OVERVIEW

An incredibly versatile looper that'll give you hours and hours of inspiration.

Since 1995, the Boomerang has been one of the more popular loopers out on the market, road- and studio-tested by such respected guitarists such as Andrew Belew and Daniel Lanois, as well as plenty of bedroom experimenters all over. Mike Nelson and Lee Hardesty of Boomerang Musical Products have taken their original creation to a much higher level with the III Phase Sampler.

First off, the Phase III Sampler now offers you 4 different play styles, each with its own benefit to your creativity side. The Serial Play Style allows you to create one loop after the other, while the Serial Master Play Style is for serial style loopers who like to lay down rhythmic backgrounds behind their melodic loops, perfect for creating verse, chorus, and bridge parts while maintaining a consistent rhythm under all three looped parts. You can even stack on each of the different initial loops for truly intricate soundscapes. Sync Play Style plays all loops simultaneously and in sync while Free Play Style plays all loops simultaneously but not in sync, ideal for those who like to experiment with no boundaries. The Phase III Looper even lets you stutter your start loops for a DJ-scratch like effect or stack loops at half speeds.

There are six knobs to let you control Decay, Volume, Vol 2, Vol 3, Vol 4, and Fade Time, the final 4 being available with a simple tap or hold of one of the two Bonus footswitches. The Bonus footswitches also open up your ability to unlock a plethora of options, including stacking unlimited loops; undo/redo; erasing loops one at a time or all at once; copying a complete loop; Copy Live to enable resampling so the pedal's output is routed to a new loop; Octave for playing a loop at half speed and octave lower; Reverse for playing a loop backwards, Once to play a loop one time through, or if it's already playing, stop it at its end; Stutter gives you a record scratching like effect by repeatedly starting a loop over before it plays all the way through; Fade to fade a loop in or out from 3 to 43 seconds; Reverse Solo enabling you to create reverse leads live; and even a panic button which will stop all recording, stacking & playback, and will cancel all active functions without erasing or altering your loops. An expression pedal jack gives you the option of connecting an expression pedal for foot control of overall playback volume or Decay Rate.

The Phase III Sampler offers two sample rates: 48kHz or 24kHz (both use 20-bit samples; through signal is always 48kHz/24-bit), so you will never have to worry about losing tone or signal loss no matter how intricate your stacking gets. At that sampling rate, you get up over 8 minutes of recording time in mono or 4 minutes-plus in stereo, or drop it down to 24kHz but recording and plying at half speed (12kHz) and you can get a whopping 35 minutes of recording in mono and over 17 minutes in stereo.

Before you mess around with the ready-to-use-out-of-the-box Phase III Sampler, be sure to read the manual to get the most out of this versatile looping machine, and for some great one liners from the Boomerang team.

This is an investment. The more time you put in, the more time you get out of it. This is a pretty advanced piece of technology. Some reviewers have said that the buttons are too small and not practical for live use, but they are actually very easy to use if you spend more than an hour with it (I have big feet). I also have an A-B switch running into it and that allows me to toggle between a synth and a guitar to create layered loops with both instruments. If you're looking to preform solo, but still have a multi-instrumental sound, this is the staple piece of equipment you'll need. If you're using this for live purposes, you shouldn't have any need for memory storage. I feel a player should play a part at least once before looping it or it's simply a recording. If you want to be able to record a part to perfection, and simply recall it during a performance, buy the Jam Man. If you want to preform each part live, buy the Boomerang, the sound replication is flawless.

I have owned and performed with an original boomerang for over 6 years. I wanted to upgrade the sound of my setup, maybe add a function or two. After returning a jamman stereo (see my review there), I ordered this thinking it would be easier to use. It is NOT. They changed around everything and this is a confusing mess after having the old rang model and being used to that. If you're good at learning and memorizing multiple toe taps and combinations and able to do that in the stress and poor lighting of the stage environment, this thing may work well for you. The sound quality is better than the old one, and the construction is solid. However, after reading the manual multiple times and watching demos online before I even bought it, in practice alone at home with my top notch equipment and experience- I cannot get it to work in a practical way. I found myself starting a loop and then getting it to stack was cumbersome, where on the old 'rang, it was easy! I could see getting onstage with this and hitting one wrong button and a pile of looping gibberish would ensue and I'd be stopping in the middle of songs. Why can't they just take the old boomerang- shrink it by 2/3, make it stereo and improve the sound of that? Why did they have to try to reinvent the wheel here? Back to my old reliable 'rang. Sending this one back. Too expensive, too!

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

This is the best looper I have ever used. No noise! Excellent quality. Innovative design. Very versatile looping options. Made in the U.S.A. by fellow Americans. More money than the other loop pedals BUT, you get what you pay for and then some.

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

I use this bad boy for my Bass guitar. It was a hard choice between the BOSS and BOOMERANG but after getting this thing in the mail and plugging it in. Its everything I wanted in a looping pedal. I put that a con is that i have to buy a side car, (boomerangs extra pedal), But just using this pedal will convince you its worth every penny. The construction is amazing as well, solid. If you want to buy a looper that you can jam for hours and hours with and get creative, well this is the looper for you! Hope this helps in the BOSS vs BOOMERANG choice.

a creative and expressive looper thats easy to use

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

overall a great solid product that has alot of great features and lacking some like internal memory saving. if you want a fabulous live on the fly creativity looper this is the best of the best. again the sound is prestine exactly what your original sound is. you will not regret buying this looper over the boss pedal your thinking of.
this looper is just about everything i could have asked for in a looper. first of all it is very intuitive and easy to use in a live setting which is important because you dont have time to think. second and probobly most imortant this looper does not change your sound at all, i play mostly acoustic and this looper captures every nuance of my original sound. the boss loopers change your sound and are not that intuitive to use. i love the buttons on this thing too, they are very easy to click on and off.everything on this pedal was very thoughtfully put together in a way that makes since for a live application and ease of use for a guitarist.
solid steel chasse means this this is built to last. knobs turn well and feel tight and solid. made in texas U.S.A!!!
the endless possibilities of this looper make it worth the price. but i would have liked to see at least a usb or sd card support to at least save to your computer. but overall this is like learning a new instrument and has a million different possibilities and helps greatly improve playing ability, so well worth it in my book! and its made in texas from some guys in there basement who takes pride in there work!!! you cant go wrong

Boomerang 3 looper

By zachary grehl

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

Overall its great, if youre looking for a high quality toy. I would reccomend looking at other loopers if you are stuck on the idea of a looper. I know this goes against every other review on here, but for what I was looking for, the Rang missed the mark several times and that is too much to have to compromise when there is plenty of other gear out there. I'm not sure what else I would reccomend, I'm gonna have to start reseaching all over again. I would reccomend a pedal at aa fraction of the price as this. I figured since I was paying double the price of every looper on this cite that I would be getting one of the best. The quality of the sound is exactly how they describe, and its great! BUt at the end of the day, it just seems like a toy.
While I was researching the features of this product I was highly impressed. Based on what all these reviews had said and all the videos I've seen online I was hooked and couldn't wait to purchase one. owever, upon arrival I quickly found myself dissappointed with the Rangs features. You can only chose to use up to 4 of the features at a time, which I found highly inconvinient for live settings. A pedal at at this price, there shouldn't be such an amateur limitation put on it. The octace function I found completely useless. If you record a loop and apply it, what you get is the loop played back at double time one octave up or half time one octave down. It baffles me why they didn't just simply make it an octave effect. That means you have to either play twice as fast as the bass line you wish to recreate or twice as slow to create a line that you could just simply loop and not waste time putting an octave effect on. This feature seemed like more of a toy-like effect to me. It is described in the manual to have some "fun possibilities" that included getting together with your friends and using the octave function to make your voice sound deep and slow or fast and silly. I'm not interested in that type of usage. I was very dissappointed with that. Not to mention there is no delay, which I knew before-hand, but after using the pedal for a few days, it's not like the rest of the "amazing" features left no room for it. A lot of the features I found useless.
Quality of the loops were pristine. I was surprised, but expected nothing less based on what I had researched previously. They did not fall out of this area. Loops are beyond cd quality and you can control the volumes of each. That was pretty thought out.
The value... A loop station costing this much money should have much better features being offered, I'm sorry. It seems like they were more interested in making a very fun and high quality toy for the family and friends to get to use, rather than for the active gigging musician to use in live settings. Also, after exactly 30 days of working with the pedal, I stopped getting a signal. Darn thing doesn't work anymore! And it's not because it was mistreated at a gig, it never even made it to one. I have no idea why it stopped producing sound but I am going to return it and invest use my money to get a couple other pedals.

AMAZING

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

I play hard...just a little tap will do for this thing though. Buttons are a wee bit too close to each other, but I'll learn to stop flailing my feet around soon enough. I haven't road tested it hard yet but I don't think I'll be breaking it anytime soon. Comes with warranty.

The Rang does what it needs to while not discrediting you as a musician. It takes hours of practice...almost like you're picking up another instrument...if you've never taken a foray into one-man-band land it's quite frustrating at first and throws off your balance as a performer (literally, I think I stood on just my left leg all day today operating it!) but as you get used to it, it becomes muscle memory. If you had trouble leaving an impression on an audience before, you won't after using this thing. You can pump out some pretty sweet jams with yourself. I inadvertently wrote a rhythm/lead riff on it today, totally by accident.
I've tried a bunch of loop stations and pedals...some with 1 button, some with 12...this meets somewhere in the middle with 5 plus some knobs. I didn't see it in any store nor did I try it out beforehand, I just YouTubed some people using it and I was sold. The Rang is the best, by a long shot. It's a bit daunting at first, but once you understand each function, you're hooked...every option is presented. I won't go through them all...just YouTube people using it. Actually, I believe the owner or one of the developers at the company's website and he's got a sweet sense of humor

It doesn't store permanently, but as a live peformer why would you do that? (I can see when you get an idea and you just HAVE to record it, but I always have my phone with me that I just record as a voice memo). I was always enamored when I see the loops being created in front of me as the artist builds on them, i.e. KT Tunstall, that was the first time I ever saw live looping (rephrase: good live looping)...she uses a different unit but the exact idea applies. I love when it all of a sudden she turns into a "band"! I play a very percussive style so what I used to be able to half-loop with my Boss DD-2 I can do with full-on looping with full control. It gets addicting, I've found a use in almost every song I play...tasteful is the key, but you almost have to exercise creativity over lame pre-recorded drum beats and loops because, well...there are none.
American made, feels sturdy. When it samples at the 48kHz/24 bit option, there is absolutely no degradation in sound quality. To get added time there is an option to sample at 24kHz but I don't even come close to the time limit on it (I think it's somewhere around 9 minutes of total loop time at once on highest quality).

I have my set up to split and mix mic and DI signals via a small mixer on my pedalboard so I can loop both off my guitar and mic, and I hook it to the Rang so that only the loops get played - no live signal passes, almost acting like a signal "road block" - and the house mixer gets separate voice and DI outs. When the loops are playing, it sounds exactly like I am still playing live (however a lot of time was spent tweaking volumes of the individual loops and mixer, make sure to do a decent sound check before you play). True stereo and an option to play through the pedal just like another mono stomp box is also possible. Once again, every option!

Sometimes the pedal gets confused and it doesn't output when you're first plugging it in and setting up, but I think it's 100% user error (manual states to plug in all cords before powering on)...I just unplug and plug it back in and it reboots. Once you get the thing working, it works for the whole time you use it.
Quite expensive, doesn't have all the bells and whisles as the Boss or others but I don't need them. I bought it on a whim from other reviews and YouTube videos and I was/am blown away.

Great tool to learn with and grow as a guitarist.

By Jack J.

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

I imagine that I'll have the Rang III for a long, long time, especially compared to other overdrives, choruses and sound-like-tube-amp gadgets that have come and gone.
The Boomerang III Phrase Sampler is an awesome tool to improve as a guitar player and for live playing. It is versatile with feature-assignable Bonus buttons. The four play modes allow me to use it for whatever task is at hand (or feet!).
Built like a tank with thick metal case. Jacks and knobs are solid. Buttons positively click with great feel. Sound quality is excellent with no degrading of tone.
Quality costs. Relatively expensive, but worth it. When the last time you used an electronic device that was made in USA? Built in Texas.

Makes my man-cave rock!

By Captain Moto

from Chicago Area

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

After doing all the pre-purchase research I decided the Rang III is the best choice for me.The obvious difference between this and the other big name loopers is that the Rang does not have memory capabilities. So, If that?s why you want a looper move on to one of the others. However, for my use, I decided that was not the most important factor. Tone, quality construction and ease of use were the major factors in my final decision. In my opinion, this is making me a better musician rather than plying back what I saved yesterday. As a bonus, it?s built in the U.S.A. which makes me feel good.At first glance the dials and buttons seam rather quirky, but having downloaded and read the manual for all loopers, It seemed to me that this thing is the most flexible yet easy to use. Out of the box it?s set up to begin looping with the touch of a button. In fact, you can create and play 3 loops right out of the box. All the extra buttons and dials allow you to customize how the Rang performs the other options (speed, octave, reverse, fade etc..) What is not obvious on YouTube and text reviews is how quiet and fast the foot switches operate (no heavy click just a very light tap). This is my first looper so, I had no re-learning frustration. Overall the Rang III has met or exceeded my expectations. Solid construction, No tone loss, easy to use yet flexible enough for live performances or your man cave. The premium price is significant but I?m happy with my choice.

Schweeeeeeet looper

Comments about Boomerang III Phrase Sampler:

While the III operates a little differently than the older Boomerang Plus, it retains the ease of use that Boomerang is known for. As on the Plus, recording a loop requires 2 foot button taps, turning on stack (add layers) takes 1 press, turning off stack takes 1 press. The cool thing is the III is more of everything: more loops, longer record time, way better sound quality, undo, fade out & fade in, built-in Reverse Solo effect and some new capabilities such as playing 4 loops at once. Top notch pedal.
