I don't often rave about gear, as I'm VERY picky. But reading all the reviews about this pedal made me very curious. I've been thinking about buying a Marshall amp recently just because I occasionally love to get a little Billy Gibbons crunch on some tunes. I already own a Carl Martin compressor/limiter, and have been VERY happy with that too, so I was very excited and curious when I received the Plexitone. I'm happy to report that it lives up to its promises. This thing really delivers. Most overdrive pedals add a lot of noise, which is highly disturbing to me. This one doesn't! I can dial in a pretty damn hardcore high-gain tone without significant humming or noise. As most other reviews have already stated, you can go from subtle overdrive to serious crunch with this, and it doesn't really color the amp sound which is essential to me. I'm playing a party gig tomorrow, and can't wait to fire this thing up. The other thing is that it sounds pretty damn good even at low volume. As far as the price tag, you get what you pay for, and this thing oozes quality and looks like it's built very well. My only minor gripe with this is that as many other Carl Martin pedals, it has a built-in power supply. If you're a touring musician traveling outside of the US, you'd have to bring a converter to use it. For this, I'm rating it 4.5 instead of 5 for features. Other than that, this is a great pedal!

I watched the YouTube demo for this pedal and fell in love. I should have done more research as I would have found that this pedal doesn't match well with many amps. In fact, the booklet that came in the box with this pedal describes this model of Plexitone in contrast with the newer version as "not as amp friendly." I ran this through a Vox AC15C1 that I love and the solos were perfect but cords were cheap, tinny and weak sounding. This really is more of a distortion pedal and less of an overdrive. Thanks to Musicians friend for giving me a hassle free return on this, your willingness to give great deals as well as quality customer service is why I come here to shop.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal does a decent job at recreating the Marshall Plexi sound, however, it requires some extreme manipulation of your amp to get it to sound decent. I ran the PT through the clean channels of my Blackstar HT60 Stage, and through a Peavey JSX. The Crunch side of the pedal was pretty good, but the high gain side delivered way too much low end and was very scooped in the mid range. I had to roll the bass and resonance almost all the way off to get a tone that was usable. The PT would benefit greatly with the addition of some EQ controls to dial it in, without having to customize the amp for it alone. I will be returning this unit as it just doesn't work for my rig.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I bought this from a good friend of mine about a week ago, and I absolutely love it. I have a Green Rhino (Way Huge) overdrive that I absolutely love, but this one has taken over for now. The biggest thing for me with this overdrive, is the boost. honestly I probably wouldn't have gone for it if it didn't have it. But its definitely an "always on" kinda thing for me. Whether I'm going for a light crunch or killer overdrive, the boost is always on (usually between 1 and 3). The other thing that's great about this pedal is that the hi gain lead channel doesn't go way overboard. I don't use it all that often cause I don't play as much heavy music anymore but it's still nice to have either way. Basically this is an amazing overdrive, especially if you enjoy spending a decent amount of time dialing in your tone like I do. If you just want a "turn it all the way up and play", this pedal is probly not for you. I would recommend something like a Tube Screamer or along those lines. But if you're a tone snob like me, I think you'll really enjoy it. The only thing that took me a while to get over is the built in power, and the only reason is because I can't just run it into my power brick, I have to have access to 3 outlets instead of 2. It's a minor inconvenience at best, that's just the only "less than positive" thing I have to say about this overdrive. There's a lot of dual overdrives out there, and they're definitely not all created equal; this one absolutely made a name for itself.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I purchased this pedal to get away from lugging my Rockitt Retro50 1987x head and 2x12 cabinet around. Although that rig sounds glorious, I've been playing the CM PlexiTone through the clean channel of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the results are far more versatile than the real deal can deliver. I can get that cranked Plexi distortion at pretty much any volume, the tone is spot on plus I have a high gain option which sounds like an OD pedal for more gain, plus a boost! The pedal is large, but actually makes more sense because you'd need three pedals to do what the PlexiTone is doing.
Only gripe is that I'd like to have a seperate trim pot for the high gain tone and priced a little lower. But the coupon from MF was just the thing that sold me. Other than that small nit picking, this pedal is a keeper

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I play the PlexiTone through my VOX AC Amp on the Clean Channel and A/B back and forth from a Marshall Sound back to my VOX AC sound. No reason to buy the Carl Marten AC-TONE if you have a VOX AC! Just get the PlexiTone and you have it all and vice versa buy less amps and less pedals! Wait a minute - Does Carl Marten make a FenderTone?

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I love my Plexitone and play through a Fender Blues Junior. My favorite settings are: setting gain 1 on about 8:00 for a great clean plexi sound, or setting gain 1 on about 8:00 and gain 2 on 10:30 for outstanding ACDC tones. You can also crank it up for more gain then most Fender amp players are ever going to need. The boost channel is also very useful for evening out levels.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Nicely made pedal. I like the three stages of crunch/high gain/boost. Problem to me is there is only one tone control. To get the pedal to sound good, the basic amp tone has to be "middy" and dull sounding with rolled off highs.

I can definitely hear the cranked plexi sound in this pedal, but I just couldn't get the highs and mids to sound right. I have a few Barber Pedals that can achieve this tone when stacked. Didn;t make sense to keep it for the what it cost. Returned it quickly.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Overall, nothing else to say but "I'm bummed it didn't work out!"
I researched this pedal and was sure it was the one for me. I loved the idea of two drives AND a boost all in one unit. When it arrived I was excited to plug it in. But once plugged into my 1976 Fender Deluxe Reverb, it sounded like a chainsaw! I could not get any decent sounds out it no matter the settings -very brittle and harsh. I will say, however, that the boost did work as advertised. I was very disappointed. The search is still on! For now, I will keep my Mosferatu and Fulltone Distortion Pro!
The build quality appears to be top notch. Very sturdy unit.
Very pricey unit, that alone convinced me to buy it thinking it was going to be a solid drive.

Replaced 3 pedals with this one

    By MongMong

    from Seattle

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I A/B'd this with a Tube Screamer TS808 reissue. The results were CLEAR, as in this thing made the TS808 sound muddy and limited (read MORE headroom). I then A/B'd it with a Mesa Bottle Rocket Tube overdrive pedal. This was closer but I decided that this thing was more lush and smooth whereas the Mesa was more gritty and teethy. The boost function allowed me to replace another pedal as well. In the end I came out with a better array sounds and it paid for itself and then some by way of replacing pedals.
