Once You Understand It - It's Great!
I have never had so much fun playing through a solid state amp in my life!
It really has the authentic feel and rich tonality of playing through a tube amp. I'm impressed.
It reacts like a tube amp when using the volume knob on your guitar.

First: This is not a loud amp by ANY means!
20 watts in a solid state (transistorized) amp is not loud enough to play with even a quiet drummer.
This is the perfect bedroom, apartment or quiet/headphone amp.

Second: To get the most out of this amp you need to install the software to access all the features and settings.
The software is free and available on their website for Mac & Windows.
This can be tricky. To help avoid any problems do the following:
1. Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Blackstar Insider Application.
2. Make sure you have the latest Adobe Flash & Microsoft Silverlight installed BEFORE installing Blackstar Software
3. Make sure you have Microsoft NET Framework version 4.5 installed (or it will not work.)
4. Restart your computer and then install the Blackstar Insider Software.
5. Hook up USB cable, connect amp to computer, start Blackstar app and UPDATE THE FIRMWARE.
The App will not work properly unless you have the latest version firmware. This is done through the Blackstar app.
Make sure you do not turn off or interrupt the firmware update.

Once I got it all working & tweaked it turned out to be a keeper!

PLACE AMP ON THE FLOOR FOR THE BEST SOUND!
I have read some comments about placing the amp elevated or on a desk. I disagree!
Check it out for yourself. It sounds fuller and wider on my carpet in any room!

This amp has a great feel and notes ring out easily with full tone, attack and dynamics.
I doubt the 40 watt version will be much louder, a bit perhaps, but the speakers are 6.5", which is about 1.5" larger than the 5" speakers that are in the 20-watt amplifier and it may hold the bottom a little better.

OD Channel Problems - Disappointed

Worked great at first. However, now on both OD channels, the sound cuts out. Started happening after a couple months of use. Very disappointed.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

When I first purchased this amp, I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was in the market for a small portable practice amp that I could tote up and down stairs in my home without killing my back (Unlike my Fender Deluxe). When it arrived, I plugged in and was very pleasantly surprised. This little guy sounds REALLY good. All of the presets sound excellent, the on-board effects are all usable and the volume that comes out of it is astounding (especially the amount of low end from a 2x5" speaker setup). Plugged in to your computer, you can really add a whole new tonal variety through tweaks and patch downloads. Along with my Fender Deluxe, I also own a Mustang III and I have to say that this little guy puts it to shame in terms of tone and quality of sound (stereo effects are very very nice on the blackstar). It works great for practicing and recording. Overall I have to say that this is a great little amp, not just for the money, but period. With all of the effects, the quality of tone and how amazing jamming to your Ipod sounds in stereo, you really can not go wrong. Blackstar makes some really great amps, and entry level or not this thing is no exception. Kudos Blackstar for making an amazing little solid state wonder that is a blast to play on. Give it a try, it is a great purchase especially at this price point.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

The Blackstar ID:Core 2x10 is great amp! It is louder than it looks and is perfect for that portable amp or those that live in a small living space like an apartment or in a bedroom. The Stereo or wide stereo is fantastic with the sound almost surrounding you. The lack of true EQ is annoying at first but once you work with the Insider software it gets better. The presets are pretty good, but can be manipulated with the software. Lots of effects for the size of the amp. Think sound and power of Blackstar with the amount of effects from the Vox Valvtronix. Great tube warmth with the clean channels that I have actually plugged in a distortion (Blackstar DISTX) pedal and crybaby, it sounds fantastic. Just because it comes with all the effects that a guitar player needs doesn't mean you shouldn't add or couldn't add your own. Perfect for that beginner to that professional that needs a practice/warm up amp on the road. Blackstar got another part of the amp market with the release of these little amps!

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

Since the Air Force is moving me to Korea later this year I was on the lookout for a nice practice amp to take with me. I needed something that wouldn't take up a lot of space, yet I wanted a real amp, not a mini amp (although I did look at the 3W Blackstar Fly and was very impressed). I have been blown away by my Blackstar HT Club 40, and after doing a bunch of research and comparison I thought I'd go with the Blackstar ID Core 20. I couldn't be happier. This amp is small but LOUD! I took it out to the garage for an initial jam and this thing kicks! The crunch and distortion settings rock right out of the box (with a little tweaking I was able to get a sound very similar to its big brother) and the clean settings are nice and sparkly, just the way I like them.

This amp is loaded with a bunch of digital effects which I don't need right now, but I do intend on messing with them later.

I love the fact that this is a stereo amp. You can use it as a compact stereo system for BBQ's, parties, etc. or jam along to your MP3's in all of their stereo glory via the MP3 input jack.

The ID Core 20 also has an input jack for an optional footswitch (which I had to purchase from another music gear website since for some reason MF doesn't carry it) which is a nice feature for an amp this small.

The emulated lineout/headphone jack comes in handy as well.

Bottom line, I love this amp, and I would highly recommend it!

One word of caution to buyers and a shame on you to Blackstar-This amp comes with a one page start up sheet that basically tells you where to plug in your guitar and how to turn the amp on and that's it. I had to look around online for an instruction manual (which were a pain to print off) for the amp and I had to also print off the instructions for the Insider modeling technology that goes along with it. It would be really nice if Blackstar included these with the amp. It's a little thing, and the lack of instructions would not keep me from buying this amp again or recommending it but I wish I had known what to expect ahead of time.

When I plugged into this amp, I was sold. The stereo separation is VERY impressive. The amp sounds great with or without effects. The 5" speakers sound much larger than they are. I've been playing for 25 years and practice amps have really come a long way.

Way to go Blackstar! You guys nailed it with the Core Series.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

This is the absolute best-sounding amplifier I've ever heard in this price range. Yes, it's small, but it gets quite loud, and the stereo sound is simply amazing. The clean channels are distortion free and have a bright yet mellow sound; the tube-emulating channels are warm and respond well to fluctuation in pick attack; and the distortion channels are think and heavy, completely blowing away any stand-alone metal pedal I've used. I'm completely impressed. With the various effects, combined with the 2-speaker stereo sound, the sound is so wide you can't even pinpoint where it's coming from. My only complaint would be the Insider software, and that's because they don't support Linux (it's based on SilverLight, which is Microsoft-based, bloated, and buggy). That's probably not a deal breaker for 99.9% of users, but it irks me, probably because I write software for a living, but I digress. Overall, this amp gets an A+ rating.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

35 years of playing - I've owned a lot of gear.

I bought this to use mainly as a light and portable travel amp. I also bought the tone link bluetooth dongle for streaming audio. Works like a charm and sounds great. Tried the Marshall Code 25 and was not all that impressed - this little amp sounds great for what it is and is very versatile. Very jangly Fender tones or searing distortion for heavier styles of playing - covers both well. Very responsive to pick attack. I might have to look at the higher wattage model for the house if my VOX Valvetronix ever dies - nice to have a SS modeling amp around when you don't want to fire up the big rig.

I'm new to this game. Just learning to play guitar. I was looking for a modeling amp that would help the process and keep up with me as I learn and progress. After much research, mainly reviews from various websites, I choose this amp and it has been great so far. Quality of sound is excellent and consistent all the way through from low to high levels. I haven't scratched the surface of the all the features and options but look forward to growing into them, though it seems extremely versatile. The "stereo" effect from the 2 smaller speakers is nice and I was able to hear the difference when I tried it out against the other similarly priced & powered modeling amps. It's plenty loud enough for my living room.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

The ID:Core 20 is a small amp that has some big expectations to live up to – and boy does it deliver! It's hard to imagine what else you could want from a small amp. Of course, the most important aspect of any amp is the tone. The ID:Core 20 goes from sparkling cleans to full on distortion, but never loses its musicality or responsiveness. The Super Wide Stereo creates an immersive sound that makes you want to keep playing. All this is good, but when you add USB connectivity an mp3 input programmability and free Insider editing software, you can't go wrong. It's definitely great value for money. Well done Blackstar – this one's a winner!

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

This was a replacement amp for the light weight portable VOX VX2 that stop working. I chose the Blackstar, my first, because the stereo sound was impressive, and I liked the effects and the control settings. I was surprised at the sound quality and volume this amp puts outs. The effects are good and you can get some great tones. As a composer, this amp allows me to discover new sounds and compose guitar riffs and songs with easy. I love the way you can get interesting sounds, with a great stereo effect, that has depth and warmth, or an edge of distortion to rock. The stereo output is key to this amp for the sound quality.

I was looking for a small amp that I could use for my small home studio. This amp has some great sounds and the ability to expand your sound by downloading patches from the website. My only issue so far is that I'm having trouble with it showing up on my computer (when recording with my audiiobox). Great little amp for the price!

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 20W 2x10 Stereo Guitar Combo Amp:

                            It's all about value.
For the price of a pedal,
you get a nice little practice amp loaded with features.

No, it's not a Marshall stack,
nor should you expect it to sound like one.
Take the time to dial it in,
plug in your mp3, and practice practice practice.

For me, the sweet spot is less gain,
as it gets a bit buzzy.
                            Same with the FX,
less is more. Just use them to sweeten the sound.
The stereo effect is nice as well.
Time will tell if it holds up.
Black star support in England has been very good about answering my questions (Thanks Tom)

Black star should include the USB cable,
and maybe even the 3.5 cable
or at least make it clear that it's not included.

Musicians Friend has always provided me with great service,
and that remains true with tis purchase.

You have many choices for a budget modeling practice amp
and your personal preference will play a big role in your satisfaction.

Let me finish by saying that even 10 years ago,
such an amp for the price point did not exist
                            so do some research,
                            compare brands,
and maybe this could be the perfect little amp for you as well.

Bought this amp and during its two day trial, there isn't a thing this amp cant do. Don't let its small size fool you. Great sound almost like it's a professional amp. Great distortion for Slayer yet amazing mellow sound for Pearl Jam. Anyone looking for a first amp or even a great toy should seriously consider this guitar.
