I don't often rave about gear, as I'm VERY picky. But reading all the reviews about this pedal made me very curious. I've been thinking about buying a Marshall amp recently just because I occasionally love to get a little Billy Gibbons crunch on some tunes. I already own a Carl Martin compressor/limiter, and have been VERY happy with that too, so I was very excited and curious when I received the Plexitone. I'm happy to report that it lives up to its promises. This thing really delivers. Most overdrive pedals add a lot of noise, which is highly disturbing to me. This one doesn't! I can dial in a pretty damn hardcore high-gain tone without significant humming or noise. As most other reviews have already stated, you can go from subtle overdrive to serious crunch with this, and it doesn't really color the amp sound which is essential to me. I'm playing a party gig tomorrow, and can't wait to fire this thing up. The other thing is that it sounds pretty damn good even at low volume. As far as the price tag, you get what you pay for, and this thing oozes quality and looks like it's built very well. My only minor gripe with this is that as many other Carl Martin pedals, it has a built-in power supply. If you're a touring musician traveling outside of the US, you'd have to bring a converter to use it. For this, I'm rating it 4.5 instead of 5 for features. Other than that, this is a great pedal!

I watched the YouTube demo for this pedal and fell in love. I should have done more research as I would have found that this pedal doesn't match well with many amps. In fact, the booklet that came in the box with this pedal describes this model of Plexitone in contrast with the newer version as "not as amp friendly." I ran this through a Vox AC15C1 that I love and the solos were perfect but cords were cheap, tinny and weak sounding. This really is more of a distortion pedal and less of an overdrive. Thanks to Musicians friend for giving me a hassle free return on this, your willingness to give great deals as well as quality customer service is why I come here to shop.

Replaced 3 pedals with this one

By MongMong

from Seattle

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I A/B'd this with a Tube Screamer TS808 reissue. The results were CLEAR, as in this thing made the TS808 sound muddy and limited (read MORE headroom). I then A/B'd it with a Mesa Bottle Rocket Tube overdrive pedal. This was closer but I decided that this thing was more lush and smooth whereas the Mesa was more gritty and teethy. The boost function allowed me to replace another pedal as well. In the end I came out with a better array sounds and it paid for itself and then some by way of replacing pedals.

Real British Tone and Feel

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This is a little monster! The tones and "feel" are just like my old Marshall that was hot-rodded by Jose. It sounds like a stack, but won't break your back. Delicious, nutritious and sooo good for you!

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Okay there is a sound we all here in our heads when we're not chunkin some ultra high gain power chords or playin some soft blues on a dinky ts9 or BB Preamp...ITS THAT IN BETWEEN sweet harmonic sound that everytime you plug in it sounds like you just put ON a fresh set of strings on...Well thats where the plexitone takes the cake..I've heard "its only for humbuckers"..BUT thats not entirely true (it loves my american strats plugged into my hotrod deville 2X12)...this pedal is able to take you anywhere from **testify by SRV all the way to Angus & Malcom with a touch of Audioslave.. and the built in power supply is a nice touch also. When I first fired it up, all the knobs were set at noon and I instantly knew it would only take seconds to dial in an ABOVE average sound. A tube amp is probably reccomended but I'm nowhere near an expert, but my tone search is over...YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Well it's been a while since I started looking for a pedal that could do what the plexitone does!I own a '65 Fender Twin Reverb (a beautiful clean amp) since I am a hobbyist and play only in small/medium gigs, I did'nt want to buy a marshall head in order to get a good distortion.went thru some boss' pedals, marshall's..mxr's even thru other cool pedals as fulltone's. But I have to tell you...never before my twin sounded as it does now, when I plug my les paul and run it thru the plexitone. It gives you the chance of having 2 different channels in order to get 2 different distortions! The tone knob REALLY gives u TONE CONTROL, and the boost is awesome, you can use it to boost this pedal or others in your effect chain.Hands down...a pedal that will never go off my pedalboard, a distortion that can make a fender amp like a plexi W/halfstack.I really recommend it!

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Overall, nothing else to say but "I'm bummed it didn't work out!"
I researched this pedal and was sure it was the one for me. I loved the idea of two drives AND a boost all in one unit. When it arrived I was excited to plug it in. But once plugged into my 1976 Fender Deluxe Reverb, it sounded like a chainsaw! I could not get any decent sounds out it no matter the settings -very brittle and harsh. I will say, however, that the boost did work as advertised. I was very disappointed. The search is still on! For now, I will keep my Mosferatu and Fulltone Distortion Pro!
The build quality appears to be top notch. Very sturdy unit.
Very pricey unit, that alone convinced me to buy it thinking it was going to be a solid drive.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I love my Plexitone and play through a Fender Blues Junior. My favorite settings are: setting gain 1 on about 8:00 for a great clean plexi sound, or setting gain 1 on about 8:00 and gain 2 on 10:30 for outstanding ACDC tones. You can also crank it up for more gain then most Fender amp players are ever going to need. The boost channel is also very useful for evening out levels.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Nicely made pedal. I like the three stages of crunch/high gain/boost. Problem to me is there is only one tone control. To get the pedal to sound good, the basic amp tone has to be "middy" and dull sounding with rolled off highs.

I can definitely hear the cranked plexi sound in this pedal, but I just couldn't get the highs and mids to sound right. I have a few Barber Pedals that can achieve this tone when stacked. Didn;t make sense to keep it for the what it cost. Returned it quickly.

Good Pedal ... If You Have Humbuckers

By Tim-FT5Vp

from Houston, TX

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

The pedal gave me what I wanted. I have basically all fender tube amps (Blues Jr, '65 Twin Re-Issue) and wanted an overdrive/distortion that would give me somewhat of a Marshall sound. The pedal gives me the sound I wanted through the crunch channel and the high gain channel. There are some things I noticed: (1) It will sound very sharp if you dial the tone above 12 o'clock. I keep mine about 10 o'clock (about a 3 or 4 if there were numbers on the dial) with no problem; (2) The boost gives you a HUGE jump in volume, therefore you only need to set that dial to a little above the zeroed point; (3) It sounds best with hum bucking pickups if you're using Fender style amps; the Nashville Tele didn't quite get a good sound through my Blues Jr. or Twin. And this pedal. Best sound I was able to get with this pedal with a Tele which had a Seymour Duncan Li'l 59 in the bridge or my Les Paul Custom.

Wise Use of Your Money

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I wish there were more reviews for the higher end pedals. People need to learn that spending the extra money is a good thing sometimes. I have a Fender Ultimate Choruse Combo that I installed a pair of Celestion Vintage 30's in, and this pedal turns it into a Marshall! I didn't even pick up on the Plexitone reference at first. It also previously received a Guitar Player Editor's Pick Award. It sounds incredible, three pedals in one. It makes make amp crank so loud, I can barely get to turn up the high gain, yet alone the boost with the high gain on. You can also use the boost separately without the gain. This pedal is hand made in Denmark. I'd tell anyone looking at an overdrive pedal to spend the $$$ and not waste their time on cheaper pedals.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Not much else can be said about this that the other reviews haven't already said. I've never used a pedal that can breathe so much life into any amp you plug it into. Seriously. It will take a solid state piece of junk practice amp and turn it into a fire breathing monster!Plug it into a tube amp and have a new pair of pants ready cuz you're definately going to have trouble controlling yourself with this one! I've tried every boutique overdrive and clean boost pedal on the market and none of them are as versatile and powerful as this. The clean boost is the greatest gift to tube amp owners Denmark has ever given us!Thank you Carl Martin for every tone I could possibly want!!!Van halen, Vai, Metallica, Clapton, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, ZZ Top, Satriani, Pettrucci, Malmsteen, ok you get the point!

Plexitone overdrive

By Playwithears

from Finland

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Ive been searching for this sound for a long time. Ive played with various different pedals, amps, built-in distortions, multieffects etc. One of the best ever was a combination of my JCM 800 and TS-9 Tubescreamer. The downside was a loud humming and lack of operations. After that I used a Boss distortion which was quite versatile but didnt have that authentic warm tube sound I was looking. I tested the Plexitone with a Fender tube-combo and I got everything out from this pedal I ever needed. The crunch channel offers everything you need for rhythm guitar. From a slight o.d. to loud crunchy distortion youd expect from early Van Halen recordings for example and beyond that. The high-gain goes 11 and is crystal clear. The tone really changes as you twist the knob. With a great amp and reverb/delays and other basic effects you get everything you need out of this if youre into vintage/pro-sound. It sounds great on both, singe-coil and humbucker guitars.

Very nice plexi amp tone

By snide

from Alabama

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal will make you want to play for hours on end. I use mine with a JCM-800 amp through the low input. As for guitars, the best sound I have found is my Les Paul with Burstbucker pups. I also use a fat strat equipped with a TB-11 custom custom. I run the gains on both pedal channels at about 9 o'clock and the tone at 12 o'clock, then I set the amps EQ to my liking. This pedal gets only 1 tone but what a tone it is. It's thick and has that mid quality that plexi guys are always seeking. There is quite alot of gain on tap and note seperation is always there, amazing! Throw all of your other distortion gizmos away and make room for this. It doesn't work too well with single coils in my opionion however.

Super Sweet

By DPS Recording

from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This is without a doubt, THE best distortion/overdrive pedal I have ever heard. It is punchy, articulate, dripping with character, and best of all, transparent. By transparent, I mean it acts just like my vintage Marshall (when I am able to crank it to "11") and retains all of the desirable characteristics of my guitar, especially when I roll back the volume a bit. It took a bit of tweaking to find what I liked, but I can't see myself wanting to change pedals again, ever. The bright blue LEDs and handsome case also make it visually stunning. Perhaps best of all, it comes with an integrated AC cord, no batteries or wall warts! If you desire a very heavy modern gain, this is not the pedal for you. It can get pretty crunchy if you push it, but it is too smooth for Pantera.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal does a decent job at recreating the Marshall Plexi sound, however, it requires some extreme manipulation of your amp to get it to sound decent. I ran the PT through the clean channels of my Blackstar HT60 Stage, and through a Peavey JSX. The Crunch side of the pedal was pretty good, but the high gain side delivered way too much low end and was very scooped in the mid range. I had to roll the bass and resonance almost all the way off to get a tone that was usable. The PT would benefit greatly with the addition of some EQ controls to dial it in, without having to customize the amp for it alone. I will be returning this unit as it just doesn't work for my rig.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I bought this from a good friend of mine about a week ago, and I absolutely love it. I have a Green Rhino (Way Huge) overdrive that I absolutely love, but this one has taken over for now. The biggest thing for me with this overdrive, is the boost. honestly I probably wouldn't have gone for it if it didn't have it. But its definitely an "always on" kinda thing for me. Whether I'm going for a light crunch or killer overdrive, the boost is always on (usually between 1 and 3). The other thing that's great about this pedal is that the hi gain lead channel doesn't go way overboard. I don't use it all that often cause I don't play as much heavy music anymore but it's still nice to have either way. Basically this is an amazing overdrive, especially if you enjoy spending a decent amount of time dialing in your tone like I do. If you just want a "turn it all the way up and play", this pedal is probly not for you. I would recommend something like a Tube Screamer or along those lines. But if you're a tone snob like me, I think you'll really enjoy it. The only thing that took me a while to get over is the built in power, and the only reason is because I can't just run it into my power brick, I have to have access to 3 outlets instead of 2. It's a minor inconvenience at best, that's just the only "less than positive" thing I have to say about this overdrive. There's a lot of dual overdrives out there, and they're definitely not all created equal; this one absolutely made a name for itself.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I purchased this pedal to get away from lugging my Rockitt Retro50 1987x head and 2x12 cabinet around. Although that rig sounds glorious, I've been playing the CM PlexiTone through the clean channel of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the results are far more versatile than the real deal can deliver. I can get that cranked Plexi distortion at pretty much any volume, the tone is spot on plus I have a high gain option which sounds like an OD pedal for more gain, plus a boost! The pedal is large, but actually makes more sense because you'd need three pedals to do what the PlexiTone is doing.
Only gripe is that I'd like to have a seperate trim pot for the high gain tone and priced a little lower. But the coupon from MF was just the thing that sold me. Other than that small nit picking, this pedal is a keeper

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal gives three different sounds and is a joy to use. I play variety music in the cover band scene and it is a good asset to my overall setup. I would recommend this unit to anyone who is searching for a nice sounding distortion pedal that can do multiple functions. The one thing to contend with is the response of the controls. A little "tweak" can really change the sound. I also wish the pots were a bit "tighter" as they turn a little to easily for my taste, but hey, overall, it's a great pedal! Thanks to Carl M.
