5's, then put in triple mica GE 6201's ( milspec 12AT7's ) in the pre-amp slots.Mellow, Chicago sound with just enough gain before breakup and NO feedback! The pentode/triode switch is terrific! At 7W, has that warm Big Walter fatness. At 15W, sounds most like Butterfield I am aware of.I also modded the interior speaker cab to "round the corners" with insulation and installed a beam blocker. No need to flip speakers, then. The lack of features is actually preferable for harp players, although reverb would be nice.

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

This amp is a godsend. I finally get a huge tube tone without peeling paint off the wall. If you need more gain that this has to offer, get an OD stompbox like back in the day and you're set. Tha basic tone of the amp is really good, so it's a great start to get a great tone.

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I recently purchased the Blackheart 15w Handsome Devil, I am impressed. I picked up a Little Giant a while back, and was disapointed in the lack of power, the Hansome Devil has no such issues. I usually play a 50w Marshall, and this thing is at least, as loud if not more so. The best part is, it is much more usable power. The clean headroom in the 15w (pentode) setting is truly impressive. I play mostly oldies and blues, and I like to set the amp pretty clean, and get drive from my, Z Vex Box Of Rock, when needed. This little amp seems to have it all for what I do. It will definately get crunchy as well. Excellent product!

Glad they talked me into the exchange

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I received my Handsome Devil & plugged it into a 4-10 Marshall, it was muddy with very low power. I was very disappointed. Gonna return it but a tech talked me into an exchange. So glad. This amp is just what I've been looking for. Great tone, tight low end, plenty warm enough & sounds great through my pedalboard. Gonna be my main amp at all of the gigs I play.

Comments about Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil Series 15W Tube Amp Head:

I bought this Blackheart BH15H Handsome Devil 15W Tube Amp Head a few months ago and i use it mainly for recoring. I have gigged with it a few times at smaller venues when my Peavey 6505 would have been too much of a hassle. A lot of reviews don't answer a few questions like the loudness of this amp or if you can effectively gig with it. If you're going to gig with this amp and don't use effects, you're good to go as long as it's miked. If you use effects, since it lacks an effects loop, your tone will suffer. I used it with an old fender 2x12 and it sounded a little warmer than the blackheart 1x12. If you change out the tubes and put in some JJ's or some GT's and it'll have a little more punch and warmth. This is a very good little amp and great for recording as well as practicing and gigging in small venues like bars and clubs.
