This pedal gets some serious hate. I've come to the conclusion that this stems from one of two things:
1) In many cases, it seems to boil down to personal taste. Fair enough - distortion / overdrive pedals are very different from one another, and different people are looking for different things. This pedal may not be for you.
2) In many other cases, though, I think it's a lack of ability to use the pedal properly. A lot of distortion pedals are more or less "pre-voiced" to sound a certain way, making them "plug-and-play." This isn't one of those pedals. It simply adds distortion, which by itself, isn't necessarily going to sound good to everyone. But you can get a very wide variety of sounds out of it with careful use of the tone and blend controls, as well as - and I can't stress this enough - working with the tone and volume controls on your bass. For example, I've found plenty of those classic, warm, overdrive tones that some people say you can't get from this pedal simply by rolling off the tone and volume on my bass. So I highly recommend that you spend some serious time experimenting with this pedal before you write it off. It still might not be for you, but at least you'll have a more informed opinion about it.

I have owned this product for almost 5 years and have had a love/hate relationship with this pedal. I remember first getting it to recreate dirty punk/metal sounds like so many other people that have written customer reviews. At the time I purchased this I was very enthralled with it and couldn't get enough of using it in it's appropriate setting. But I suppose you can say, people outgrow certain sounds, yeah? The description on this pedal claims that it doesn't take away from the presence of your sound, but as time passed, I realized how empty the distortion sound. Instead of providing a thick foundation at the bottom, I found myself fulfilling more of a second guitar role. Eventually, I felt like my bass didn't sound like a bass at all.Gradually, I wanted to stop doing extremely dirty sounds and go to just a little bit of drive and a boost in tone. All I wanted was thick, full tone that was just a little on the rough side. I found that very hard to do even with the balance and gain controls. MF and Boss also advertise this pedal to be used as a 2 band EQ, but it didn't really help or boost my sound.I do love the features of this pedal though, for such a cheap price I love all the control I get. But what are all the options if you can't really get a good sound out of it either way?I think you would have to have decent equipment to make this pedal sound great but usually if you can afford that, you would be buying a more expensive overdrive unit. If you already have good equipment, this pedal, like many inexpensive pedals, will have a negative effect on your sound. For people with budget equipment, there are better products out there for just a little bit more that are a much better investment seeing as they enhance your sound a lot more. In fact, I don't know why everybody just doesn't save up for the Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI. I have more recently moved onto the Tech 21 Sansamp PSA 1.1 which (for $600) gives me not only all the overdrive/distortion sounds I want at programmable presets, but big FAT tone enhancement that the Boss didn't have. And for those who really want to stay on a budget, the ODB3 is good I guess, but remember that you also have to buy the Adapter for this. It not only has a very short battery life, but also is EXTREMELY NOISY without the adapter.

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I play metal, hard rock, 90's grunge to modern metalcore. It was exactly what I needed to add a hard driving rone for the pedal board. It is suttle if you need that tone as well. Great pedal

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I've owned and used the Boss ODB since 2002 and IMO, it's awesome...but maybe not for everyone. For Punkrock or Metal (especially Doom) this thing kills. It's got a warm tone and it saturates your bass signal.
With the Gain cranked up, it functions a little more like a Fuzz, but the controls are variable and responsive so you should get some nice thickness and more sustain as you increase the Gain and Balance.
I recently tried my old ODB alongside an Ibanez Bass Tube Screamer, (which I think is a nice pedal and worth checking out) and I still prefer the Boss.
Is it great for every single application? Nope. But it's still my favorite means of adding "distortion" to bass tone.

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

More of a fuzztone than a true overdrive pedal. It's still a lot of fun and surprisingly controllable. A little noisy but not overly so for a pedal at this price point. It's really not subtle, so it's probably not good to try to use to just color your tone slightly, although if you're looking for an on-off fuzz, it would be a good choice. Very well built as well, not really suitable for recording, unless you're running a rough demo tape. Consider it a really fun toy with some utility but not a featured pedal, if that makes sense. Could be lots of fun to bash around on.

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

This pedal offers much range. From warm and fuzzy to all out thunder. Great for metal and hard rock. Test it out and watch some demos. A fun and useful pedal, I use it often with varying degrees of OD. Cuts through well, better than some other OD pedals I've heard that come across as flabby.

To say the least Boss is awesome. It has withstood the test of time and musicians all over appreciate them. This boss overdrive pedal is great. It has a subtle mix of high range distortion to mild overdrive textures, that is nice and easy on the ears.

I purchased this effects pedal over ten years ago back in 2001, it still works and performs as good as it did when i first got it. Boss pedals are built like tanks and can handle all sorts of abuse. Mine still looks like its brand new even after 10 years of abuse. I would recommend Boss effects pedals to anyone.

I have tried a Bass Big Muff,Boss Bassman,Sans amp bass driver,Rat Pro co, Ibanez Tube screamer, and a Zoom B2, through out the years and have found out, the only pedal, that I use in a band situation, that sounds great is the ODB-3! I have mine since 1999 and it still rocks! I Never had any problems with it.I can get Mild tube overdrive to warm distortion. From Billy Sheehan to Noel Redding, its in this pedal.

          Good for bass...AND guitar.

          By Klak Merrill

          from Jamestown, NY

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

This pedal sounds great on bass. Warm and fuzzy? Sharp and crunchy? Whatever ya want. Tough construction. Good, simple features. Good range. Very practical. And what's nice is that if you are a touring kinda guy and your pedal breaks or someone steals it, most Boss pedals aren't too hard to find, so if you're on the road you can find 'em anywhere.
This may just be my own preference, but this thing also positively destroys as a regular guitar distortion/overdrive/whatever the heck. As stated before, very warm and muffy or very crunchy. Obviously, it's made for a bass, so on a regular guitar, the result is that it can sound very thick and that is OK with me because i really like those big Wino-ish, Melvinsy Doomy kinds of guitar tones that are usually associated with the so-called "stoner rock" big tube sound. But that's just what i use it for because i'm more of a guitar player anyway. You can actually use it for a lot more than just that. If ya want good dirt, you should at least give it a try. This is a pedal for those who yearn.
