OVERVIEW

Welcome to your personal tonal time machine.

Bugera captures old-school amp musicality in their V55HD amp head, whose modern touches put a wider palette of vintage voicings at your fingertips. With a proud pair of 6L6 power tubes in the output stage, the Bugera V55HD bathes your guitar in clean California sunshine. Let's go trippin'.

Bugera went to great lengths to give this tube amp head the ability to deliver everything those dusty relics of the rock revolution did-minus the collector-sized price tags. But this labor of love was taken one step farther to give you maximum tonal possibilities in true Bugera fashion.

Amps once came in two varieties: those with triode (having three active electrodes) power tubes and those with pentode (containing five active electrodes) power tubes. Triode tubes, which predated the pentodes, provide what many guitarists agree is a "softer" tone. Pentodes produce a slightly more urgent, aggressive sound. The V55HD runs on power pentode tubes, but includes a Mode switch that lets you run the power section as if it had triode tubes-that is, at about 40 percent less power. This gives you the option of going beyond old-school-straight to elderly school.

The old amps that defined electric guitar tone were often single-channel amps. This Bugera V55HD tube amp offers that same vintage clean, but add a second channel for modern high-gain tones. To begin, take your pick of the Bright or Normal inputs, then twist the three-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble) and Presence control to sculpt your signature sound. Depending on which channel you choose, three 12AX7 preamp tubes take your tone anywhere from dignified blues to garage-leveling madness.

The Bugera V55HD's power stage's dual 6L6 tubes propel this tone. The head has an impedance switch that toggles between 4, 8 and 16 ohms, making them compatible with virtually any speaker cabinet. These amps also have reverb, but in the interest of tone and durability, their reverb is derived from a studio-caliber digital processor. The spring reverb found in their post-war predecessors sound lovely, but they're delicate and expensive to repair. The V55HD's modern update gives you an equally mesmerizing vintage reverb sound without the wallet-draining vintage reliability. And if all these features weren't enough, you also get a road-tough footswitch that allows you to select channels and activate/kill the reverb remotely.

This seems to be a common complaint, the reverb or the channel switching malfuncions and the amp is blamed. I went through a similar thing with my
V55. The lead channel would work fine but would start crackling like it had a bad tube or socket and die.
I ran down these things and found that they were fine. Next, I unplugged the pedal and everything came back. The pedals are just light duty micro-switched circuits and suffer from corrosion, possibly from sitting around salt air. I had the warranty so got another pedal. It was fine for about a week of light use. It too went out. Called the retailer and asked if I would void the warranty if I opened up the pedal. They said no. So I did. The small micro switches sit behind a board that must be pulled back and flipped over. A simple squirt of Deoxit on the tiny black buttons on the micro/sw's has lasted two years now with no return of the symptoms. Good amp bad pedal.

I was really excited when this amp head showed up at my house. I had owned the combo a while back, but ended up returning it after about a week due to some strange hissing noises. I decided to give the head a try, assuming that Bugera had had enough time to get these tweaked and working well. I never even got to hear the thing. I un-boxed it, put it on top of my Vox cab, got everything hooked up properly, turned it on, and no sound came out. I tried "resetting" the amp, and went back through the whole process - still no sound. I then tried out another head with the cab, just to make sure that something didn't go wrong with the speaker or connections; the head worked perfectly. I gave the Bugera one more shot and still got nothing out of it. I wish this amp had worked, the value seemed pretty good, I liked what I heard through demos, and I was looking forward to giving it a good shot for gigging. I guess I'm just not meant to have a Bugera, but I sure won't be recommending any of their products to anyone else anytime soon.

Dead after 2 Weeks

By Patrick Carbone

from CT, USA

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

.7
First, let me say, I LOVE the sound of this amp. My friend and I have been playing electric guitar 25 years combined and he loved the sound too (he plays anything from hard rock to alternative and I play classic rock, metal, and alternative).

The clean channel is what is the best about this amp. I don't even like the gain channel as much as my favorite stomp boxes through the clean channels (3 12AX7's I believe, but dont hold me to it).

The bad thing is that the amp died (no tubes burnt out) after two weeks. I didn't gig with it, or play it for more than a good 15 or 20 hours and it flat out died - no output to the speaker cabinet. I tried with another amp and that amp worked fine.
Nothing fancy about the construction, tolex, cloth, and obviously not overall electrical durability. Dead after two weeks.
If the next one I get last a year or two and the only issue is the tubes, then I'll say it's a great value. For now I can't say.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Great tone on a budget! The clean channel is perfect for country rock - my Telecaster just sings, switch to a P-90 or humbucker guitar and it rolls on crunch perfectly.
Two channel 12AX7/6L6 all tube head. Switchable from Triode to Pentode mode. This amp is pretty straightforward - plug in your guitar, twiddle the tone knobs and you're off. The mid boost switch gives it a more British sound and I wish Bugera had implemented it on the footswitch - with the mid boost disabled, the amp has a bit of a scooped sound. I am running it through an open-backed singled 12" Celestion speaker in an old Mesa cab and my impression is that the amp lacks real strong bass - but since I like my tone strong in the high mid-range, this amp is perfect for my needs. Ohm selector includes 4, 8 and 16 and the formula for selecting is clearly documented in the user manual - since I use the head with 3 different cabs, I had to go online at one of my first gigs to look up the setting for the particular cab - you might want to copy that page and take it with you if you're in my situation, as setting it wrong can harm the head.

Like a lot of other reviewers, I was really impressed with the clean channel - Bugera convinced me that you don't need to drop a lot to get a really nice, flexible, clean tube tone, but now I'm gingerly experimenting with the overdrive channel and have found that setting the gain to 2 and the volume to 8 on the second channel produces a good solo-ing sound for classic rock with the mid-boost on. - Still wish that mid-boost was on the pedal...... Anyway - the pedal itself does give control over the channel and reverb and is included in the box - seems very well made with a long cord and very cool blue light on reverb side (gets a lot of comments). The amp uses a standard detachable power cord (don't forget it like I did last week).

Some of the higher-end Bugeras allow you to switch tubes to EL34s, but this one does not have that feature.
I get the impression that Bugera has been improving their quality - I think the V55HD is built as well as any equipment I've encountered. The handle is massive and the cabinet edges stick out just far enough to protect the knobs. I've only had the head for 3 months so I can't predict electronic quality.
Compared to all the insanely price-inflated tube gear out there, this seems to stand alone as great value. - It has a lot of character - Not as lush as a comparable Fender or raunchy as a Vox exactly, but definately in those ballparks - and 99.9% of the listening public really don't care anyway, right? I continue to tweak with my various guitars and pedals and am finding no problem working it in as my primary amp at gigs. Plenty of power in Pentode mode for a club band.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp sounds really good, and it LOVES pedals. If you want pure rock power, that pushes lots of air ,get a Marshall head and a 4X12 cab,and have at it.This amp covers a LOT of ground, and it seems very reliable to me,although I've only had it about a year.I use it constantly and haven't had an issue. There were some problems with the early models made at the end of 2009.Datecodes for the problem amps are: 09 10,09 11,and 09 12.My both amps are datecode 10 05,and they work perfectly.
This is like my third review of this amp,but I felt that I should post something about the triode setting on the back of the V55.At first I sort of dismissed this feature, because #1,you lose some clean headroom, and #2,you lose some wattage(power)on this setting. Then I started using some fuzz pedals, and when you use fuzz pedals you find out that they want a signal with a bit of gain/grit in it,and on pentode setting on clean, you just don't get that.It makes a HUGE difference in the way these type of pedals react. So I switch it to triode to see if that helps, and because of the power drop, now I can turn up the master volume to get more tube saturation. It solved the problem completely, and I'm finding that I can live with a little less headroom. There is also IMO quite an improvement in the gain channel on the triode setting,it is definitely "usable" now,and the boost button helps this channel as well.
I've had this amp over a year now,and I should say that I did replace the stock 12AX7 preamp tubes with Tungsols, which made quite a difference in making the amp sound better. That being said, there are definitely better amps to be had out there, but not in this price range. And just try to find a 6L6 based amp,in this price range. There is a definite over-abundance of EL84 amplifiers, and I'm not sure why because they usually use twice the amount of tubes, and they're not really much cheaper than 6L6's.Is it all hand wired? No.Does it to react to pedals like a boutique amp? No.Does it cost 2 or 3 thousand dollars?NO.
I bought another one for a spare.I can't even believe how cheap it was. This amp is an amazing value.Other manufacturers should offer affordable 6L6 models, but they don't.Why is that?

One of the best

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I absolutely adore this amp. If you're thinking about saving up for a more expensive 100-watt head, get this amp instead and save yourself a few hundred dollars. It gets incredibly loud, and with the volume cranked, it could probably handle a large venue. Again, for your money, this is one of the best amps that you could buy.
The controls on this amp are pretty straightforward. Added to the standard 3-band EQ, there's also "presence" and reverb controls. The reverb is pretty awesome, and the presence dial basically changes the fullness and power of your sound, which is a nice touch. When you play with the volume settings the clean will go from the most beautiful sparkle to a slightly overdriven, bluesy crunch. Channel two, the overdrive, is possibly one of the best built-in overdrives I've heard. By fiddling with the gain, it will play anything from classic rock to modern rock to full-bore metal. I absolutely love it.
The quality of this amp is pretty excellent. It has a slightly road-worn look to it, which is a bit annoying, but other than that, it looks pretty good. The tubes are good, unlike many stock tubes, and the footswitch is pretty durable.
If you have a chance to buy this amp used, DO IT. I got it used, but I would gladly have paid twice the full price for it. For your money, this is one of the best amps that you can buy.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I currently own 3 Bugera amps/combos; A V-55 , 1990 and a V-22 Combo. All three sound and work very well in any situtation. I will use any of the three for live or rehearsal work. They all sound great. The only downside of the V55HD is the size of the head. It looks like a combo without speakers. I had mine modified reducing the height by 2 inches and replacing the front panel with a grill for ventilation. It now looks a bit like a 60's Bassman head (size wise), and still performs well. The V-1 tube was changed to a 5751 tube which changes the reponse and playability of the amp. It also improves the gain channel to my tastes. My 1990 is standard and sounds as good as any Marshall JCM 900. My V-22 has an 12AT7 in V-1 tube position otherwise stock. I experiment with different tubes on most of my amps. Results will vary but I recommend this minor modification. Just remember all tubes are not created equal. Purchase good quality tubes but don't spend your life savings, although you may find variance between the same model and part for the same manufacturer. It's the nature of the tube manufacturing process. You shouldn't need to spend a great deal on preamp or power tubes. There are some good sellers out there.

    A STEAL!!

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I just received this badboy and matching 212 cab today, and I'm totally floored. Currently gigging out with a Vintage Modern 2266 and DSL, I was skeptical of this being a similar sound quality. I'm VERY impressed!! I've never played a Bugera before so I don't know how this compares to other models, but who cares! You can talk about price and looks all day long, but GOOD tone is really what your after and you WILL get that with this amp.The clean tone is smooth, and can be dark or brighter depending on your settings. Lead channel is loaded with a fair amount of gain, perfect for blues and harder rock. Not a metal amp, as if you couldn't tell just by looking at it. Diming the lead channel volume and bringing up the master slowly gives you a nice fizzy classic sound or play around and you'll find a tone for anything else in your head. Matching 2x12 cab speakers aren't bad, they do seem to be voiced for this head. My vintage 60s had more bite but the bugera's are pretty smooth and well balanced. Maybe a tad bassy, but decent overall. Similar to my G12 60s.Pentode/Diode switch is perfect for cutting power for home volumes, and doesn't cause much if any tone loss. Ability to run at 4,8,16 ohms is also a plus. Reverb on this thing is great. It gets the job done without any compromise or having to buy a pedal. Pedals sound fine though the loop, and didn't cause any unwanted noise. ..Assuming you have good cables on your board, that will help.Overall, this amp has looks that won't quit and a tone to match. You can't beat the price, but if you're too cool for school good ahead and buy an overpriced amp if it makes you happy. Remember tone is subjective just like music. If you like it, go with it. Give this amp a shot, try before you buy if you can. If it's not for you, at least you gave it a fair chance.

I was SUPREMELY impressed on the CRYSTAL CLEAR sound of this baby...for a fraction of the price!! The cleans from my Gretsch SANG loud and clear with no static or muddiness at all. The only negative comment I have is the overdrive & channel 2 were muddy, staticky and weak, but I have plenty of pedals that ROCKED the walls off my house on NORMAL, especially when I used my Les Paul SG. The tri-tube mode was all right but keep it in Pent-tube mode, but, hey, if you want to grab your Tele and play surf music, you'll have a blast in Tri-tube mode. But the Pent-tube mode makes this baby sing, especially for your humbucker guitars. I would rate this like 4.7 due to the overdrive (but can't due to rating system), but I rounded up because the cleans just sounded way too awesome! Save $$ and don't buy EVH, Marshall, Orange or other heads and get this baby now!

I've been in this game for 28 years and have played it all from 80's metal to the grunge movement of the 90's to country and back to 70's Black Sabbath. I've had them all Fenders, Marshalls, many many high end tube and solid state amps. I've even built a few a tube amps in search of the all mighty tone of the Gods, and this is a great amp... For the money you cant beat it get a 1960a or 1960b cab and put a heat vent in...ur good to go.

the title pretty much says it all. Bought this amp last december. Cleans are great and break up nice when you dig in, distortion. Great classic rock sound but just a touch better. More full range. It is hard to describe but I love it!! This amp loves pedals!! I use a boost, a distortion and a chorus and a danelectro rocky road all sound great!! Amp is extremely reliable!! gig 2 to 4 times a month and practice atleast once a week and not one problem!! For awesome cleans and great rock tones, this head is hard to beat. Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I got my new Bugera a few months ago,and waited until "after the honeymoon period" so that I really knew what this amp was about, before writing a review.First of all,it's heavy-built like a brick s#!thouse, and the color is much nicer than the computer gen. picture on the website. The enclosure is not wood, its MDF board;kind of stuff they build heavy cheap shelving out of.The reverb is digital and it's GOOD.Better then some spring reverbs I've had,and if you want it off, just hit the switch pedal(channel AND reverb-both with LED-nice)There are three volumes CLEAN,VOLUME(gain ch.),and MASTER-which makes it easy to adjust volumes if you use both channels(which I really don't)The gain channel is eh...ok,some people have compared it to a distortion pedal, and that's a fair comparison I guess. The clean channel is very good-I found it could be a bit bright at times(ice picky??)so I changed out the stock preamp tubes for Tungsols-BIG IMPROVEMENT.The Tungsols also helped the gain channel; a little bit less "fuzzy".It is LOUD.Also this amp LOVES pedals. It has a triode/pentode switch in the back. I leave it on PENTODE ONLY-triode does not do anything for me at all,and I taped the switch in place.I only use the the clean channel because it sounds great.Fender great...no,but look at the pricetag. The closest thing to this Fender offers is the Supersonic head, which is three times the price, with no reverb.Yes,some of the earlier made V55's had some issues with the VST being too close to the valves-I believe they fixed the problem-mine has no issues whatsoever.I think this amp is a great value,if stolen I would buy another one immediately.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This head looks awesome. I love the vintage classic 50's look with the white chicken knobs. After messing with the controls I did get a really nice tone from the lead channel. However, I was not able to achieve a good clean tone from channel 1. No matter what I tried it has a muddy sound to it. I'm thinking about swapping out the tubes, maybe that will help? I have other tube amps and the clean channels sound awesome. That should always be an automatic with a tube amp. I'll keep messing with this amp, besides the muddly clean, I really like this amp.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I picked up a used V55hd with the old cream tolex, and a new Bugera 4x12 cab. Fired them up, what a disapointment. Was about to take both back, then tried running head through my Line 6 DT25 1x12 cab.....Bam! What a difference! The clean channel of this head is absolutely fantastic for the money. Also, I paired it with my POD HD500 for some gain (run it with the clean channel of the V55) and get some great tones out of it, both with gain and using some of the Line 6 clean patches....awesome tones with a Strat HSS. For the money, you cant go wrong. V55HD Highly recomended, not so much so for the bugera cab, I took it back.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Fine sounding amp. Best value out there. Good tone at any volume. Drive a bit fizzy but not bad. I wonder at times how much experience some of these reviewers have with amps. I have a HUGE collection of amps, vintage and modern. For the money, Bugera is the top of the pile. Serious tube tone at the price of a modeling amp-wait... EVEN LESS!!! These guys will put line6 out of business. A really great alternative to spending thousands on an amp only to find out it is unusable unless turned up past the threshold of pain.. this amps tone is good anywhere on the dial. I really love it with any type of guitar. Loves them all equally as good. Another reviewer wrote it's not good with single coils... it's EXCELLENT with single coils. Total blues experience with a Strat! Great job Bugera, you've got a good thing started.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is my second Bugera and I like it a bit better than the first (Louder and crunchier with higher fiber content). These are relatively simple amps with limited features. I use a Red Witch chorus through the effects loop on everything. Two of my guitars have piezo pickups in the bridge that give a nice acoustic sound that the Bugera makes sound rich and full. Have played a bit with the triode/pentode switch, but mostly just leave it on pentode. The triode is a nice change of pace, sounds warm and beautiful with softer numbers. I have no experienced any tech problems with either amp, but I also tend to play relatively quietly. I've taken it up to 11 to see how loud it would go and it seems to hold up nicely, but this isn't something I would do regularly.

I think these are a fine value, albeit lacking a lot of built in amp modeling or effects. They're pretty simple and straightforward, making for a good jumping off point.
