I couldn't find a good description of what this actually does so here's my try.
This is basically a gate with built-in trigger patterns, like a fancy version of tremolo. It does not change the signal other than cutting it off and on (except for the 'harmonic patterns' which just add pitch shift to some of the 'slices'). It does have an attack control which allows for a fade in or boost when the signal cuts in but unlike true ADSR control the sustain control doesn't allow for control over how the signal fades out. Instead it just controls how long it is on.
It is not a looper although it has the ability to record a single track so you can play against it. I can't imagine getting much use out of this feature.
Overall the pedal is kind of disappointing since it could have been really cool. I will never use it live so I'm not sure why it needs to be a pedal since in the studio the same effect can be accomplished with most gates by feeding the key (side-chain) input from a track with your pattern. I also have some plugins that do this.
Not sure why I'm not sending it back but I think I might find a use for it someday. I guess you never know when a strange effect will spawn a new song.
BOTTOM LINE: before you buy try it out and be sure you will have a use for it.

I use this on my Korg and it's been a lot of fun to play with. I quit playing music for a while and picked it back up making soundscapes and noise in the vein of boards of canada (not as brilliant of course, no one can pull that off except boc themselves). I wanted to make some music you can get lost in and play in the dark. I picked this pedal up since the effects sounded pretty neat and right up my alley. I combined it with my boss space echo and boss giga delay and it makes some interesting sounds. It is limited on effects itself but combined and tweaked enough you can get a great sound for your songs or performances. I would highly recommend the boss psa power supply or it will eat your batteries up quick. I don't find too many reviews on pedals hooked up with keyboards so I'm hoping to see more people talking about it instead of looking up youtube videos to try and debate what my purchases should be.

I like this pedal, it has some cool sounds. But it's hard to play with. I have used it for bass, guitar, and making backing tracks. As a bass player its hard to play with a guitar player that's using it unless you specifically have a song for the effect. It takes some arranging to make a spot for this. The stereo I/O is nice, but in most pedal board applications, it isn't necessary. Great sounds, but not sure its worth the full purchase price

If running this pedal alone isnt enough, i run it through a boss phase shifter as well for the rise/fall aspect. I have tried running it through my RE-20, but the tap tempo has to be really slow in order to get a nice delayed tone. The harmonic patterns are great, and i would love to try this through a bass rig. Thingamagoop adds a groove too.

One of the customer representatives at the store saw me messing with some pedals, and he took this one out of the display case. He told me how much fun he had with it, and recommended that I try it out. He had used the pedal on both guitar and bass, and claimed it sounded much better on bass. So I plugged my bass into it and was instantly blown away. It created some seriously strange and interesting sounds, and I ended up playing with it for more than an hour in the store. I was pretty well sold on it, and brought it home with me. However...The more I played on this thing at home, the more I felt limited by the sounds it creates. To give you a run down, this pedal is an audio pattern processor, which basically means that it plays different patterns over the notes you are playing. Coupled with any delay pedal, you can continue the patterns even after you stop playing, which is both cool and almost necessary, in my opinion. The first thing that dissapointed me was that there is no way to create your own patterns, you're stuck with the fifty patterns that Boss gives you. And while you may be thinking that fifty patterns sounds like a lot, try this pedal out first, becase most of these patterns sound exactly the same. There are a few variations in the sounds, such as a Harmonics feature which plays arpeggios for you. And a few other strange sounds. But overall, you can't really avoid the Kid A/techno/Postal Service-esque sounds that this pedal creates.I imagine that boss will be inventing newer and better slicer technology. Perhaps a pedal that allows you to create your own patterns. There are some cool ping pong and other stereo effects, and I'm sure this would be a cool thing to rig up for a DJ that was looking for some interesting electronic sounds. But overall, a very limiting pedal.

I love this pedal! If you need a ton of atmosphere sounds and really cool backing tracks, put this pedal on your board. I have used this on Sunday mornings with our band, and in my home by myself. In both cases, everytime I step on it I smile.Try this pedal with an ebow and tell me it isn't cool. I dare you.
