OVERVIEW

Tube-driven metal tone built for the studio or practice.

The Blackstar HT1MC 1W 1x8” combo is a stripped-down, tube-driven metal monster that you can actually play without drawing the wrath of your neighbors. It can handle tones from classic British heavy metal to modern U.S. scooped high gain, and all sonic places in between.

Its two-channel design (Clean and Overdrive) features easy-to-adjust controls, presenting just four knobs: Volume, Gain, Reverb and EQ via Blackstar’s patented Infinite Shape Feature that gives infinite adjustment over your tone characteristics. Couple that with a rugged construction, true tube power through one ECC83 and one ECC82, stereo reverb, stereo aux. line in and external speaker output — and this is a potent tool created to melt faces, but without the public-nuisance charges.

FEATURES
  • 1W tube power
  • Two channels: Clean and Overdrive
  • 1x8” speaker
  • Reverb
  • Patented Infinite Shape Feature
  • Stereo MP3/line input
  • Speaker emulated / headphone output
  • External speaker output, 4-16Ω
  • Metal speaker grille
  • Tubes: One ECC83; one ECC82

I want to preface this review by saying that I do not play much metal, nor am I even a particularly large fan of metal music. But I was interested in regular version of the HT-1 for a low-wattage home play tube amp, and couldn't justify the cost. Enter the HT-1 Metal Edition, and Musician's Friend's sale! This amp has not disappointed. The clean channel is useful for much more than metal. Since it is a British-voiced amp, you can actually get a boxy sort of vintage twang out of it on some settings. There is decent amount of clean headroom, but this amp is more designed to create tube saturation or even high gain at bedroom volumes. So if you are looking a good clean tone to fill up your basement at home, you may not want this as your only amp. The ISF control is interesting, but I probably would have preferred a real tone knob, or even better a Bass/Treble set. The speaker is 8" but sounds fuller/darker than most of its size. I thought at the sale price, this was just too good of a value to pass up. The HT-1 is moderately popular, but I think people are passing on this one unfairly because they assume it is just a high gain monster. But it functions more like a traditional rock/blues amp on the clean channel, and even the drive channel is more of a heavy distortion than a one-dimensional "scooped" concept of metal tone. If you're realistic about what this amp can and cannot be at this size and wattage, I think it's an extremely fun little amplifier.

(I'm attaching a picture below comparing the size of this amp to a Vox Pathfinder 15. Both of them have 8" speakers, yet the HT-1MC is almost half as large! Note - the solid-state Pathfinder is 15 watts and also quite a bit louder than the HT-1MC).

I know this amp is discontinued, but I wanted to mention a few things
about this amp if some one is looking for a review.
I have had this amp for over a year and a half, and have to say its not very good stock.
It has more gain then any metal head would ever need lol. It starts to break up like late 70`s marshall
at 1 on the gain. I seldom go past 1 o clock. The clean channel is pretty good for such a little amp .
Now, to make this little amp much better then meh, I added a celestion 8/15 upgraded the tubes (mullard 12ax7 in the preamp and a groove gold tube 12u7 in the power section).
These simple and easy to do things make this little sucker sound very, very and the celestion I swear increase the volume out.
I use this amp to jam with a buddy. I use the emulated out into his pa. Sounds good, works well.
So in summary its a 3 til you add new tubes and a speak then I would say 5 after the fact

Comments about Blackstar HT Metal Series HT1MC 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo w/Reverb:

Good price for an amp with tubes!

Great if you need a bedroom amp or stick it in your office and play during lunch/company picnic you're avoiding.

Don't expect to use this at a jam session unless you have a bigger speaker to plug this into. It barely keeps up with a drummer.

I would have preferred a real three knob equalizer versus the single knob ISF equalizer.

I found the overdrive channel is messy and unuseable if the gain is past 25%. My MXR Smartgate didn't help as much as I would've hoped.

Used it with a custom guitar from Zeal 7-string/alder body/standard tuning/EMG 81-7 in the bridge position. Was able to get a decent Metallica tone without pedals.

Comments about Blackstar HT Metal Series HT1MC 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo w/Reverb:

The blackstar HT1MC is an amazing tube amp for the cost and size! about the size of a couple of cereal boxes, it's little speaker can get pretty loud for 8 inches! Two problems I have found with this amp: there is only 1 knob for EQ, which is very limited opposed to other amps, and the second problem I have with it is the speaker. It sounds muddy, and horrible. IF you have another cabinet, this thing will blow your mind! I plugged into my Blackstar 10 inch cab with a celestion and got amazing tones! Good amp for the price, but it has limitations!

Comments about Blackstar HT Metal Series HT1MC 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo w/Reverb:

Excellent little amp for bedroom level playing and for recording.

For recording I run it derect through a Focusrite 2i2 into an iMac with GarageBand. It sounds amazing!

The 8" speaker in the combo doesn't handle the bassiness at moderate to higher volume settings. It could really use a 3 band EQ to help loose a little more bass. I did run it through my 2x12 cabinet and it sounded great! I'm guessing a 4x12 would be great too. Although I haven't tried that.

In case anyone was wondering. This amp is NOT loud enough to gig, unless you run derect. Which is understandable. It's not what this little guy was designed for.

I definitely don't regret this purchase. I'd buy it again if needed. I highly recommend it.

This amp sounds incredibly good with surprisingly crisp cleans and excellent gain levels. I put a nice Mooer Ana Analog Delay in front of it and you can pretty much dial into whatever tone you desire with the ISF control. This is by far the best money I have ever spent on home use equipment. I will add Blackstar's HT112 to enhance the sound in the future.

This is a definite much have!

Received as promised. Notice not many reviews on this amp. This is a under the radar amp. The price doesn't reflect the quality. I jumped on this offer. Even though it's high gain amp, it performs beautifully in clean mode. Warm and crisp. Clean, blues, rock, its there for ya. Wow, it can get load if needed. Nice sound from headphone output. Wish it had a mid eq for distortion channel, because it gets wickedly grungey fast. Da, its a high gain amp. Clean channel doesn't need it. Belt out some licks and scales on this lil monster. Will update after connecting to 4x12 cab.

I was really impressed with this amp when I first got it. As the honeymoon period wore off I found myself wanting more gain. The stock 8" speaker is sub par at best but I run into a 2x12 cab and it really opens up the sound. I swapped the stock 12ax7 for a mesa and it woke up the controls a bit but still never turn the gain past 9 oclock, you'll just get mud. It was on sale for 180 and at that price it is a 5 star deal but if they want 300 I wouldn't recommend it as wholeheartedly, for that price you could get an amp with a real eq section. Still, it is a fantastic piece of equipment for what it is.

I was searching for a good tube practice amp. Originally, I wanted the Blackstar HT 1R combo but, when I noticed the Blackstar HT Metal 1R combo on sale at almost 50% off at MF, now was an easy decision.

I have been able to emulate the settings from HT Metal combo to my regular rig minus the effects.
I sometimes use an external cabinet which, dramatically improves the sound.
The settings are used with an Ibanez RG, with Dimarzio JS pups.
        Settings:
        Gain @ 12 o'clock, max gain if ever @ 3 o'clock
Volume varies, also able to adjust sound from the guitar volume and tone controls
        EQ @ 1 o'clock
        Reverb @ 10 o'clock

I was looking at the Blackstar Metal 1 watt head and the Randall Diavlo 1 watt head as well as several pedals to get that metal tone just for fun in my bedroom studio. I mostly play jazz and blues but I like Megadeth, Metallica as well as a lot of the young guys I see on YouTube and love classic metal like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, et al. I saw the deal on the Blackstar Metal 1 watt combo (with built-in reverb) and couldn't pass it up. It was about the same price as a good pedal! The reverb is very good on this unit as is the speaker, and I can get a good sound all the way from clean to rip-your-head-off Metal. I was going to use the speaker out to run it through my 12" Vintage 30 but I don't even feel like I need to. Of course it doesn't sound like a 100 watt head through a 4x12, but you can't expect that for this price. I'm a big fan of small tube amps and love to pick one up on the cheap. Since getting this one, I don't even use my Vox AC4 or Fender Champion. This little guy is my new favorite amp. Thank you Blackstar and Thank you Musician's Friend!

Comments about Blackstar HT Metal Series HT1MC 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo w/Reverb:

This amp is my favorite to use at home because it gets real tube overdrive at a volume that is just loud enough, but not too loud. That seems to be pretty hard to do with a tube amp. If you want to get your overdrive from the amp and not a pedal at a volume you and your neighbors can live with this is THE amp to get. To extend the headroom on the clean channel I put an EHX Soul Food in front of it and set it up as a clean boost. Works great. This amp loves a tele or strat on the clean channel and it is wonderful with my ES-335 on the dirty channel. BTW don't let the "Metal" name fool you. This is a very versatile amp that can do it all from clean to hard rock and everywhere in between.

Awesome small tube amp. As a singer/songwriter mostly folk rock I can get all the tones I need out of it plus useable reverb and I will never use the metal settings. I feel I got the deal of the year.

real simple not as distorted at high levels as a tube amp should be. And I should know I own over 10 amps

This is my first tube amp and so far I'm loving it. Really suprised me how powerful an amp this size could be. I am really impressed with the quality from Blackstar. Lots of great features packed into a small package. There is also the option of pluging the amp into a cabinet and mp3 port. it's perfect for anyone who wants a nice pure metal tone. The sound is very clear even with heavy distortion. What's really awesome is that you could definitely record with this amp mic-ed up or pluged into your computer. Overall real bang for your buck. At this price I'd snag one up as soon as possible. Trust me I'm on a budget and this is quite a deal at 189.
