Fun amp, wanted a light solid-state modeling amp to use at home and at small gigs and I have a speaker cab to use with it. Innovative controls and ability to tweak via computer is good. Effects seem pretty good. Sounds is pretty good, especially the dirtier rock sounds and chimey cleans. However, there are issues that mean that I will probably return it. BTW, I have several tube amps and have been playing electric guitar for many years.

Issues: Headphone output not working. Case materials seem cheap. Many reviews outside Musician's Friend seem to indicate that quality is not good... various failures experienced. Lack of EQ is a problem... makes it impossible from knob to dial down treble for jazzy tones. I wanted an amp that will give me the rock sounds but also decent jazz and blues sounds without spending a fortune. Seems to me it should be possible, but nearly all these modeling amps seem to totally ignore jazzy tones and only cover rock sounds. Overall somewhat harsh tone; I don't find it to be very warm at all.

Caveat: I have not tried to tweak via software, maybe possible to get jazz tone that way, but considering the headphone output not working, just that alone is a problem. Also am not using stereo, so that might help.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 40W Guitar Amp Head:

This is a solid state 40 watt head with stero output to speakers, reverb, delay, and effects. I like the ease of use and the sound of this amp. I play it through a pair of Laney 1x12 speakers, and it sounds very good. Can not comment on the editing program because I have not used it.

I also have the ID core 10 watt combo. That combo comes with small speakers which lacks bass. I like it the 40 watt head because you can connect it to the speaker of your choice, and get adequate bass from it.

One downside of this amp is the fact it does not have a true equilzer. The ISF control does not change the sound significantly. The other thing I do not like is the fact the power supply transformer is outside the amp. The power supply cords are not heavy duty, and can get damaged easily.

The amp has adequate power for practice at home, studio use, or small to medium gigs.

The head did not come with a foot switch.

In my previous review, I hadn't tried to use the Headphone/Line Out jack! As a previous Review, had stated, the 'phones/line out jack doesn't work! I had returned one, to M.F. for this reason. They, M.F. sent me a replacement (quickly As usual, excellent service! However, has the same problem! I am beginning to think that they got a 'batch' of them, with this problem. However, At the price I paid, with Points, and a M.F. "Store Credit" I had, It's still a great deal! The amp has great tone, in the Clean settings, and really "Kicks" in the Crunch/Overdrive settings! I've been trying to get an answer from BlackStar -{marketed by KORG, in the U.S.A.}, I'm NOT gonna call "Merry Ol' England", for an answer! The non-functional 'phones jack, is not a deal-breaker for me. I have at least a Dozen other amps. I'll keep trying for a solution from Korg!

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 40W Guitar Amp Head:

This little Giant , is powerful enough for Normal Gigs!! Normal club gigs do not require hundreds of watts of Power! I played "the Road" for over 10 yrs. and 30+ yrs local! I was not in a LOUD Band/Group! Classic Rock, Top 40, and Country. whichever the gig demanded! However, If the 'Bar Flies' can't talk to each other W/O raising their voices, at all, they Gripe to the Manager! We had the 'Big Stuff' Equipment Wise, but almost never go to turn it up past '4'. The Clubs wouldn't allow it! Save yer Back and don't haul the Big Guns you can't turn up anyway! This Blackstar 40 watt amp is plenty big enough for Home, Jams, small Lounge gigs! Remember, Almost all the 50's early 60's tunes were played and recorded on 'Fender' . Bandmaster, Bassman, Concert, [40 watts] and Super Reverb amps.[60watts] Only the Beatles and a few others had the Big Vox Super Beatle ,and Fender Dual Showman Amps! Most of us 'Small Fry' groups had small Fender, Gibson, [the Lucky/Rich Kids] and we Peons had Supro, Danelectro, Silvertone, Airline, Univox etc. amps! So, if you aren't gonna Play Stadiums, the Blackstar 40 watt Head, or Combo ROCKS!

This head sounds good- download and twaek presets from online library and has no problem powering 2 1x12 or 2x12 cabs to a good volume. Only major complaint is you can only save presets with same voice and I only use super crunch and od1 and od 2 meaning I only get three presets!!! External power supply is something to lose or damage - should be standard iec plug. Get on sale and you have a nice little amp!

Good range of tones. I like the quantity of selections from clean to dirty & that they gradually move up rather than just two or three options. The bass/treble knob works but would rather have distinct controls for each. Powerful. I also like the stereo connection as I put this through two 4 X 12 cabinets in a 15' square room - sounds great.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 40W Guitar Amp Head:

I wanted to try a solid state modeling amp for practice and perhaps to gig with. I already own a couple of Blackstar HT-20s and love the tone. The idea of playing in super wide stereo was really appealing and the demos of the amp sounded fantastic. I wasn't interested in the combo versions of this amp since I already own a couple of stereo speaker cabinets.

I unpacked the amp, plugged it in and the right channel was dead. After troubleshooting a bit, the right channel was indeed dead. I shipped the amp back for exchange the next day.

The tone I got out of the one good channel was very good. Can only imagine what two good channels sound like.

Comments about Blackstar ID:Core 40W Guitar Amp Head:

I have several tube amps that I use to gig/jam with, but I needed something to practice with at home. This Blackstar is the PERFECT solution for me. Several reasons why:

First, and most importantly, you can get some great tones out of this little solid-state buy. Let me start by saying that I was skeptical because I've always associated Blackstar with Metal/Heavy Rock, whereas I'm more of a Blues/Southern Rock kinda guy that you get from Fender tweeds, etc., but this thing is surprisingly versatile. The preset tones sound pretty good, but I usually go into manual mode to get the best sounding ones. For those who have issue with the ISF EQ instead of a traditional 3-band, you can adjust all that via the Insider app (which is free) so that's an easy fix. I haven't hooked it up to a stereo cabinet to get the full effect of the 20 & 20, but it sounds great running through a 1x12. I also haven't tried to keep up with a drummer yet, but it certainly feels like it can get plenty loud just from playing on my own.

Second, is the features. The MP3 & Headphone jacks are essential for me because I want to be able to play along to tracks without disturbing the family. The Insider software has a TON of patches and tone variants, of which I have barely scratched the surface. Again, you can adjust the EQ, Delay, Reverb, and Modulation either on the head or via the software, and saving your settings is easy.

I got this when MF had it on sale for e!ghty doll-hairs and am very pleased with it so far (especially for the price). It's great for practicing at home, but I might even use it for some home recordings as well. I would definitely recommend this little amp. Great job, Blackstar!
