Comments about Blackstar Series One 1046L6 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
While I don't make my money in music, I do have just short of 16 years experience as a guitarist now.
Like many guitarists, I've spent a lot of time looking for the perfect tone. A metal tone, in my case. Though, I certainly like versatility.
I tried many, playing as many as I could, and listening to audio and video clips by the thousands (very probably literally.) Even Mesa didn't have what I wanted. I considered ENGL... but that didn't have quite what I wanted. I'd never heard of Blackstar until I stumbled across them on YouTube by either luck ... or providence. They aren't common in my area, that is for sure. So I made the purchase based only what I heard in the clips - and with much worry and trepidation.
4 months later, I have no regrets. I'd do it again - only this time, I'd probably go with the 200 watt.
This amp has both versatility and tone in abundance, as all 4 of the channels are great and I have no doubt you can find what you are looking for - be it a warm clean or earth rending metal tone. It has served all of my moods quite well - from blues, to aggressive, to brutal, to technical, to epic blackened viking power metal. I have a Rivera Metal Shaman that I like to use on occasion, and the settings I tend to use on the clean channel while running the pedal even have a country twang. Funny how that works.
The clarity even at extremely heavy distorted tones is amazing, I'd never known it was possible prior to purchasing this amp... and I'm pretty fast.
There are no on-board effects, just raw tone. Lots of distortion. Not even an on-board reverb. Pretty straight forward in that respect, if you consider that a downside. For what you get, it is an easy fix. The only problem is deciding what pedals you want.
Other than that, the Blackstar slogan is "The Sound in your head.." I've found it to be closer to true than any other amp can claim.
Comments about Blackstar Series One 1046L6 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
I am a beginner guitarist and I was looking to buy my first amp. I spent a lot of time listening to sound clips and decided to get the Blackstar Series One 1046L6 from Musician's Friend. To me it sounded like a great amp to get the deep heavy metal sounds I was looking for. I also was considering the ENGL Powerball, Mesa dual rectifier, Peavy 6505, What I like most is that even with heavy distortion dialed in I can hear every note where as other amps sounded muddy at fast tempos. There is a youtube video that makes this amp sound fuzzy but I think it must be a problem with the video because I don't hear anything except clear tones. The clean channel is very clean, I can't hear any interference at all and there is a bright switch on that channel. The crunch channel has a super crunch switch that can make this channel even heavier. The 3rd channel is OD1. Blackstar says this is for a British metal. OD2 is for American metal. So far of the 3 channels (excluding the clean) I haven't been able to figure out which one I like the most yet since all of them can be dialed in with heavy distortion. Each of the 4 channels has an equalizer and and ISF and a volume control (two channels share the eq and ISF dials so actually there are only two sets of EQ's and ISF). There is no reverb on this amp. Overall there is an abundance of adjustments to dial in the sound and it is going to take a long time to find my sound. What I find frustrating about this amp is that is has a volume control on each channel, and master volume that affects all channels, and then there is a knob that changes the wattage of the overall amp and I find it is difficult to figure out which one to turn when I want to adjust the volume. The foot switch basically has one button for to activate each channel. So far it is working well. This weight is highly concentrated on the right side of the amp so when you carry it with the handle it feels lopsided. If Blackstar is going to go with this configuration they need to put handles on the sides so one person can carry it with both hands. Keep this in mind if you plan on moving this thing around a lot. The black dials look good but they are a little hard to read the setting since there is only a small painted white dot on them to indicate the position of the dial. The amp seems to be constructed well. Nothing about it feels cheap to me. Some owners say the tubes that come with it dont last very long so I am a little worried about this. So far I am very happy with the amp and I plan on keeping it forever. I don't think there is anything out there with comparable features and sound that can compete at this price point especially if you can get a deal on it.
